Chapter 1

Autor: Fruity Heaven
I was detained in the county jail for three days, and once I was released, I got my phone back and switched it on. There wasn't a single message or missed call from Cassian Allen, my husband. He hadn't tried to contact me at all.

There was a message from the delivery guy, though. He had sent me a message on Thanksgiving night because he couldn't reach me to drop off the artisanal Thanksgiving mini pie set I had reserved a month in advance.

I dragged myself home, feeling completely exhausted. I noticed that no one was home. I spotted the open box of artisanal Thanksgiving mini pies on the coffee table, a sign that Cassian had been home.

He had even brought Nadine Fisher, his childhood sweetheart, with him. Her personal plate and fork were left on the coffee table, along with a partially eaten black truffle pie on the plate.

They must have enjoyed the meal I'd spent all afternoon preparing and admired the home I'd painstakingly decorated for Thanksgiving. They probably walked toward the window after that, taking in the nightscape outside while eating the artisanal Thanksgiving mini pie set I had ordered ahead of time.

What was I even doing when Cassian and Nadine were having their Thanksgiving feast? I seemed to be sitting in a dim, cold holding cell, facing the wall and cursing Cassian out. Or perhaps I was curled up on the narrow bed, crying uncontrollably.

I had no way of checking the time, so everything felt agonizingly slow—even letting out my grief came with a lag.

Just then, a sound came from the doorway. Cassian walked in carrying a few bags. He changed out of his shoes at the entryway and asked, "Where have you been in the past few days, Maeve?"

Cassian put on quite a convincing act, as if he had truly suffered an amnesiac episode a few days earlier.

I didn't expose his act, asking him instead, "Why didn't you call to check on me, then?"

Cassian walked over, put the bags on the coffee table, and sat beside me. "I just wanted to give you some space. I mean, we're married, but that doesn't mean we have to be joined at the hip. We don't need to be around each other every day, nor do we need to check in with each other about everything."

I knew exactly what he was getting at. I said, my smile faint, "I guess having our own space is pretty good, too."

Cassian looked taken aback, as if he hadn't expected me to say that; after all, I usually spent most of my time with him or messaged him to stay in touch when we weren't together.

I wanted to spend all my time with him when we first got married because I loved him and was attached to him.

Yet, after Cassian started suffering from intermittent amnesia, I had more to worry about than just staying close to him. I was afraid he'd forget how to get home, forget me altogether, or get pushed around when he was out with no one to back him up.

Cassian, however, always treated my concern and constant need to stay in contact as some sort of burden.

I asked, "You had Nadine over for Thanksgiving, right? How was it, Cassian?"

Cassian was staring down at his phone, completely tuning me out. He finally looked up once I repeated myself, looking dazed. "What did you just ask, Maeve?"

I gestured toward the pink plate on the coffee table with my chin. "It's such a shame. There were 12 mini pies in the box, and every single one was tossed aside after just a few bites."

There were partially eaten mini pies scattered inside the box—some had barely been touched, their filling smeared across the inside of the lid.

I had waited a month for these mini pies, only for Nadine to wreck them all in one night.

"You shouldn't have bought so many weird flavors in the first place," Cassian said, then looked back at his phone screen, tapping away as he messaged someone. "Nadine didn't know which ones she liked, so she tasted a bit of each."

I stated flatly, "I bought those for myself. I had been waiting for them for a whole month."

Cassian frowned slightly and glanced at me. "You're not seriously mad, are you? It's just a box of mini pies; they aren't worth much. If you want them so badly, I'll just buy you new ones."

It was true that they weren't that expensive, but Cassian seemed to have forgotten that these were the mini pies we shared up on the roof on Thanksgiving during our first year of marriage.

That bakery had been closed for six whole years after that. I put so much effort into getting a pre-order when they reopened this year, thinking it would be a meaningful surprise for Cassian. It turned out he didn't care at all.

"I can't talk right now. I have something to take care of," Cassian said as he rose to his feet and briefly turned his screen toward me. It was his chat history with Nadine, a wall of messages filling the screen. He only ever showed that kind of enthusiasm with her. "I bought these plushies for Nadine. I have to take them to her."

He picked up the large bags from the coffee table. He took a few steps before turning back and pulling a rabbit plushie out of the bag. "Here you go. That should make up for the mini pies."

Cassian hurried out the door after that.

I held my breath while stuffing the plushie into a plastic bag, tied it tight, and threw it out the front door. I had to swallow two allergy pills just to ease the irritation on my skin. How could someone who had once taken such good care of me have forgotten that I was allergic to that fur and plushies?

I could only come to one conclusion—Cassian had fallen out of love with me a long time ago.

I had no idea how Cassian had found my place, but he had begun appearing in my life regularly.I would find a fresh bouquet at the door every time I pushed open the front gate; one day it'd be roses, the next day dew-kissed lisianthus. They were wrapped with care, with no signature or note included, just bound by a black ribbon. That was a habit Cassian had kept since we started dating. I didn't even look at them before dumping them right into the trash.Cassian appeared on the street outside my house every night. He knew I couldn't stand him, so he kept his distance, sitting in a café and watching me from afar. He never left, no matter the weather. It actually rained one day. I forgot my umbrella and took shelter outside a convenience store. He braved the rain to buy an umbrella, ran over to set it down beside me, and then walked off into the downpour without a word.I couldn't understand why Cassian was doing all this. Did he just put on another performance, continuing to act l

Cassian had changed so much in the three years since we'd last met. He had once been refined and sharp, but now he looked utterly disheveled. His hair fell messily over his forehead, faint dark circles showed beneath his eyes, and his gaze held a deep, lingering exhaustion. He was sitting right in the middle of a pile of empty bottles, staring at me without blinking.I never thought our reunion would look like this.Cassian instinctively recoiled, trying to hide his sorry state, but there was nowhere to go in the open space around him. He slowly stood up and stammered, "M-Maeve?"He walked unsteadily, probably from drinking too much, his body swaying a little. "I-Is it really you, Maeve?"He looked on with delight the moment he realized that I wasn't a figment of his imagination. He stumbled toward me, trying to run, but fell into the sand with a thud. His clothes were wet from the seawater, and he looked more wretched than ever. He pushed himself up again. "P-Please don't go, M-M

I decided to make Halport my home. I began looking for houses the moment the idea took root, eventually buying a cottage with a garden near the beach on the edge of town. I never feared Cassian coming after me.I knew that our hearts were already miles apart, and being near each other physically wouldn't change that or take us back to how we were.I kept my phone number and couldn't be bothered to block Cassian. I was right here. If he wanted to look for me, he could do so at any time. Those in love would find their way back to each other even from opposite ends of the earth, but those who didn't love each other would keep missing each other, even in a place as small as Halport. Thus, spring passed into autumn, winter gave way to summer, and the tulips in my garden bloomed over and over again.I gradually stepped out from under the shadow of my marriage over the years, and my memories of Cassian gradually faded away.Cassian had been looking for me the whole time. Yvonne told me

Over the phone, Cassian asked, "Where are you?"I went silent for a beat, then asked, "How did you manage to get my new number, Cassian?"Cassian chuckled before saying, "I can track it down as long as I set my mind to it."I was momentarily stunned.Cassian took a deep breath and continued, "Have you had enough? Your whole 'running away from home' game is seriously getting old now."He spoke with that same patronizing attitude. "I'll tell you right now—this trick doesn't work on me. You can't even find your way around. Where could you possibly go by yourself? It's a miracle you haven't gotten yourself into trouble. Where are you right now, Maeve?"I hated the way he talked down to me. I said coldly, "It's none of your business."Cassian cut me off. "How is it none of my business? You're my wife! I have every right to know where you are, Maeve!""I'm in Halport," I said. Cassian would never actually come out here to find me even if he knew. He was just waiting for me to go ba

I was squatting in the yard, scattering flower seeds, when my phone lit up beside me. It was a group of messages from Yvonne."Where on earth are you? Cassian and Nadine are acting even more shamelessly now that you're not around."I saw Cassian heading to a hotel with Nadine last night."It seems like they're planning to go on a trip to the beach."You should hurry up and deal with this, Maeve. Otherwise, they're actually going to end up in bed together!"Everyone knew there was something between Cassian and Nadine, even if no one said it outright. They had grown up together in the same neighborhood, shared meals from the same bowl, and even slept in the same bed as children. Their friends had all expected Cassian to marry Nadine. No one had expected him to marry me and bring me into the Allen family—and no one was willing to accept it, either. These past few years, except for Yvonne, everyone had believed Cassian should love Nadine more than me, the woman who had appeared out

  • He Only Remembered Me When I Was Gone   Chapter 5

I leaned against the window and watched the city beneath me shrink as the plane rose above the clouds. It then shrank into a barely visible speck of light and completely disappeared from view.I couldn't stop my thoughts from wandering to those seven years of marriage—more than 2,000 days and nights. I had lived with the lie Cassian had made up, choosing to trust him time and time again, only to be hurt again and again.I used to convince myself that he couldn't help it because he was sick. He had memory loss, so it wasn't a matter of him not loving me—he simply couldn't hold onto me. That was why I tolerated his coldness time and again. I repeatedly walked him through directions, taught him my name, and went over our history. I stuck notes all over the house and tried every method I could think of to help his memory, doing everything I could to be the one constant in his confused world.I had clearly thought too highly of my standing with Cassian. It turned out I was never ahead
