Chapter 2

Author: Chelsea
Five days remained until my “death” when my father sent a car to pick me up and bring me back home.

When I got into the car, motion sickness medicine and a bottle of room-temperature sparkling water had already been placed beside my seat.

I picked them up and glanced at them.

The driver explained, “The Don asked us to have those ready. He said you don’t like air freshener in the car, so we removed it beforehand.”

I put the medicine back.

Charles remembered everything. He remembered every little detail about me.

The only thing he forgot was to ask whether I was willing to leave.

My parents lived on an estate north of Palermo. Before the car had even fully stopped, my mother had already come out to greet me.

She hugged me.

“Helen.”

Her eyes were red again.

“I can’t bear to let you go.”

I said nothing, and she quickly released me.

“Come inside. The lawyer is waiting.”

I paused when I saw that the study was already filled with people: the Family’s lawyer, public relations consultants, and my father’s head of security.

On the table was a prepared death announcement.

[Helen Vison died in the port attack.]

Even the time it would be released publicly had been carefully marked.

The funeral arrangements, the chosen burial site, the public statement, and the time my personal social media accounts would be closed were all listed.

All public appearances involving Charles and me as a couple would be canceled. There was even a black-and-white photograph prepared to be released after my “death.”

The photograph had been taken last winter. Charles had been working in the study that day when I came downstairs, and he suddenly asked someone to take a picture of me.

At the time, I didn’t understand why he had done that. Charles only gave me a mysterious smile.

“You look especially beautiful today.”

Now that photograph had been chosen for my funeral.

How ironic.

My father took the documents from the lawyer.

“It’s just a formality. Everything has to look real, or they won’t believe it.”

I gave a bitter smile.

“Once I’m on that island, will I be able to contact you?”

My mother looked troubled, while my father immediately shook his head.

“It’s best not to. Phone calls, emails, and account logins could all leave traces.”

“What if I get sick?”

“Charles has arranged a private doctor.”

“Then will you come to see me?”

The study suddenly fell silent.

My mother walked toward me.

“Once it’s safe…”

She stopped there, because none of us knew when it would truly be safe.

I looked at her and said wearily, “So after I die, I won’t be able to contact you, and I won’t be able to come home either, right?”

“Helen, we’re only telling the world you’re dead. You’ll still be alive.”

My mother hurriedly took my hand, but I pulled it away coldly.

“What’s the difference? I can’t use my own name, I can’t come home, and I can’t see my parents.”

“But at least Sandra will live.”

My father suddenly spoke.

His voice was calm.

“And this war has to stop. Two docks have already been damaged, and several of our people have died. If this continues, more people will die.”

I looked at him, my expression blank.

“So the easiest solution is to let me die.”

My father frowned.

“Don’t say it like that. No one actually wants you to die.”

He pushed another document toward me.

“You’re just going to live somewhere else.”

I lowered my gaze.

It was a temporary access pass.

After leaving the banquet on the night of the explosion, I would pass through a private dock controlled by my father.

“Take this,” he said. “If you’re stopped at any checkpoints along the way, this will get you through.”

I accepted the card.

Only then did my mother show a small smile again.

“See? Everyone has already arranged everything for you.”

Before I left that afternoon, my mother pressed a jewelry box into my hands. Inside was an old gold chain.

I used to wear it all the time as a child.

“You could never sleep if you spent even one night away from home,” she said. “Take this with you. When you get there, at least you’ll have something from home.”

I held onto the box tightly.

“Mom.”

“Hmm?”

“If you had to choose which of us could stay, would you still choose Sandra?”

The smile on my mother’s face disappeared instantly.

After a long silence, she only said, “This situation is too serious. I don’t want her to take that risk.”

I gave a bitter inward laugh and nodded.

“I understand.”

The car left the estate.

I took out my phone and sent a message to a number I had not contacted in a very long time.

[Five days from now, I need a boat.]

Not long after, the reply came.

[Where to?]

I looked at the coastline rushing past outside the window.

[As far away as possible.]

Six months later, my room remained exactly as it had been, and Sandra never returned to the Vison estate again.Charles withdrew all the people, vehicles, and account permissions she had been able to access. The black SUV was parked back in the garage, and the keys remained in their original place. My mother came over once every week.Sometimes she sat beside my bed for an entire afternoon.Once, when a servant went in to deliver water, she heard my mother speaking to the empty room.“Helen, Mom will come again next week.”After saying that, she sat there in silence for a long time.My father locked the private dock access card inside a drawer in his study. But Charles never stopped searching for me.The surveillance footage around the harbor was reviewed countless times. Finally, in the third month, they found a blurry recording.Seven minutes after the explosion, an old car drove out of the back alley. His underboss enlarged the footage.“The car had a fake license plate and entered

Preparations for my funeral began. My father wanted to take my “body” back to the family cemetery, but Charles refused.“She is my wife.”My father’s expression turned grim.“She is also my daughter.”The two men stood on opposite sides of the long table, neither willing to give in.In the end, because neither of them was willing to compromise, the burial site was chosen on a private hillside outside Palermo. On the day of the funeral, my mother held the gold chain I had worn as a child the entire time. When the coffin was about to be closed, she suddenly rushed forward.“Wait!”The staff stopped. My mother placed the gold chain inside.“Helen couldn’t sleep if she was away from home for even one night when she was little. This needs to go with her.”Ivy stood beside her and suddenly spoke.“Madam.”My mother looked up and met Ivy’s red-rimmed eyes.“She was afraid of being alone when she was alive too.”My mother’s hand stopped.“But you still sent her alone to North America.”The gol

Charles had not slept for three days. All surveillance footage around the harbor had been reviewed again and again, and every vehicle within a ten-kilometer radius before and after the explosion had been checked.“Check again.”His underboss lowered his voice.“Boss, we’ve already gone through everything four times.”Charles looked up.“Then do it a fifth time.”No one dared to disobey him. The table was covered with photographs, and he had already looked through every single one of them dozens of times.Yet there was still no sign of me.He even went to the morgue himself. But when he reached the entrance, he stopped and never stepped inside. When the forensic doctor came out, Charles asked anxiously, his lips trembling slightly, “Did you find anything new?”“Not yet.”“What about the body?”“It’s still inside.”Charles glanced toward the door, but his feet never moved forward.“Continue the examination. Until we have the DNA results, we cannot confirm her identity.”After saying that

By the time morning arrived, Charles finally returned to the estate. He hadn’t changed his clothes. His suit was covered in dust, and his right palm was wrapped in a temporary bandage. When he pushed open the bedroom door, his footsteps stopped. My suitcase was still beside the bed, only half packed.A few pieces of clothing were scattered across the bed, while the new passport and the documents for my new identity were left on the table.Charles walked over and picked them up.Ellen Rossi, thirty-four years old, widowed, no children. His eyes remained fixed on the words “widowed.” After a moment, he suddenly threw the documents against the wall.“Who wrote this?”His underboss, standing at the doorway, froze for a moment.“What?”“Who told them to write that she was widowed on her identity documents?”“This was arranged beforehand to avoid being traced—”“Rip it up.”Before his underboss could step forward, Charles had already walked over and torn the thick stack of documents in half.

The relief on Charles’s face froze instantly.“What did you say?”The subordinate lowered his head nervously, not daring to look at him.“Boss, the body was found on the west side of the banquet hall.”Charles strode over and pulled away the white cloth covering the body. The next second, his hand stopped. The body had been burned beyond recognition. The charred dress was stuck to the skin, and only the faintest traces of its original color remained. It was the exact dress I had been wearing that night.“She’s not the one.”Charles covered the body again and closed his eyes. His lips trembled as he said, “Helen had already gone to the west passage. This isn’t her. It can’t be her.”The men exchanged glances, cold sweat forming on their foreheads. After a moment, Charles looked toward somewhere in the distance, his eyes already bloodshot.“Where is Mark?”A few minutes later, Mark was brought before him.His forehead was covered in blood. The moment he managed to stand steadily, Charles

Three hours remained until my death. The port banquet went ahead as scheduled.Aside from members of the Vison Family, many businessmen and representatives from other Families who had worked with Charles for years had also arrived. No one knew that at exactly nine o’clock tonight, a planned explosion would take place here.I stood in front of the mirror as Ivy zipped up my dress. Her hands were trembling uncontrollably.“Easy,” I said. “People will notice.”She glared at me with red eyes.“You’re really not afraid at all.”I smiled and shrugged.“I’m just going to live somewhere else.”The door opened, and Charles walked in.He had already changed into a black suit, with a gun hidden at his waist. His eyes fell on me, and he frowned.“Where’s your coat?”“It’s warm inside.”“It gets windy at the harbor at night.”He picked up the coat himself and draped it over my shoulders.Just like before, the slightest frown was enough for him to know what was bothering me.Charles fastened the top
