Chapter 3

Penulis: Eternity
The guest room I'd prepared was unrecognizable.

The new bedding had been stripped off and tossed onto the floor.

Designer luggage. Makeup. Shoes. Jewelry. Half the room was filled with Clara's belongings.

A giant teddy bear sat proudly on the bed. Like a flag claiming conquered territory.

The front door opened again. Clara's laughter floated inside.

"Thank you for taking me to that restaurant, Damian. It really did cheer me up. I almost forgot how awful today was."

Damian loosened his tie as he walked in. "Clara had another disagreement at the estate. The atmosphere wasn't good. I told her she could stay here for a few days."

I let out a quiet laugh. "Damian. I told you a week ago. Ava was moving into this room."

For the first time that evening, he hesitated.

That tiny pause told me everything. He'd forgotten.

Back then, when I'd asked him, he hadn't even looked up from the documents in front of him.

"It's your friend. You decide. You don't need my opinion on every little thing."

Now, he pressed his lips together.

"I'm sorry." Then he lifted the dessert box in his hand.

His voice softened, like he was humoring a child.

"I found a place you'd like. I'll take you this weekend."

I glanced at the logo. The restaurant I'd begged him to take me to for months.

Every time, he'd been too busy.

Tonight, he'd gone there with Clara instead.

I took the box from him, walked to the kitchen and dropped it straight into the trash.

The color drained from Damian's face. Clara hurried forward.

"Elena, it's my fault. I don't mind sharing the room with your friend."

I smiled. Then walked into the guest room, picked up her suitcase, the teddy bear, and every shopping bag she'd brought.

One by one, I carried them into the hallway.

Clara froze. Her eyes immediately reddened. "But, those are all my things. Where am I supposed to sleep tonight?"

I glanced toward the master bedroom.

"Oh. You can stay with Damian. I don't mind."

Her face turned scarlet. "Elena! If you don't want me here, just say so. You don't have to humiliate me."

She burst into tears and ran toward the front door.

This time, Damian didn't follow her.

Instead, he looked at me. His brows drawn together.

"She didn't mean to touch your things. She's been through a lot. If you didn't want her staying here, you could've told me. There was no need to embarrass her."

The smile faded from my face. "This is our home. You brought another woman here. And somehow, I'm the unreasonable one for expecting you to ask me first?"

Damian sighed. "Clara has nowhere else to go. I thought you'd have a little compassion. It's only for a few days. Something this temporary didn't seem worth discussing."

He paused before adding, "Just like your friend staying here. You didn't need my permission either."

A month ago, I would've argued. I would say I’m nothing like you. I would never bring a male friend into our home.

I would've asked why Clara's comfort always mattered more than mine.

I would've fought to make Damian understand how much he'd hurt me.

But now, I simply nodded. "You're right. No one needs permission."

If that was true, I didn't need his permission to leave New York.

Or to leave him. Or to raise our child somewhere he'd never find us.

I walked to the front door. Held it open for him.

"You should go check on Clara. I'll finish packing."

For some reason, that answer didn't satisfy him.

He strode across the room and caught my wrist. "Clara can book her own hotel."

His eyes dropped to the open suitcase beside me.

His expression finally changed. "Why are you packing? Where are you going?"

Years ago, after his dinner, Damian would've simply disappeared.Hours later, I'd finally ask,Everything okay? His answer was always the same.Yeah.Never once, did he think to tell me he'd finished or ask how my evening had been.If I asked why, he'd sigh. “Don't you have anything else to do besides waiting for my texts?”I'd long since grown out of caring whether someone replied within minutes. And yet, reading Liam's explanation made something warm settle quietly inside my chest.I typed back.No worries.Finish what you're doing first.Almost immediately, the words at the top of the screen changed into typing...A long message appeared. No one is too busy to let someone they care about know they're thinking of them.It only takes a few seconds to say, "I'll be tied up for a while."Or, "I'll call you later."The people who matter deserve that much.I hope one day, You'll let me be that person for you.I stared at the screen. But I didn’t answer. In the afternoon, I left work earl

Clara had been standing outside the room for who knew how long. She stepped inside with a tentative smile."No." Clara looked stunned."But you always helped me with these things."Damian's expression remained cold. "Then it's time you learned."Clara blinked. The smile slowly disappeared from her face. She glanced at me."Elena, please don't be upset with Damian because of me."I smiled politely. "You don't have to worry. We're no longer together."For the briefest moment, something flashed across Clara's face.Relief. It vanished almost instantly."I never wanted the two of you to fight because of me."Damian finally looked up from the documents in front of him."If you have questions about the seating arrangements, ask the family secretary."Clara stared at him, clearly not expecting that answer."I let you depend on me for things you should have learned to handle yourself."His voice remained calm, but there was a trace of regret beneath it."I told myself it was responsibility. I

The groom smiled at Ava. "And one more thing. I never want you to wonder whether you're bothering me. If something makes you laugh, I want to hear about it. If something scares you, I want to know that too. I don't care how small it is. I want to be the first person you think of."The room erupted into applause.Across the crowd, I saw Damian. He stood quietly near the back of the ballroom, staring at the couple. Then, almost as if he felt me looking, he turned. Our eyes met. Once, a single glance like that had been enough to make my heart race. Now, I felt nothing at all. After the ceremony, I changed out of my bridesmaid's dress before joining everyone for dinner. Some last-minute seating changes had been made. My place card had disappeared.A little flower girl took my hand. "I think you're over here."She led me to a table tucked into the corner.Mostly children, and one very confused-looking adult. He looked up. Silver-blond hair. An expensive tailored suit. Wire-frame glasses.H

I stared at the screen, already drafting a careful explanation in my head. Before I could type, another message appeared. Were you trying to tell me something?A second later, my phone buzzed again.A banking notification. A transfer had been made.My eyes widened. Five figures. I froze. Then another message came through. Not an accident.Come with me to a wedding this Saturday in New York. Some distant cousin is getting married. My family will spend the entire day asking why I'm still single.I'd rather have a fake date than answer those questions. You're single, aren't you? Consider the money hazard pay.I couldn't help laughing. Unfortunately, Ava's wedding was the same day.For the first time in our friendship, a small fortune was competing against loyalty.I stared at the amount on my screen. It could pay several months' rent. Maybe longer.I sighed. Then typed back,Thank you, Mr. Carter. But my best friend is getting married on Saturday back home. There's nowhere else I'd rather

I answered calmly."Would it have changed anything if I told you?"Silence. Damian knew exactly where those words had come from. He'd used them on me countless times. His voice softened. Almost apologetic."The day after tomorrow, some friends are getting together. They're all bringing their partners. I remember you always wanted to meet them.""No." I didn't even hesitate.Months ago, I'd wanted so badly to be part of his world.Damian always said he valued his privacy, that he needed space. Now that I was gone, he was suddenly opening the door.He paused. "You've been spending all your time with Ava. I'm your boyfriend. If you want to go shopping, watch a movie, or take a weekend trip, I'll go with you."I almost laughed. I'd spent years asking him to do those exact things with me.There was always another meeting. Another trip. Another excuse.Eventually, the restaurants closed, the shows ended. The places I'd wanted to visit disappeared from my list.I stopped asking. There was no

My first week in London didn't go the way I'd imagined. My onboarding paperwork had somehow disappeared. My security badge never arrived. My system access was delayed for days.By the time everything was sorted out, I'd already been assigned the department's least desirable account. An impossible deadline. An impossible target. It didn't take long before I figured out why. Officially, the team was led by the founder's son. Young. Brilliant. And rarely in the office. The day-to-day decisions were made by the regional director instead. The two of them disagreed on almost everything.Without realizing it, I'd become collateral damage.Once again, my approval request was stuck waiting on another department. No reply. No explanation. Frustrated, I opened the pinned conversation at the top of my messages. Before I could stop myself, I sent a crying cat emoji.I was about to complain to Ava. Instead, the reply came almost instantly.I'm here. What's wrong?I frowned. That wasn't how Ava usual
