Chapter 1

I pressed a hand to my bleeding forehead. Blood seeped between my fingers and dripped onto the greasy floor.

Through the blur, I saw Jax tenderly putting a Band-Aid over a tiny scratch on the back of Camilla’s hand.

“Camilla, don’t be scared. It’s okay now.”

Camilla clung to his sleeve, her eyes red, looking as if she’d been terribly wronged.

When the thug charged in and swung that bottle at Jax, I threw myself in front of him without thinking. I took the blow that could have killed him.

But he didn’t even turn around.

All he had eyes for was a frightened Camilla.

I didn’t say a word. I quietly turned and dragged myself out of the restaurant.

I thought back to when he’d always put me first, when I was his whole world.

When I ran a high fever, he was more worried than I was. He stayed up with me all night and didn’t even care about missing his class reunion.

He’d sworn he would only ever love me and would never let me down.

But now my head had been split open, and he acted like he didn’t even see it. He only cared about another woman.

Late at night, the clinic on the corner glowed with harsh white light.

The doctor on duty cleaned the gash on my forehead with alcohol. It was so deep you could see bone. I couldn’t afford anesthetic, so I just had to tough it out.

When the needle went through my skin, I broke out in a cold sweat from the pain. I bit down hard on my lip to keep from crying out.

“This is a deep cut, and you might have a concussion,” the doctor said with a frown. “Call someone in your family to come stay with you.”

I didn’t answer. I just numbly took out my phone.

The screen lit up, showing three years’ worth of transfer records.

To help Jax pay off the loan-shark debt his father left behind, I’d worked nonstop, every single day.

I’d worked myself sick more times than I could count, even suffering stomach bleeding from the strain.

Every cent of that hard-earned money had gone into his account, one transfer after another.

I stared at the long columns of numbers. I’d run out of tears a long time ago.

In that moment, something in me died.

I dragged myself back to our rental.

The second I opened the door, a sickly sweet smell hit me.

Jax was wearing an apron. He came over carrying a mug of hot chocolate.

He set the mug down and gently brushed the blood-crusted strands of hair away from my forehead, his eyes full of tenderness.

“Daisy, I’m sorry. Things were just so crazy back there.

“Camilla’s raising a kid on her own. She gets scared easily. You’ve always been strong and understanding. You get it, right?”

He cupped my face, his voice tender and apologetic. “Drink it while it’s hot.”

He had a way of doing the cruelest things while looking at me with nothing but love.

Even the slightest scare for Camilla would always matter more to him than my life.

I looked at that steaming mug, raised my hand, and shoved it away.

The ceramic mug scraped harshly across the table.

“Jax, let’s break up.”

Jax froze for a second.

He gave a helpless little chuckle and ruffled my hair as if I were a sulking kitten.

“All this over a bowl of spaghetti? Come on, sweetheart. Don’t be like that.

“A pipe burst at Camilla’s place, and there’s water everywhere. I need to go fix it.”

He turned, grabbed his toolbox, and stopped at the door to look back.

“Wait for me to come home.”

He didn’t believe for a second that I’d actually leave.

To him, I was a dog that couldn’t live without him. All he had to do was call, and I’d come running, tail wagging, ready to work myself to the bone for him again.

The door shut, and the room went dead silent.

I didn’t cry or throw a fit. I turned and dragged the beat-up suitcase out from under the bed.

I only took what was mine.

I opened the desk drawer to grab the manila envelope, then stopped short.

The envelope was flat.

There should have been $3,000 inside. I’d spent six months saving it, living on cold bread every day, so I could pay Mike Morgan’s tuition the next day. We had no one but each other.

It was gone.

In its place was a flimsy sheet of white paper.

Scrawled across it in cheap lipstick was a note: “Borrowed $3,000 from Daisy Morgan for an emergency. Thanks! —Camilla”

No mention of interest. No repayment date.

That was the money I’d saved for my younger brother Mike’s tuition.

I would finally close the books on that ugly debt and all the blood and tears it had cost us.I was going to leave the past behind with my head held high.Once everything was done and I’d signed my name, I took a deep breath.Mike and I walked out of the building side by side. The sun was so bright it stung my eyes a little. As we walked down the steps, I spotted a man begging on the corner, lying on a battered skateboard. He was dressed in rags. His hands were covered in raw, purplish sores from the cold. When he looked up, his cloudy, bloodshot eyes met mine.I recognized Jax right away. The instant he recognized me, his eyes wen

When Jax woke to the smell of hospital disinfectant, he received news that felt worse than a death sentence. The doctor stood beside his bed, holding his scans. His voice was cold and matter-of-fact. “You’ve suffered severe spinal cord damage. The paralysis from your waist down is permanent. You’ll need a wheelchair for the rest of your life.”Jax frantically pounded his legs with his fists, but he couldn’t feel a thing. It was as if they no longer belonged to him.He dug out his phone and tried to borrow money from the friends who’d once claimed he was like family. But every single call ended the same way. They turned him down and blocked his number. All those friendships he’d bought with my hard-earned money vanished the moment he hit rock bottom.Jax couldn’t pay his hospital bill, so they kicked him out.He couldn’t afford a decent wheelchair, so he bought a beat-up skateboard for a few dozen bucks. He pushed himself along with his hands, inching his way back to that leaky, run-dow

It rained all day, and Jax stayed on his knees outside the entire time. The restaurant door stayed shut. After nightfall, the shutter finally screeched and slowly rolled up in the wind and rain.I stood on the step under a black umbrella.Jax was soaked through, his lips blue with cold. When he saw me, he looked up, full of hope.He forced a weak, eager smile at me, rain and blood streaking his face.“Daisy, I knew it. You still have feelings for me!”I let out a humorless laugh and shook my head at him.“Jax, do you think this proves how devoted you are?“You find this touching. I find it disgusting. Save the martyr act. It doesn’t work on me.”The smile froze on his face. Refusing to give up, he crawled two paces closer and reached for my ankle.I kicked his hand away without mercy.“You don’t actually love anyone.”I didn’t raise my voice, but every word carried clearly through the rain.“You only helped Camilla because you liked having her depend on you. It fed your savior complex.

With my broom in her face, Camilla shook all over.Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted Jax frozen nearby. Like she’d found a lifeline, she scrambled over to him.“Jax! Look at her! She hit me, and now she’s trying to kill me! Hurry up and teach her a lesson!”She clung to Jax’s pant leg, hoping he’d shield her with his broad frame and call me heartless, just as he’d done countless times before. But this time, Jax kicked her away as if she were something filthy. He didn’t even glance at Camilla on the ground. He kept his eyes glued to me, desperate to please.“Daisy, I’m sorry. I really didn’t know she’d come looking for you.”He came closer like a fawning lapdog. “You had every right to hit her. If you’re still angry, take it out on me. Do whatever you want, as long as you take me back.”“Get lost. Keep your filth off my doorstep.”I spat the words out coldly, turned, walked back into my shop, and yanked down the rolling shutter.Early the next morning, people crowded around the

Jax stood in the light of the setting sun, trembling all over with excitement. He shuffled up to the door, his eyes red, and reached out to grab the hem of my shirt.“Daisy...”His voice broke, choked with tears.“I finally found you. Do you have any idea what these three years have been like for me?“I dream about you every night. I know I was wrong. I really do.”He was trying to bring back the love and pity I’d once felt for him with his haggard appearance and tender gaze.In the past, all he had to do was look hurt like that, and I’d forgive him in a heartbeat, even if it meant hurting myself.I stopped what I was doing and slowly turned around.I looked at the man I’d once loved with everything I had, the man I’d have given my life for.I felt no hate, no resentment. Just the indifference you’d feel toward a stranger.I brushed his hand away, grabbed a napkin, and wiped the spot he’d touched.“Sir, you’ve got the wrong person.” My voice was flat. “If you’re here to eat, the line’s

Once Jax had Camilla settled at the hospital, he rushed back to the abandoned warehouse by the river. But it was too late. The firefighters had put out the blaze, and nothing was left of the warehouse but a charred frame. The acrid stench of smoke hung in the air as a bitter wind blew off the river. His eyes red, Jax tried to charge into the still-smoking ruins.“There’s still someone in there! My girlfriend’s still in there!”Several firefighters held him back, shouting at him to stop.“The fire was too big, and there was gasoline in there feeding it. There’s no sign anyone survived.“We’re sorry for your loss.”Jax broke free of the firefighters, and his legs gave out. He dropped to his knees in the mud and black ash.Jax ignored the heat still rising off the ground and dug through the ashes with his bare hands like a madman. His nails broke and his fingers bled, but he didn’t seem to feel any pain. Finally, at the edge of the rubble near the window, his hand closed on a familiar pie
