Chapter 3

Author: Goodtale
Jonah's fiftieth birthday party filled the Gautier estate's main hall.

I left the new suit pants in the closet.

Instead, I pulled a white shirt and my old dress pants from the canvas duffel, then headed downstairs.

The place was packed.

Liam stood beside Jonah in a custom navy suit, greeting guests like he owned the room. A few polished lines had several socialites laughing.

The second he saw me on the stairs, he came over with a glass of champagne.

His eyes dragged over me.

"Troy, didn't the family have a suit made for you?" He spoke just loud enough for everyone nearby to hear. "Why are you wearing that?

"Not used to nice clothes? Or just don't know how to wear them?"

Two women nearby traded a look.

Anya pushed through the crowd.

Her eyes dropped to my old shirt, and her face tightened.

"Where's your new suit? The maid said it was delivered."

"It didn't fit."

"Didn't fit? It was custom-made." She stared at me. "Do you even know what today is? It's Dad's fiftieth birthday, and you're standing here dressed like that with everyone watching."

Liam sighed beside her.

"Anya, let it go. Troy's probably just not used to events like this—"

I turned and went upstairs.

When I came back, I had the suit pants in my hand.

I shook them open in front of everyone.

Under the chandelier, the inside seam had been neatly ripped apart.

The tear ran straight up from the hem.

I hooked my fingers into the tear and pulled it open nearly six inches.

"Custom-made." I tossed the pants onto the coffee table. "So who did this?"

Anya stared at the rip.

Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.

Liam's face tightened for half a second.

"Troy, maybe—"

"Maybe I ripped them myself?" I looked at him. "I ruined a brand-new suit just so I could show up in old pants? You think I'm crazy?"

The room went dead quiet.

Guests stood frozen, drinks in hand, staring at the torn pants on the coffee table.

The rip faced up for everyone to see.

Only then did Jonah turn around.

He looked at the pants. Then at me.

Finally, he motioned to Gary.

"Get rid of those."

Then he pulled me aside and lowered his voice.

"Don't make a scene today. Stay in a corner for now. After we cut the cake, I'll send someone for you."

He went right back to chatting with a real estate developer.

Liam followed, wineglass in hand.

No one looked at the pants again.

I found a quiet corner and stayed there.

A middle-aged man with a glass of red wine clapped Jonah on the shoulder.

"Jonah, you've got a fine son."

He pointed at Liam.

Jonah's grip tightened around his wineglass.

He didn't correct him.

I slowly turned my teacup between my fingers.

Halfway through the party, a maid rushed into the hall and whispered in Diana's ear.

Her face changed.

"The watch," the maid said, her voice shaking. "Mr. Gautier's antique watch—the one he gave Liam for his eighteenth birthday. It's missing."

Liam shot to his feet, his face going pale.

"That's impossible. I saw it this morning."

Gary searched the house with a few staff members.

They found the watch under my pillow.

He set it on the coffee table.

Every eye in the room swung to me.

Just like my first day.

Liam stood beside Diana, his voice shaky. "Mom, Troy couldn't have stolen it. He was probably just curious. Maybe he only wanted to look at it."

Anya frowned. "We're not exactly short on valuables. Couldn't you at least ask before taking it?"

Jonah said nothing.

Diana looked like she wanted to speak, but no words came out.

Rory stood among the guests with a glass of red wine.

She looked at the watch.

Then at me.

She turned to the woman beside her and smiled. "What did I tell you?"

I smiled back.

Then I set the voice recorder on the coffee table and hit play.

The day I left for the branch office, my suitcase held exactly what I'd arrived with.Nothing more.I opened the closet.Diana had filled it with new clothes. The tags were still on.I kept one outfit.Folded the rest.Left them on the bed with a note on top.[Thank you. I can't take all this with me.]Jonah waited downstairs, his suit jacket neatly buttoned."If anything happens at the branch, make a call. Not to me. Call Dean Winston. He has an office there."Diana kept stuffing things into my suitcase.Snacks.A bottle of hot sauce from her hometown. And an envelope with a bank card and a letter inside."You didn't read the last letter I gave you. This one's different. Take it. Whether you read it is up to you."I accepted it.The envelope was heavier than I expected.Anya leaned against the doorframe and slipped me a note."You're my brother. Here's my private number. Call me if anything comes up."I folded it and tucked it into the inner pocket of my canvas bag

The Gautier estate stayed quiet for the next week. One day, Jonah knocked on my door.He was carrying a small bag.Inside was the ointment the hospital had prescribed."Mr. Winston said your arm needed stitches. This is supposed to help with the scar."I took the bag and set it on the nightstand."Thanks."He stayed in the doorway. His eyes wandered around my room.It was still the north-facing one.Gary had offered to move me.I turned him down."You're really staying in this room?""I'm used to it."He was quiet for a while."Troy... I know I can't fix everything with a few gifts or a better room. But if you need anything—""I don't need you to make it up to me."I paused."You lost eighteen years with me."You can't make that up."He didn't argue. His hand rested on the doorframe as he stood there for a long moment. Then he walked away. After he left, my phone lit up.Dean.[The three men confessed. I got back from Zoe's gym around ten that night.A narrow alley led to the Gautier estate. The streetlight had been dead for weeks. As I reached the entrance, I stopped.Three men.Balanced stance.Steady breathing. They were trained. Not random thugs. One blocked the entrance while the other two stepped out of the shadows. No one spoke. They weren't here to scare me.They were here to put me down. The first guy rushed in with a punch.I slipped outside it, knocked his arm aside, and drove an elbow into his chest. He grunted and stumbled back. The second came from my left.Something flashed in his hand.A knife.I leaned back just enough. The blade sliced past my sleeve.I grabbed his wrist and twisted. The knife clattered to the ground. Then I buried a left hook in his ribs.He folded and dropped to his knees. The third guy was behind me.I spun, but he was already there.Something cold sliced across my arm.Not a knife.A razor blade held between his finge

I walked out of the banquet hall.Behind me, the silence sank like a rock.I skipped dinner that night.Three knocks hit my door.Jonah stood in the hallway, his suit jacket over one arm. A deep wrinkle cut across the back of his shirt."Troy." His voice came out rough. "Can we talk?""No need to apologize. Where I'm from, actions mean more than words."***The next morning, Jonah did something he'd never done before. He started to serve me, hesitated, then quietly set food on my plate.Anya sat down. Not next to Liam.Next to me.She scooted her chair back just a little, leaving a bit of space. But she sat beside me.Liam kept his head down through the entire meal.He never looked up.Diana spoke carefully. Liam's voice filled the room. "He just grew up in a small town. He's not used to people like us. Don't take it personally."Rory cut in. "He's upset? What's he got to be upset about?"Then came the kitchen recording from that night."On the day of the banquet, put it under his pillow. Once they find it, don't say anything. Just keep your head down..."Do this, and you'll get enough to cover your son's tuition for two years..."The hall went silent.Even quieter than when they'd found the watch.Rory froze, all the color draining from her face. The voice in the first recording was hers.Liam went ghost-white.Diana gripped the armrest, her knuckles pale. She didn't look at Liam. Her eyes stayed on the antique watch lying facedown on the coffee table.Jonah wasn't looking at the watch. He was looking at me.His throat worked.Anya quietly stepped back, putting space between herself and Liam.I clicked off the recorder.
