Chapter 3

Autor: Audrey
With money I’d practically bled for, I paid Mike’s tuition just before the deadline.

Early one morning that weekend, Mike rode the bus for two hours to come see me.

Mike’s eyes reddened the moment he saw my paper-white face and the bandage on my forehead.

“How did you get so thin?”

He took my hand, clearly worried, and insisted on taking me out for a good meal.

I couldn’t talk him out of it, so I threw on my coat.

But just as we reached the dark mouth of the alley by my place, disaster struck without warning.

A few heavily tattooed thugs blocked our way.

They’d come to collect the overdue payment.

Their leader, Rocco Hayes, spat on the ground and fixed me with a vicious glare.

“Daisy, where’s that piece of garbage Jax? This month’s interest is three days late!”

Jax had taken the money for the interest payment and used it to pay Camilla’s rent.

“I don’t know where he is.” I kept Mike behind me, shielding him.

Rocco flew into a rage, grabbed me by the hair, and slammed me to the ground.

“You don’t know? That son of a bitch has the nerve to spend my money on some woman!”

They couldn’t find Jax, so they took it all out on me.

“Hey! Don’t you touch my sister!”

His eyes blazing, Mike lunged at them, trying to shove them away.

Rocco sneered and kicked Mike so hard he flew into the wall.

He grabbed a thick, rusty steel pipe and brought it down on Mike’s right leg without mercy.

I heard the sickening crack of bone, followed by Mike’s agonized scream.

In that moment, my whole world fell apart.

I scrambled over and held on tight to Mike, who’d passed out from the pain.

My hands were covered in warm blood.

The thugs cursed as they left, warning that next time, they’d break Jax’s hands.

My hands trembling, I pulled out my phone and frantically called Jax.

The first time, no one answered.

The second call was declined.

It wasn’t until the third try that he picked up.

On the other end, I could hear cheerful amusement park music and screams from a roller coaster.

Jax’s voice was sickeningly sweet, though I could hear the impatience underneath. “Babe, come on. Camilla’s kid has a cold and feels miserable, so I took them out to cheer them up.”

“Jax! The loan sharks sent their thugs after us! They broke Mike’s leg! Where the hell are you?” I screamed, my voice cracking.

Jax was quiet for a second, but his voice was still light and breezy.

“Stop blowing things out of proportion. Legs don’t break that easily.

“I’ll pick up some chicken later and make him some soup. Be good, babe. I’ve got to go.”

He hung up without a second thought. The line went dead.

I knelt in the pouring rain, holding Mike in despair.

The rain washed the blood off the pavement as I begged every single passerby for money.

“Please, I’m begging you. Save my brother.”

The wound on my forehead reopened. Blood and rainwater trickled into my mouth, leaving a bitter taste.

I took out loans through every lending app I could find. Once I’d scraped together enough for the surgery, they wheeled Mike into the OR.

After an endless wait, the surgeon came out and wearily pulled off his mask.

“I’m sorry. He was brought in too late. We missed the window to repair the nerve damage.

“The damage to your brother’s right leg is permanent. He’ll never walk normally again.”

My legs gave out, and I sank to the floor. I couldn’t make a sound.

When Mike woke up, he was strangely quiet.

He didn’t shed a single tear.

With his injured leg weighed down by a heavy cast, he struggled to lean toward me.

He clumsily reached out and wiped the mud and dried blood off my face.

“Daisy, let’s leave him. It doesn’t hurt.”

His voice was barely above a whisper, but every word cut straight through me.

Looking into Mike’s clear eyes, I felt the last of my foolish love for Jax finally die.

In its place was a hatred that cut to the bone.

I swore I would make them pay, and pay dearly.

His hands were covered in raw, purplish sores from the cold. When he looked up, his cloudy, bloodshot eyes met mine.I recognized Jax right away. The instant he recognized me, his eyes wen

When Jax woke to the smell of hospital disinfectant, he received news that felt worse than a death sentence. The doctor stood beside his bed, holding his scans. His voice was cold and matter-of-fact. “You’ve suffered severe spinal cord damage. The paralysis from your waist down is permanent. You’ll need a wheelchair for the rest of your life.”Jax frantically pounded his legs with his fists, but he couldn’t feel a thing. It was as if they no longer belonged to him.He dug out his phone and tried to borrow money from the friends who’d once claimed he was like family. But every single call ended the same way. They turned him down and blocked his number. All those friendships he’d bought with my hard-earned money vanished the moment he hit rock bottom.Jax couldn’t pay his hospital bill, so they kicked him out.He couldn’t afford a decent wheelchair, so he bought a beat-up skateboard for a few dozen bucks. He pushed himself along with his hands, inching his way back to that leaky, run-dow

It rained all day, and Jax stayed on his knees outside the entire time. The restaurant door stayed shut. After nightfall, the shutter finally screeched and slowly rolled up in the wind and rain.I stood on the step under a black umbrella.Jax was soaked through, his lips blue with cold. When he saw me, he looked up, full of hope.He forced a weak, eager smile at me, rain and blood streaking his face.“Daisy, I knew it. You still have feelings for me!”I let out a humorless laugh and shook my head at him.“Jax, do you think this proves how devoted you are?“You find this touching. I find it disgusting. Save the martyr act. It doesn’t work on me.”The smile froze on his face. Refusing to give up, he crawled two paces closer and reached for my ankle.I kicked his hand away without mercy.“You don’t actually love anyone.”I didn’t raise my voice, but every word carried clearly through the rain.“You only helped Camilla because you liked having her depend on you. It fed your savior complex.

With my broom in her face, Camilla shook all over.Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted Jax frozen nearby. Like she’d found a lifeline, she scrambled over to him.“Jax! Look at her! She hit me, and now she’s trying to kill me! Hurry up and teach her a lesson!”She clung to Jax’s pant leg, hoping he’d shield her with his broad frame and call me heartless, just as he’d done countless times before. But this time, Jax kicked her away as if she were something filthy. He didn’t even glance at Camilla on the ground. He kept his eyes glued to me, desperate to please.“Daisy, I’m sorry. I really didn’t know she’d come looking for you.”He came closer like a fawning lapdog. “You had every right to hit her. If you’re still angry, take it out on me. Do whatever you want, as long as you take me back.”“Get lost. Keep your filth off my doorstep.”I spat the words out coldly, turned, walked back into my shop, and yanked down the rolling shutter.Early the next morning, people crowded around the

Jax stood in the light of the setting sun, trembling all over with excitement. He shuffled up to the door, his eyes red, and reached out to grab the hem of my shirt.“Daisy...”His voice broke, choked with tears.“I finally found you. Do you have any idea what these three years have been like for me?“I dream about you every night. I know I was wrong. I really do.”He was trying to bring back the love and pity I’d once felt for him with his haggard appearance and tender gaze.In the past, all he had to do was look hurt like that, and I’d forgive him in a heartbeat, even if it meant hurting myself.I stopped what I was doing and slowly turned around.I looked at the man I’d once loved with everything I had, the man I’d have given my life for.I felt no hate, no resentment. Just the indifference you’d feel toward a stranger.I brushed his hand away, grabbed a napkin, and wiped the spot he’d touched.“Sir, you’ve got the wrong person.” My voice was flat. “If you’re here to eat, the line’s

Once Jax had Camilla settled at the hospital, he rushed back to the abandoned warehouse by the river. But it was too late. The firefighters had put out the blaze, and nothing was left of the warehouse but a charred frame. The acrid stench of smoke hung in the air as a bitter wind blew off the river. His eyes red, Jax tried to charge into the still-smoking ruins.“There’s still someone in there! My girlfriend’s still in there!”Several firefighters held him back, shouting at him to stop.“The fire was too big, and there was gasoline in there feeding it. There’s no sign anyone survived.“We’re sorry for your loss.”Jax broke free of the firefighters, and his legs gave out. He dropped to his knees in the mud and black ash.Jax ignored the heat still rising off the ground and dug through the ashes with his bare hands like a madman. His nails broke and his fingers bled, but he didn’t seem to feel any pain. Finally, at the edge of the rubble near the window, his hand closed on a familiar pie
