Chapter 2

Author: Eternity
"Medicine won't fix everything."

I looked at Damian. "She needs someone who cares. Someone who stays. Someone who makes her feel safe."

Clara's cheeks immediately flushed. "Elena, that's not what I meant"

Damian's expression darkened. "You've been angry ever since I left for Sicily. It was business. Did you really expect me to report every move to you?"

Two weeks ago, it had been our wedding anniversary.

I'd spent days preparing dinner myself. His favorite wine. His favorite dessert.

Even the vintage watch I'd commissioned months earlier had finally arrived.

I waited until after midnight. He never came home.

Instead, I saw Clara's Instagram updated.

She was standing beside Damian on the Blackwood estate in Sicily.

The caption read:

Safe because you're here.

When I called him, his voice remained calm.

"It was Family business. There wasn't time to explain. Our anniversary happens every year. This meeting didn't. I thought you'd understand the difference."

Then he added, "Don't make my schedule the center of your life. You should have your own."

Something inside me finally broke. "So that's how it is? No matter what happens, I'll always come last."

There was a long silence. Then Damian sighed. "We'll talk when I get back."

The line went dead.

That night, I signed the contract with a company in London. The recruiter looked at me in surprise.

"You're relocating overseas? Does your boyfriend know? That's a pretty big decision."

I signed my name. "I don't need anyone's permission."

Months earlier, I'd once asked Damian whether I should accept a position inside the Family's investment division or continue helping oversee the foundation.

He hadn't even looked up. "It's your life. You decide."

Yet he'd personally spent hours teaching Clara how to navigate the Family.

Introducing her to every captain. Every advisor. Every ally she might need.

He always said I depended on him too much.

When I wanted to tell him something exciting, he barely looked up from the reports on his desk.

When I asked him to drive me somewhere, he reminded me his schedule couldn't revolve around me.

When I wanted to accompany him to Family dinners, he told me to build a life outside of him.

I used to think that was simply who Damian Blackwood was.

Quiet. Reserved. Difficult to love.

I believed, if I stayed long enough, I'd become the exception.

Then Clara came back into my life. She was my younger half-sister.

We'd never been particularly close.

After our mother's death, she had nowhere else to go.

I was the one who asked Damian to help her.

I thought he'd refuse. Instead, he agreed without hesitation.

And before I realized it, she had become the exception I'd spent years waiting to be.

She complained about a disagreement with another woman at the Blackwood estate. He listened patiently.

She mentioned craving dessert late at night. He drove across the city to bring it to her himself.

At Family gatherings, He introduced her personally.

"This is Clara. Take good care of her."

Whenever I questioned it, Damian always frowned.

"She's just a kid. Are you really jealous of that? Don't make something out of nothing."

A kid. She was only three years younger than me.

Every excuse I'd ever made for him, he's just emotionally distant.

He's too busy. He's not good at expressing affection.

One by one, they crumbled. Because I'd finally seen the truth.

He was capable of tenderness. It simply wasn't meant for me.

Maybe that was for the best.

Tomorrow after my surgery, I'd leave New York.

Damian would never know that I'd walked away carrying his child.

My phone rang. It was Ava.

"Elena, I'm coming over tonight. I'll stay with you after the procedure. I know the doctor already said it's nothing serious. But you're pregnant. You shouldn't be going through anything alone."

My fingers tightened around my phone.

"Ava," She lowered her voice. "Have you decided when you're going to tell Damian? The anniversary dinner?"

I didn't answer. Because I didn't know anymore.

"Anyway, you'd better get the guest room ready. Your favorite babysitter is moving in."

"I asked people to clean it twice. I even bought you new—"

The room door swung open.

The words caught in my throat.

Years ago, after his dinner, Damian would've simply disappeared.Hours later, I'd finally ask,Everything okay? His answer was always the same.Yeah.Never once, did he think to tell me he'd finished or ask how my evening had been.If I asked why, he'd sigh. “Don't you have anything else to do besides waiting for my texts?”I'd long since grown out of caring whether someone replied within minutes. And yet, reading Liam's explanation made something warm settle quietly inside my chest.I typed back.No worries.Finish what you're doing first.Almost immediately, the words at the top of the screen changed into typing...A long message appeared. No one is too busy to let someone they care about know they're thinking of them.It only takes a few seconds to say, "I'll be tied up for a while."Or, "I'll call you later."The people who matter deserve that much.I hope one day, You'll let me be that person for you.I stared at the screen. Clara had been standing outside the room for who knew how long. She stepped inside with a tentative smile."No." Clara looked stunned."But you always helped me with these things."Damian's expression remained cold. "Then it's time you learned."Clara blinked. The smile slowly disappeared from her face. She glanced at me."Elena, please don't be upset with Damian because of me."I smiled politely. "You don't have to worry. We're no longer together."For the briefest moment, something flashed across Clara's face.Relief. It vanished almost instantly."I never wanted the two of you to fight because of me."Damian finally looked up from the documents in front of him."If you have questions about the seating arrangements, ask the family secretary."Clara stared at him, clearly not expecting that answer."I let you depend on me for things you should have learned to handle yourself."His voice remained calm, but there was a trace of regret beneath it."I told myself it was responsibility. I

The groom smiled at Ava. "And one more thing. I never want you to wonder whether you're bothering me. If something makes you laugh, I want to hear about it. If something scares you, I want to know that too. I don't care how small it is. I want to be the first person you think of."The room erupted into applause.Across the crowd, I saw Damian. He stood quietly near the back of the ballroom, staring at the couple. Then, almost as if he felt me looking, he turned. Our eyes met. Once, a single glance like that had been enough to make my heart race. Now, I felt nothing at all. After the ceremony, I changed out of my bridesmaid's dress before joining everyone for dinner. Some last-minute seating changes had been made. My place card had disappeared.A little flower girl took my hand. "I think you're over here."She led me to a table tucked into the corner.Mostly children, and one very confused-looking adult. He looked up. Silver-blond hair. An expensive tailored suit. I stared at the screen, already drafting a careful explanation in my head. Before I could type, another message appeared. Were you trying to tell me something?A second later, my phone buzzed again.A banking notification. A transfer had been made.My eyes widened. Five figures. I froze. Then another message came through. Not an accident.Come with me to a wedding this Saturday in New York. Some distant cousin is getting married. My family will spend the entire day asking why I'm still single.I'd rather have a fake date than answer those questions. You're single, aren't you? Consider the money hazard pay.I couldn't help laughing. Unfortunately, Ava's wedding was the same day.For the first time in our friendship, a small fortune was competing against loyalty.I stared at the amount on my screen. It could pay several months' rent. Maybe longer.I sighed. Then typed back,Thank you, Mr. Carter. But my best friend is getting married on Saturday back home. There's nowhere else I'd rather

I answered calmly."Would it have changed anything if I told you?"Silence. Damian knew exactly where those words had come from. He'd used them on me countless times. His voice softened. Almost apologetic."The day after tomorrow, some friends are getting together. They're all bringing their partners. I remember you always wanted to meet them.""No." I didn't even hesitate.Months ago, I'd wanted so badly to be part of his world.Damian always said he valued his privacy, that he needed space. Now that I was gone, he was suddenly opening the door.He paused. "You've been spending all your time with Ava. I'm your boyfriend. If you want to go shopping, watch a movie, or take a weekend trip, I'll go with you."I almost laughed. I'd spent years asking him to do those exact things with me.There was always another meeting. Another trip. Another excuse.Eventually, the restaurants closed, the shows ended.
