Chapter 2

Penulis: Canal
Dustin's face twitched violently at that.

The incident from five years ago began playing in his head, splashing him with unpleasant memories like a cold bucket of ice water.

His mother, Nancy Reynolds, suffered from severe asthma for many years. One year, she generously sponsored a poor student, who turned out to be Miranda, and even brought her home as a guest.

However, Miranda got jealous of how good Nancy was to me and mischievously replaced all of her asthma medication by her bedside with regular vitamin tablets.

That night, Nancy had a horrible asthma attack and collapsed in the hallway. She clutched her throat in agony and cried out for help.

Meanwhile, Miranda stood just about three feet away with her phone in the air, recording Nancy's suffering while giggling behind the camera.

"Stop acting, Nancy. You were still fine a minute ago."

That was how Nancy suffocated to death in her own villa hallway.

By the time Duustin rushed to the hospital, the only things he saw were Nancy's dead body under a white cloth and the video that Miranda had posted on her social media account for laughs.

He dropped to his knees outside the morgue, his eyes bloodshot as he suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood.

He had grown up with Nancy all his life, and she was the only safe haven he could rely on in a household filled with deceit and power struggles.

He'd hugged me tightly in his arms then and cried so hard it felt as though he'd lost his very soul that day.

"I don't have a mother anymore, Claudia. You're the only one I have left."

For the next three months after that, he locked himself up in the dark basement and refused to eat or drink. I was the one who force-fed him the cooled-off stews and soups and held his emaciated form in my arms as I fought to tear him away from Death's door.

I had been the one who held his hand through the darkest time of his life.

"I never forgot," Dustin said through gritted teeth, his eyes turning red with tears. His voice was fierce and resolute. "A vile, vicious woman like her will never be able to atone for Mom's life even if she died a thousand times over.

"If it weren't for you, darling, I would have already been dead. Miranda is worth less to me than an animal."

His eyes were still red, and the veins on the back of his hands popped out. Yet, his inner thoughts struck me like a sledgehammer, shattering all the sacrifices I'd made for him during that period.

[That incident happened such a long time ago. Miranda was only 18 years old at that time and hadn't known any better! How could she have known that those were Mom's life-saving pills that she swapped out?

[She felt so guilty afterward that she even tried slitting her wrists twice. Her hands are riddled with scars now. How could Claudia be so petty and vicious by bringing up the past against her like that?

[Miranda's such a kind and pure soul too, and she can't even bring herself to crush an ant. She's also been crying and waking from nightmares lately, and I'm so heartbroken for her.

[What's done is done. The dead can never come back to life. What's the point of bringing up the past when we should be looking to the future instead?]

I dug my nails into the palms of my hands until deep crescent marks formed.

How hilarious.

He was playing the role of an unforgiving and devoted son on the surface, but deep down, he felt only heartache for the scars on the murderer's arms.

The three months I'd spent with him in his darkest time didn't even mean as much to him as Miranda's fake tears after all.

He thought that I was still grieving Nancy's death and tried to reach out to comfort me, but I ducked and avoided his touch.

Instead, I glared intensely at his fourth finger and felt the tears instantly welling in my eyes.

The ring on his finger was not our wedding or engagement ring.

Our ring was a plain band that he had designed himself, and the inside of the ring was engraved with the initials of our names. He told me before that the purest of love didn't need any other fancy embellishments.

However, the ring that he was now wearing on his finger had a pink jewel set in it. It was a woman's wedding band. Also, it obviously didn't fit him, so it was stuck halfway through his second finger joint and left a deep, glaring red mark in his skin.

My tone didn't change. Instead, I just stared at Dustin coldly like I was looking at a rotten corpse."So, you think that you have the right to take off your clothes in this life and sleep with another woman just because you took off your clothes for me in your past life?"Dustin's breath caught in his throat again when he heard what I said. He froze to the spot as though he'd just been struck by lightning. Even his eyes trembled in their sockets. The bonds he thought would transcend life and death were shattered to pieces with my words, making them out to be nothing more than a joke.He gulped hard, unable to find a word to say.[She doesn't believe me… She thinks it's just a joke… Did she really think that I was only using the love I risked my life for as a bargaining chip to defend my infidelity?]"I was very grateful to you when you died in the blizzard for me, Dustin Sherwood," I said, looking into his eyes and speaking in a calm voice to deliver the final blow."But now, y

I looked down at my clean fingertips and said, "Dustin, did you really think that I should be eternally grateful to you now just because you punished Miranda?"Did you think that I should also forget about the six-week pregnancy report just because your ribs were cracked?"Dustin's breath caught in his throat. "It was an accident…" he defended himself instinctively, but his voice was so small I could barely hear him."I was really drunk then. She was the one who seduced me first. I don't have any feelings for her. You're the only one I love!"[Why won't you believe me? Mimi is just a body without a soul! You're the only one I want to marry! Why must you hold that single mistake I made against me like this?]"Are you done?" I cut in, interrupting his disgusting self-defence monologue. The chestnuts in my hand had already cooled down by now."If you're done, then kindly leave. You're blocking my light."Those words hit Dustin's last shred of dignity like a thunderclap. His legs

Dustin's usually impeccable black coat now hung on his thin shoulders like tattered rags. The hem was also splattered with mud. It made him look as though he'd been through the mangler in a cesspool for days.He glared intently at Xavier's hand holding mine as his chest heaved violently. This was the first time I'd seen him in three months after the scandal broke. I heard that it had been pouring in Pine City the day he was kicked out of his family manor onto the streets. He was a glaring contrast to his usual pampered self, always surrounded by bodyguards."Let go of her right now!" he hollered hoarsely from his parched throat. He was so jealous that the muscles on his face spasmed and the veins popped from his forehead. He still wouldn't tear his eyes off Xavier's hand, a terrifying ferocity surging in them. However, Xavier didn't let go. He didn't even look the least bit alarmed or bothered by Dustin's appearance. Instead, he gently tugged me behind him and shielded me from Dus

Pine City's sensational wedding of the century ended up turning into a complete scandal. Just three days later, the stock price of Sherwood Capital plummeted to an all-time low.The 4K footage captured on my pinhole camera and the glaring pregnancy test report were posted verbatim on major financial forums and social media platforms. The video showed Miranda passing Dustin a note in the wedding hall, the relatives entering the penthouse suite to see clothes scattered all over the floor, and Dustin frantically blocking the wardrobe door in a desperate, disheveled state.Every detail captured in the video was like a scalpel peeling off every layer of Dustin's glamorous facade as the most coveted and respected "bachelor" of Pine City.Four days after the scandal broke, Marco gave out his orders.Dustin was stripped of all his duties and position at Sherwood Capital. His family trust funds were frozen, and he also got his ribs cracked after a massive beating from Marco. Ultimately,

"Dustin Sherwood! That woman is the murderer who killed your mother!" Marco roared, slamming his cane into the back of Dustin's knees."How could you have done such a thing like this? How could you let your mother down in heaven? Do you even have a conscience?"Dustin hissed in pain and fell heavily to his knees on the carpet.Aunt Kelsey's legs gave way, and she collapsed to the ground, clutching her chest and gasping for breath. Tears streamed down her face. Meanwhile, Mom rushed up to Dustin and grabbed him by his collar, waving her fist in the air. However, she trembled so hard that she couldn't even hit him with it."You animal!" Mom gritted through her teeth, her eyes bloodshot. "I treated you like my own son, and this is how you repaid my daughter? By cheating on her?""No! It's not what you think it is!" Dustin exclaimed. "It was Miranda! She was the one who tricked me and seduced me!"He crawled over to me on his knees, trying to grab hold of the hem of my dress."I j

I had barely opened the door by a crack when Dustin's tall frame suddenly appeared behind the door, blocking us from peering in.His shirt was only hastily buttoned at the very bottom, and the rest of his muscular chest was exposed to the cold air wafting in through the door. His breathing was still uneven. His chest was heaving, and there was also a fine layer of sweat clinging to his forehead."Claudia?"He gulped hard as he struggled to contain the fear in his eyes, swapping them for a warm yet helpless smile. "What are you doing up here with Mom and Dad and the others? I'm not done changing yet. It's still messy inside."I glared at the fresh scratches on his collarbone that were obviously done by manicured nails. They were still red and slightly swollen from the skin breaking.Dustin's inner thoughts then blasted in my head like a hurricane warning.[Damn, we nearly got found out. Thank god I heard their footsteps and stopped just in time. Miranda's still hiding in the ward
