Chapter 2

Author: Fruity Heaven
It was getting late, but Cassian still hadn't come home. I instinctively pulled out my phone to call him. It wasn't until I heard the cold, automated voice that I came to my senses. He'd blocked me again. He'd always blocked me whenever he pretended to have amnesia.

Left with no options, I ended up begging his friends and business associates to help me get in touch with him. I'd humbled myself and pleaded with them too many times, so much so that everyone in his social circle instantly saw me as a laughingstock.

Cassian's friends would even help him deceive me. They'd tell me that he was in the south when he was out with Nadine in the north of the city.

I'd rush all the way there, only to find that he'd never been there, while he was already back home, comfortably sipping his coffee. He could always come up with a reasonable explanation—he'd lost his memory, he'd forgotten, and he'd only just remembered.

I had been such a fool, completely taken in by him.

I went ahead and blocked Cassian too. Nadine's latest social media post showed him watching an opera with her. If we were each going to do our own thing, then so would I. I contacted a few friends and went to a bar with them.

It wasn't until the middle of the night that I received a call from an unknown number. "Where the hell are you? Why did you block me? What the hell are you trying to do, Maeve?"

He bombarded me with questions, one coming right after another. He had never taken the initiative to contact me for the very first time.

I said flatly, "I'm hanging out at a bar right now. Is there something you need?"

Cassian asked, "Which bar?"

He showed up in less than 30 minutes after I gave him the address. He grabbed the drink out of my hand, hauled me up by the waist, and carried me out to his car. He opened the door, tossed me onto the seat, and slammed it shut.

I was so dizzy in the passenger seat that I grabbed at whatever was near me, accidentally ripping down the whole cluster of decorative flowers off the dashboard.

Cassian got even angrier when he saw the flowers. "Why did you rip off Nadine's flowers? She's going to make a fuss when she sees them."

I wanted to toss the flowers into the back seat, but when I turned to look, I found that it was already packed with Nadine's belongings.

Cassian roughly pulled me back and said, "You don't usually drink. What the hell is wrong with you today?"

I said indifferently, "You don't usually bother contacting me, either. What is wrong with you today, Cassian?"

Cassian choked back a response, turned his face away, and went silent for the rest of the drive.

There was a faint citrus scent in the car, which belonged to Nadine. Cassian had never used car fragrances, so I couldn't help wondering how many times she'd sat in his car for the smell to linger in the car like that.

I opened the glove compartment to look for something to sober me up, only to find a bunch of Nadine's things packed inside.

I noticed that there were hair clips, hair ties, and even a pair of her worn socks sitting right next to Cassian's electric razor. His usual germaphobia seemed to magically disappear whenever it came to her.

"I was the one who bought you this car, wasn't I?" I asked as I glanced around the interior, which had changed completely since back then. "How did it end up becoming Nadine's car?"

Cassian opened all the car windows and allowed the night wind to blow straight in, making my head throb. He then said sternly, "You'd better sober up and stop throwing these tantrums, Maeve."

I rolled the passenger-side window back up myself and looked toward Cassian. I suddenly realized he wasn't quite the same as he used to be—from the way his brows were now constantly furrowed instead of relaxed to how his tone had shifted from gentle to perpetually impatient.

"Nadine doesn't know how to drive, so I pick her up and drop her off on my way to work. What's wrong with that? You're at home all day and don't need the car anyway. What's the harm in letting her use it?" Cassian asked, his voice fading into the wind.

I caught only fragments of what he said, but they still hurt. I suddenly wanted to cry so badly. I closed my eyes and leaned against the window, letting the wind hit me from every side.

I still couldn't stop my eyes from welling up with tears while my heart beat rapidly in my chest. It seemed like my heart had been the same when I had decided to marry Cassian, and it was still the same now that I had decided to leave him. But none of this mattered anymore as he continued to berate me.

I took a deep breath just as the wind blew my tears away and said, "Let's get a divorce, Cassian."

I had no idea how Cassian had found my place, but he had begun appearing in my life regularly.I would find a fresh bouquet at the door every time I pushed open the front gate; one day it'd be roses, the next day dew-kissed lisianthus. They were wrapped with care, with no signature or note included, just bound by a black ribbon. That was a habit Cassian had kept since we started dating. I didn't even look at them before dumping them right into the trash.Cassian appeared on the street outside my house every night. He knew I couldn't stand him, so he kept his distance, sitting in a café and watching me from afar. He never left, no matter the weather. It actually rained one day. I forgot my umbrella and took shelter outside a convenience store. He braved the rain to buy an umbrella, ran over to set it down beside me, and then walked off into the downpour without a word.I couldn't understand why Cassian was doing all this. Did he just put on another performance, continuing to act l

Cassian had changed so much in the three years since we'd last met. He had once been refined and sharp, but now he looked utterly disheveled. His hair fell messily over his forehead, faint dark circles showed beneath his eyes, and his gaze held a deep, lingering exhaustion. He was sitting right in the middle of a pile of empty bottles, staring at me without blinking.I never thought our reunion would look like this.Cassian instinctively recoiled, trying to hide his sorry state, but there was nowhere to go in the open space around him. He slowly stood up and stammered, "M-Maeve?"He walked unsteadily, probably from drinking too much, his body swaying a little. "I-Is it really you, Maeve?"He looked on with delight the moment he realized that I wasn't a figment of his imagination. He stumbled toward me, trying to run, but fell into the sand with a thud. His clothes were wet from the seawater, and he looked more wretched than ever. He pushed himself up again. "P-Please don't go, M-M

I decided to make Halport my home. I began looking for houses the moment the idea took root, eventually buying a cottage with a garden near the beach on the edge of town. I never feared Cassian coming after me.I knew that our hearts were already miles apart, and being near each other physically wouldn't change that or take us back to how we were.I kept my phone number and couldn't be bothered to block Cassian. I was right here. If he wanted to look for me, he could do so at any time. Those in love would find their way back to each other even from opposite ends of the earth, but those who didn't love each other would keep missing each other, even in a place as small as Halport. Thus, spring passed into autumn, winter gave way to summer, and the tulips in my garden bloomed over and over again.I gradually stepped out from under the shadow of my marriage over the years, and my memories of Cassian gradually faded away.Cassian had been looking for me the whole time. Yvonne told me

Over the phone, Cassian asked, "Where are you?"I went silent for a beat, then asked, "How did you manage to get my new number, Cassian?"Cassian chuckled before saying, "I can track it down as long as I set my mind to it."I was momentarily stunned.Cassian took a deep breath and continued, "Have you had enough? Your whole 'running away from home' game is seriously getting old now."He spoke with that same patronizing attitude. "I'll tell you right now—this trick doesn't work on me. You can't even find your way around. Where could you possibly go by yourself? It's a miracle you haven't gotten yourself into trouble. Where are you right now, Maeve?"I hated the way he talked down to me. I said coldly, "It's none of your business."Cassian cut me off. "How is it none of my business? You're my wife! I have every right to know where you are, Maeve!""I'm in Halport," I said. Cassian would never actually come out here to find me even if he knew. He was just waiting for me to go ba

I was squatting in the yard, scattering flower seeds, when my phone lit up beside me. It was a group of messages from Yvonne."Where on earth are you? Cassian and Nadine are acting even more shamelessly now that you're not around."I saw Cassian heading to a hotel with Nadine last night."It seems like they're planning to go on a trip to the beach."You should hurry up and deal with this, Maeve. Otherwise, they're actually going to end up in bed together!"Everyone knew there was something between Cassian and Nadine, even if no one said it outright. They had grown up together in the same neighborhood, shared meals from the same bowl, and even slept in the same bed as children. Their friends had all expected Cassian to marry Nadine. No one had expected him to marry me and bring me into the Allen family—and no one was willing to accept it, either. These past few years, except for Yvonne, everyone had believed Cassian should love Nadine more than me, the woman who had appeared out

  • He Only Remembered Me When I Was Gone   Chapter 5

I leaned against the window and watched the city beneath me shrink as the plane rose above the clouds. It then shrank into a barely visible speck of light and completely disappeared from view.I couldn't stop my thoughts from wandering to those seven years of marriage—more than 2,000 days and nights. I had lived with the lie Cassian had made up, choosing to trust him time and time again, only to be hurt again and again.I used to convince myself that he couldn't help it because he was sick. He had memory loss, so it wasn't a matter of him not loving me—he simply couldn't hold onto me. That was why I tolerated his coldness time and again. I repeatedly walked him through directions, taught him my name, and went over our history. I stuck notes all over the house and tried every method I could think of to help his memory, doing everything I could to be the one constant in his confused world.I had clearly thought too highly of my standing with Cassian. It turned out I was never ahead
