Chapter 3: Echoes of Her Mother’s Warnings

The drive to her mother’s house always felt like a step backward, stripping away the confident, untouchable “Boss” version of herself layer by layer. As Ava pulled into the driveway of the modest home she grew up in, the chipped white paint on the porch railing made her chest tighten.

Family dinner was a performance she had been rehearsing since she was ten.

“You’re late,” her mother, Elena, said the moment Ava stepped through the door. There was no hug, just a quick, critical glance at her fitted black dress the same one she had worn for Noah. “I hope you weren’t working too much again. You look tired.”

“Just a busy morning at the parlor, Mom,” Ava said, kicking off her heels as she stepped into the kitchen.

The house smelled of roast chicken and rosemary, warm and familiar. But the atmosphere felt thin, like it could crack at any moment. Elena still lived in the shadow of a marriage that had ended years ago, carrying the bitterness of a man who walked away and never looked back.

She moved around the stove, then reached out and lightly touched Ava’s cheek. A small, unexpected softness. It never lasted.

“I saw your father’s brother at the store today,” her mother said, setting down a bowl. “He asked about you. I told him you’re doing well, even if you’re still single. A woman can’t do everything alone forever. You need stability.”

Ava gripped the back of a chair.

This again.

The same conversation, every week. Her mother’s life was proof of what happened when a man refused to stay. And yet Ava was caught up in Noah Volkov a man who was doing exactly that.

Different face. Same story.

Her phone buzzed in her apron pocket.

Her heart jumped instantly, hope rising before she could stop it.

“Excuse me,” she said, stepping into the hallway.

She pulled out her phone.

Not Noah.

Tessa: Checking in. Don’t let your mom get in your head tonight. You’re a queen, remember?

Ava let her head rest against the wall, closing her eyes.

Queen.

If only it felt that simple.

Her thoughts drifted to the notebook on her nightstand, filled with pages about a woman chasing love in the wrong places. At first, it had just been a story.

Now it felt like a mirror.

Noah’s silence had always been easy to hide in. He didn’t ask questions. Didn’t expect anything from her. Didn’t make her feel like she had to prove herself.

But that same silence came with a cost.

It meant she never knew where she stood.

And maybe that was worse.

She pushed herself off the wall and walked back into the dining room, taking her seat at the table where too many conversations had turned into quiet battles.

“Is there someone new?” her mother asked suddenly, her eyes narrowing. “You have that look. The same one I had before your father left. That… waiting look.”

Ava froze, her fork hovering midair.

“There’s no one, Mom.”

“Good,” Elena said sharply, returning to her food. “Better to be alone than to be someone’s secret.”

The words landed harder than Ava expected.

She swallowed, forcing the food down even though it tasted like nothing. Her phone sat beside her, silent.

She didn’t need to check.

She already knew.

Noah wasn’t calling.

Wasn’t texting.

Wasn’t choosing her.

And yet, a part of her was still waiting.

Ava lowered her gaze to her plate, pushing the food around without taking another bite.

She hated this feeling. The quiet pull in her chest. The part of her that refused to let go, even when everything in front of her made it clear she should.

It wasn’t just Noah.

It was what he represented.

The possibility that someone could choose her without conditions. Without expectations. Without turning her into something she had to earn.

But the more she thought about it, the more that illusion cracked.

Noah didn’t choose her.

He allowed her.

And somehow, she had convinced herself that was enough.

Her grip tightened around her fork.

It wasn’t enough.

It had never been.

Across the table, her mother continued eating like nothing had happened, like her words hadn’t just settled deep under Ava’s skin.

Maybe that was the problem.

Everyone in this house learned how to move on without fixing anything.

To say something sharp… then pretend it didn’t matter.

Ava exhaled slowly, her chest rising and falling as she tried to steady herself.

She wasn’t her mother.

She wasn’t going to live the same story.

At least… that’s what she had always told herself.

One year later. Morning sunlight poured through the stained-glass windows of the small chapel overlooking Lake Maren. The air carried the scent of fresh flowers, and the gentle ringing of church bells echoed across the valley. Guests filled the pews, smiling as they waited for the ceremony to begin. The Volkovs sat beside the Hayes family. There were no divisions anymore. No secrets. No ancient rivalries. Just one family. Outside the chapel, Noah stood beneath the old oak tree where James had once taught him to skip stones. His hands were tucked into the pockets of his suit, but his heart refused to be still. Gabriel walked over and chuckled. “You’ve faced armed men, hidden conspiracies, and the collapse of an underground sanctuary.” He adjusted Noah’s tie. “But today you’re nervous.” Noah laughed. “Terrified.” Gabriel smiled. “Good.” “It means this matters.” Before Noah could answer, Alexander approached quietly. The old man held James’s pocket watch in his weathe

Three months later. Spring had painted the Volkov estate in shades of green and gold. The mansion, once guarded by armed security and hidden beneath generations of secrets, felt different now. The gates remained open. Children from the nearby village laughed as they chased one another across the gardens James had planted decades earlier. The estate no longer belonged to fear. It had become a place of life. Noah stood on the balcony overlooking the grounds, a cup of coffee warming his hands. For the first time since he could remember, there was no meeting waiting for him. No encrypted message. No hidden file. No emergency. Only peace. A pair of familiar arms slipped around his waist from behind. “You’ve been standing here for twenty minutes,” Ava murmured. “I’m thinking.” “Dangerous.” He laughed. “I’ve heard that before.” She rested her cheek against his shoulder. “What are you thinking about?” He watched the sunrise spread across the gardens. “I’m trying to get u

The bells continued to echo through the sanctuary. For the first time in centuries, they did not announce the beginning of a new Keeper. They mourned the end of one. Noah rested his hand on the Covenant Ledger one last time before gently closing it. The heavy cover settled with a quiet thud that seemed to ripple through every corridor beneath the Volkov estate. The ancient mechanisms around them began to move again. This time, the sound was different. Not awakening. Shutting down. Arthur looked around in amazement. “The sanctuary is closing itself.” Alexander nodded slowly. “It was designed to.” “When the Covenant ended, so would this place.” Daniel watched as rows of shelves slowly disappeared behind moving stone walls. “The archives…” “They’re being sealed.” “No,” Alexander corrected softly. “They’re being released.” A series of hidden compartments opened along the chamber walls. Instead of ancient journals, neatly organized crates emerged, each marked with the name

Noah stared at the birth certificate, his hands suddenly unsteady. The sanctuary fell into complete silence. Alexander slowly stepped forward, his expression unreadable. “Give it to me.” Noah handed him the document without speaking. The old man unfolded it carefully. The moment his eyes landed on the name, all the color drained from his face. “It survived…” Gabriel frowned. “What survived?” Alexander closed his eyes. “The truth.” Lydia looked from one man to another. “What truth?” Alexander folded the paper and held it tightly against his chest. “There was another child.” The words echoed through the chamber. Arthur lowered his head. “I knew.” Everyone turned toward him. “You knew?” Gabriel asked, disbelief written across his face. Arthur nodded slowly. “James made me promise that if this day ever came, I would let Alexander tell it.” Alexander let out a weary sigh. “The child wasn’t hidden because he was unwanted.” “He was hidden because someone wanted him d

The alarm continued to echo beneath the estate, each metallic chime vibrating through the ancient stone until it settled into an uneasy silence. Noah stood motionless, his eyes fixed on the lantern-lit chamber before him. Alexander Volkov was alive. His grandfather, a man whose death had become family history, was standing only a few feet away. Noah had imagined this moment a thousand different ways over the years, though he had never known it. If he ever met the man who came before James, he expected anger, questions, perhaps even resentment. Instead, all he felt was disbelief. Alexander took a slow step toward him. His age showed in the silver of his hair and the lines around his eyes, but there was strength in his posture that reminded Noah painfully of James. “You have your father’s eyes,” Alexander said softly. “And his stubbornness.” Noah gave a faint smile. “I’ve been told that a lot lately.” “I imagine you have.” Alexander looked at the pocket watch resting in Noah’s h

The hidden staircase spiraled downward into darkness. No one spoke. The only sounds were the soft hiss of the lantern below and the distant rumble of the explosions still shaking the estate overhead. Noah stood at the entrance, staring into the darkness. James had written only one sentence. Do not enter until the Keeper is ready. He looked down at the Covenant Ledger still resting in his hands. The blue glow had faded. Almost as if it had completed its purpose. Arthur stepped beside him. “Your father never showed this place to anyone.” Gabriel nodded. “Not even me.” Lydia swallowed hard. “Whatever is down there…” “…James believed only Noah should see it.” Noah slowly shook his head. “No.” He reached for Ava’s hand. “We see it.” “Together.” Ava smiled softly. “As always.” Evelyn’s eyes shimmered. “He really did become James… just in a different way.” … The staircase seemed endless. Unlike the first vault, this level wasn’t lined with concrete. The deeper the

The drive from her mother’s house was a blur of lights and rising desperation. Ava didn’t think about going home, and she didn’t call Tessa. She couldn’t take any more advice tonight. She just needed one thing. Noah. She needed him to look at her and make everything else go quiet. But the mo

Her two brothers, Leo and Marcus, were already arguing in the living room, their voices overlapping in the same chaotic rhythm they’d had since they were boys. Across the room, her younger sister, Maya, sat curled into the corner of the couch, eyes fixed on her phone, completely disconnected from e

The sharp scent of peppermint oil and expensive shampoo was supposed to be Ava’s sanctuary. Here, under the sleek lights of Ava’s Glam, she wasn’t the woman begging for a seat at someone else’s table. She was the one who built the table, owned the chairs, and ran the room. Ava stood behind her st

Ava stared at her phone, the screen casting a soft glow across her face in the dim light of her apartment. On the coffee table beside her sat a stack of payroll ledgers and design layouts for Ava’s Glam the beauty parlor she had built from the ground up. Normally, those papers were her anchor, the
