Chapter 1

After Charles left the study, I remained frozen for a long time.

A complete set of documents was spread across the table, including a new passport, a new bank account, and photographs of the private island in North America.

The water in the photographs was crystal blue. A white villa stood halfway up the mountain, and aside from the ocean surrounding it, there were no other buildings anywhere nearby.

Charles had even prepared a new name for me, Ellen Rossi.

Thirty-four years old, widowed, with no children and no ties to Sicily.

My personal assistant Ivy turned to the last page, and her expression became increasingly grim.

“He’s even decided what your name will be?”

I closed the file and said, “It saves me the trouble of coming up with one myself.”

“This isn’t funny, Helen.”

Her eyes turned red.

“Are you really planning to go?”

I didn’t answer.

There were seven days left until the port banquet.

Seven days later, an explosion would “kill” me.

Charles’s people would prepare an escape route on the western side of the banquet venue beforehand. Once the explosion happened, I only needed to leave through that route.

Within three minutes, a car that was not registered under the Vison Family would pick me up, and after that, I would leave by helicopter.

Then I would become Ellen Rossi.

Charles had arranged every step of the plan in great detail.

The documents even contained information about the brand of coffee I liked, the dishes the island’s chef specialized in, and the temperature my bedroom should be kept at.

He had always known me this well.

During the first year of our marriage, I was awakened in the middle of the night by gunshots from the estate’s training grounds.

By the next morning, the entire training ground had been moved to the other side of the estate.

Later, I learned that Charles had done it because of a casual complaint I had made.

Everyone in Sicily knew how ruthless he was.

A Capo who betrayed his Family could still sit across from him and drink coffee in the morning, only to disappear completely from the harbor by afternoon.

But I was the exception.

That was why, last night, when my mother and father were trying to persuade me to accept the plan, I was still waiting for him to change his mind.

I thought he would say, “Enough. Helen doesn’t have to go.”

But in the end, he had gently yet firmly arranged another life for me, one where I would disappear from Sicily forever.

Footsteps sounded outside the door.

Ivy had just put away the documents when Sandra pushed the door open.

Two armed bodyguards followed behind her. They were originally part of my security team.

I glanced at them, and Sandra noticed it as well. She immediately explained, “Charles said things aren’t safe outside right now, so he asked them to stay with me for the time being.”

“Okay.”

She stood there for a while. Seeing that I didn’t get angry, she seemed even more uncomfortable.

“Helen, I know I caused trouble this time, but I really didn’t mean to kill her.”

I looked at her expressionlessly.

“So the gun just went off by itself?”

Sandra’s face went pale.

“She insulted me first!”

“She said the Vison Family wouldn’t turn against them for my sake, and that I had no right to throw my weight around.”

“So you pulled the trigger.”

She bit her lip.

“I only wanted to scare her.”

But bullets did not care about intentions. The rival Don’s wife died on the spot.

Within twelve hours, one of the docks controlled by the Vison Family was bombed.

The next day, a cargo ship was ambushed while leaving the harbor.

By the third day, the two Families were forced to sit down at the negotiation table.

The other side wanted only Sandra.

My father refused, and my mother cried until she fainted right there.

In the end, the rival Don cast a pointed glance at me.

“Then I’ll have to find another way.”

He smiled and said, “I’ll make Charles feel what it’s like to lose his wife.”

That night, we received the intelligence.

The other side planned to strike again at the port banquet seven days later.

Charles decided to turn their plan against them and let everyone witness my death in that explosion.

Sandra walked up to me.

“I’m sorry.”

I looked at her and asked, “If Charles asked you to fake your death, would you agree?”

She froze.

At that moment, my mother’s voice came from the doorway.

“Helen.”

She had clearly heard what I said. My mother quickly walked in and pulled Sandra behind her.

“She already knows she was wrong. Why do you still have to pressure her?”

I found it absurd.

“I’m pressuring her?”

My mother frowned.

“She’s never known hardship. If you really send her alone to North America, how is she supposed to survive?”

“You’re different. You’ve always been smarter than her, and you’re more independent.”

Again, those same words.

Because I was more capable of taking care of myself, I was naturally the one who should be sent away.

When Charles returned that night, I was drinking alone on the balcony.

He took the glass from my hand.

“Don’t drink on an empty stomach.”

I looked at him, my eyes filling with tears.

“You’re still going to send me away?”

He paused.

“I’ll keep you safe.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Charles fell silent.

Without him saying anything, I already knew the answer.

And deep inside, I had already made my own decision.

Seven days later, I would take this chance to disappear from Charles’s life and my parents’ lives forever.

Six months later, my room remained exactly as it had been, and Sandra never returned to the Vison estate again.Charles withdrew all the people, vehicles, and account permissions she had been able to access. The black SUV was parked back in the garage, and the keys remained in their original place. My mother came over once every week.Sometimes she sat beside my bed for an entire afternoon.Once, when a servant went in to deliver water, she heard my mother speaking to the empty room.“Helen, Mom will come again next week.”After saying that, she sat there in silence for a long time.My father locked the private dock access card inside a drawer in his study. But Charles never stopped searching for me.The surveillance footage around the harbor was reviewed countless times. Finally, in the third month, they found a blurry recording.Seven minutes after the explosion, an old car drove out of the back alley. His underboss enlarged the footage.“The car had a fake license plate and entered

Preparations for my funeral began. My father wanted to take my “body” back to the family cemetery, but Charles refused.“She is my wife.”My father’s expression turned grim.“She is also my daughter.”The two men stood on opposite sides of the long table, neither willing to give in.In the end, because neither of them was willing to compromise, the burial site was chosen on a private hillside outside Palermo. On the day of the funeral, my mother held the gold chain I had worn as a child the entire time. When the coffin was about to be closed, she suddenly rushed forward.“Wait!”The staff stopped. My mother placed the gold chain inside.“Helen couldn’t sleep if she was away from home for even one night when she was little. This needs to go with her.”Ivy stood beside her and suddenly spoke.“Madam.”My mother looked up and met Ivy’s red-rimmed eyes.“She was afraid of being alone when she was alive too.”My mother’s hand stopped.“But you still sent her alone to North America.”The gol

Charles had not slept for three days. All surveillance footage around the harbor had been reviewed again and again, and every vehicle within a ten-kilometer radius before and after the explosion had been checked.“Check again.”His underboss lowered his voice.“Boss, we’ve already gone through everything four times.”Charles looked up.“Then do it a fifth time.”No one dared to disobey him. The table was covered with photographs, and he had already looked through every single one of them dozens of times.Yet there was still no sign of me.He even went to the morgue himself. But when he reached the entrance, he stopped and never stepped inside. When the forensic doctor came out, Charles asked anxiously, his lips trembling slightly, “Did you find anything new?”“Not yet.”“What about the body?”“It’s still inside.”Charles glanced toward the door, but his feet never moved forward.“Continue the examination. Until we have the DNA results, we cannot confirm her identity.”After saying that

By the time morning arrived, Charles finally returned to the estate. He hadn’t changed his clothes. His suit was covered in dust, and his right palm was wrapped in a temporary bandage. When he pushed open the bedroom door, his footsteps stopped. My suitcase was still beside the bed, only half packed.A few pieces of clothing were scattered across the bed, while the new passport and the documents for my new identity were left on the table.Charles walked over and picked them up.Ellen Rossi, thirty-four years old, widowed, no children. His eyes remained fixed on the words “widowed.” After a moment, he suddenly threw the documents against the wall.“Who wrote this?”His underboss, standing at the doorway, froze for a moment.“What?”“Who told them to write that she was widowed on her identity documents?”“This was arranged beforehand to avoid being traced—”“Rip it up.”Before his underboss could step forward, Charles had already walked over and torn the thick stack of documents in half.

The relief on Charles’s face froze instantly.“What did you say?”The subordinate lowered his head nervously, not daring to look at him.“Boss, the body was found on the west side of the banquet hall.”Charles strode over and pulled away the white cloth covering the body. The next second, his hand stopped. The body had been burned beyond recognition. The charred dress was stuck to the skin, and only the faintest traces of its original color remained. It was the exact dress I had been wearing that night.“She’s not the one.”Charles covered the body again and closed his eyes. His lips trembled as he said, “Helen had already gone to the west passage. This isn’t her. It can’t be her.”The men exchanged glances, cold sweat forming on their foreheads. After a moment, Charles looked toward somewhere in the distance, his eyes already bloodshot.“Where is Mark?”A few minutes later, Mark was brought before him.His forehead was covered in blood. The moment he managed to stand steadily, Charles

Three hours remained until my death. The port banquet went ahead as scheduled.Aside from members of the Vison Family, many businessmen and representatives from other Families who had worked with Charles for years had also arrived. No one knew that at exactly nine o’clock tonight, a planned explosion would take place here.I stood in front of the mirror as Ivy zipped up my dress. Her hands were trembling uncontrollably.“Easy,” I said. “People will notice.”She glared at me with red eyes.“You’re really not afraid at all.”I smiled and shrugged.“I’m just going to live somewhere else.”The door opened, and Charles walked in.He had already changed into a black suit, with a gun hidden at his waist. His eyes fell on me, and he frowned.“Where’s your coat?”“It’s warm inside.”“It gets windy at the harbor at night.”He picked up the coat himself and draped it over my shoulders.Just like before, the slightest frown was enough for him to know what was bothering me.Charles fastened the top
