Chapter 4

Author: Peanut Butter
I wanted to burn holes through her with my stare.

No more playing nice. "She's Derrick's mom," I snapped. "If anything happens to her, Derrick's gonna make you pay when he shows up!"

Rosalie laughed—sharp and mean. "Wow. You'll really say anything. I heard you. You said she was your mother-in-law. So how'd she magically turn into Derrick's mom?"

She sneered. "You wrecked my day. I'll make sure you remember this—next time you go out, bring your eyes."

Georgina shook in my arms, barely breathing. Her heart condition was spiraling.

She needed her fast-acting meds. Now. Or she'd die.

My eyes burned as I screamed, "Help! Please—someone help us! She's dying!"

The pool deck stretched out, silent and empty. No one came.

Even Dmitry started to panic. "Rosalie, what if—"

She cut him off, ice-cold. "Relax. Old people are tougher than you think. She's faking it. My husband's on his way. Let them stay a few more minutes. If something was gonna happen, it already would've."

She was wrong.

Miss the rescue window by even a minute, and Georgina would die.

Despair crushed my chest.

Right then, the hotel manager rushed over. I screamed until my throat burned, "Help! She's having a heart attack! Get her out—now! Call an ambulance!"

He'd seen Georgina years ago but didn't recognize her anymore. One look at her state made him panic. He'd come over to suck up to Rosalie after hearing the commotion, not expecting things to turn deadly.

He hesitated—offend Rosalie, or risk a death on his shift and lose his job.

Finally, he turned on a polite smile. "Ms. Tucker, maybe let them out of the pool first? If something really happens, this pool won't be usable anymore."

Rosalie flicked him a look, all arrogance. "Fine. Since you're asking, I'll let them out."

The manager waved Dmitry over, and he dragged Georgina and me out of the pool.

She lay there, completely still. I didn't even stop to breathe—just sprinted to the locker room, grabbed my bag, and ran back.

Hands shaking, I dumped out her fast-acting heart pills and moved to get them into her mouth—

Rosalie kicked the bottle. Pills and all, straight into the pool.

I snapped my head up, shaking with rage. She curled her lip. "Drop the act. I already let you out. Now get lost. If you ever see me again, walk the other way. I'm being nice, letting you off this time."

Rage blew through me. I lunged and slapped Rosalie hard. "If anything happens to Georgina, I'll make you—and Derrick—pay."

She screamed, stunned I'd dared. "You're insane! I shouldn't have gone soft. I should've let you two bitches drown!"

I tried to go for her again, but Dmitry and the manager grabbed my shoulders. Rosalie went wild, slapping me over and over. More than I could count.

The sting snapped me back to reality. If I wasted another second, Georgina would die.

I tore free and yanked out my phone, dialing Derrick. "Derrick, Mom's having a heart attack. We're at the Solenne Hotel pool in Rivera. Get the closest medical team here now. If you're late, she'll die."

He sounded annoyed. "Your mom's had heart issues forever. Doesn't she know how to manage it? I'm in a meeting. Call an ambulance yourself."

Then he hung up.

I was shaking with rage. He'd heard "Mom" and thought I meant mine. Did he seriously not know whose mother had a heart condition?

The next second, Rosalie spun toward the entrance, lighting up. "Derrick—you're finally here!"

The guy was sharp, grounded, and totally locked in. Georgina knew what she was doing. When Derrick came charging back, he was totally blindsided when he found out Georgina had cut him out. He kept repeating it like it had to be some kind of mistake. He was her only child, yet she handed everything to someone else? He couldn't process it.But I knew—nobody hated cheaters more than Georgina. Derrick had watched his dad wreck her, and still, he turned around and did the same thing. He begged. Pleaded. But Georgina shut him out and left the country to recover. He tried hitting me up after that, but I'd already blocked him on everything. So he camped outside the company, desperate and out of moves.Julian and I ran into him that evening as we w

Right then, Rosalie's voice echoed from the doorway. "Why are you grabbing me? Let go! My husband is Derrick Hart!"Two bodyguards hauled her in. "She was lurking outside the room. Looked sketchy."Rosalie's eyes went wide and watery. "Derrick, I just wanted to say sorry to your mom..."Derrick snapped, "Didn't you hear her? Let her go!"The guards looked to Georgina. She gave a subtle nod.Rosalie rushed to Derrick, latched onto his arm. "They scared me half to death."Then she flashed Georgina a grin. "Sorry about yesterday. Didn't know you were Derrick's mom."Georgina didn't even look at her. "No need to apologize. The police will handle it."Derrick's face dropped. "Mom, what does that mean?"He spun on me. "Vera, did you say something? I told you—you're the only one I care about. You'll always be my wife. Why are you still going after Rosalie?"I didn't bother answering. Just pulled out the divorce papers and handed them over with a cold laugh. "Go after her? She means

I'd done the math. By now, Derrick should've dropped her off and been halfway back. The phone rang twice. Not Derrick.Rosalie answered with a sneer. "Vera Windsor. Still clinging on? How sad.""Put Derrick on," I said. "It's urgent."Georgina waved for me to hit speaker.Rosalie's voice oozed smug. "He's in the shower. We tried something new, and let's just say... he couldn't get enough. What've you got to compete with that? Honestly, walk away before it gets pathetic."I clenched my jaw. "Last time—put him on. His mom needs him."Rosalie gave a slow, fake gasp. "Oooh, let me check."I heard her call out: "Derrick, Vera's on the phone. Wanna talk to her?"He paused, thinking we weren't on yet. "Ignore it. I'll call her back when I get there. I'm heading out."Rosalie's voice turned sweet and fake. "Leaving already? You haven't even tried the new position. They say it's 'life-changing.'"A dull thud, then Derrick's low growl: "You little tease. Keep this up and you won't be

Derrick stepped in front of her right away, his voice tight. "Vera, what are you doing? Rosalie's still young. Don't sink to her level. I'll have her leave now. I promise—you'll never see her again."I looked at him, every last trace of love gone, and laughed coldly. "Derrick, you're so generous. The person she almost killed today was your mother."Rosalie yelled from behind him, "That's because of you! If you'd told me earlier she was Derrick's mom, why would I have done any of this?"This is your fault! You wanted to ruin my relationship with Derrick—so you're the one who tried to kill his mom! You're vicious and scheming!"She actually tried to dump everything on me. I was so angry I almost laughed.I didn't bother arguing. "I made her identity clear from the start. You chose not to believe it. I'm not explaining myself. This was attempted murder. I'm calling the police. Save it for them."I lifted my phone. Before I could dial, Derrick grabbed it out of my hand.Anger churne

She flew into his arms, clinging to him like she'd been wronged beyond belief. "Derrick, why did you take so long? Those two women bullied me so badly."She turned her face, still flushed from my slap, and pouted. "Look at this. That bitch hit me until my face swelled. You have to stand up for me this time. And you owe me—stay a few extra days and keep me company."Derrick's face twisted with concern, anger edging into his voice. "Who dared hit you? I won't let them get away with it. Don't worry—I cleared a whole week just for you. I'll stay with you this time."This was the same man who'd just hung up on me. The same man who'd clung to me last night, whining about being gone on a weeklong business trip, swearing he'd miss me.All lies. Every promise—worthless.Rosalie looped her arms around his waist and dragged him over, showing him off. She pointed at me. "It was her. She hit me. And the one on the ground is her mother-in-law. Hurry up and have someone teach them a lesson."I
