I pressed. "What do you have left to repay that with?"

Rick's lips parted, but he could only manage, "Honey, please..."

"Don't call me that," I cut him off. "It makes me sick."

I walked past him to Helen's grave and laid down the white lilies I had prepared. "Mom, I came to see you. Everything's good now. You can rest in peace."

I told her about reclaiming the company and Rick's ruin, as if she were still beside me.

Rick stood in place, motionless.

When I finished and turned to leave, he s

Suddenly, I realized that I hadn't looked at anyone with such seriousness in a long time.I pushed the contract back toward Ryan, and his eyes dimmed. Right then, I pulled out a pen from my bag and added a clause at the bottom.[Party A must promise to love Party B for a lifetime, with no falsehoods and no pretense.]I signed it and handed him the pen. "Now it's your turn."After the initial shock, he picked up the pen and solemnly signed his name. Once he finished, he pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly. His voice trembled slightly. "Eleanor, thank you."As I rested my head against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart, the anxiety I had carried for so long finally ceased....After we got together, life was calm and happy. He took care of me well and helped me believe in love again. We worked together, traveled together, and turned our lives into poetry.A year later, I received a call from an unknown number. On the other end of the phone was someone

"Eleanor, don't go! Please don't leave me!"He cried like a lost puppy. "I have nothing left now. You can't abandon me like this."I looked down at the man I had once loved, now reduced to groveling desperation. I felt no pity. "You love role-playing so much, don't you?"I crouched down to meet his eyes. "You played the bankrupt deadbeat so convincingly. Why quit now?"He stiffened, and I pressed on. "You said you were broke and had no money to treat Hele

Offending Apex meant professional exile in Sylirend.Desperate, Rick finally tracked me down at a quiet café I frequented. He looked haggard, with an unkempt beard, a wrinkled suit, and bloodshot eyes."Eleanor!" he called out, his voice hoarse.I paused and regarded him coolly."It was you, wasn't it?""Yes."He seemed to deflate, stepping back and leaning against the wall for support."Why? Just because of those games? Because I didn't pay for Helen's surgery?" He gave a broken laugh. "You know that company was my everything.""And you knew Helen was my only family," I countered. He was speechless. "We're a couple...""Not anymore." I cut him off. "This is what you deserve. You loved playing the broke loser. Now you get to live it for real.""You can't do this to me!" He lunged forward, trying to grab me. "All those years we had together..."Two bodyguards emerged from behind me and blocked him. They were arranged by Ryan to protect me."Mr. Holden, please keep your dist

A black Bentley waited at the curb. The rear window lowered, revealing a sharply defined profile. It was none other than Ryan, older and more mature now, with a harder edge to his features. He looked at me and paused. "What happened to you?"I looked down at my drenched body and scratched arms, smiling bitterly. "It's a long story.""Get in. We'll talk inside," he said. The car pulled smoothly away from the crumbling neighborhood, and he handed me a blanket."I just came back to the country and was handling some matters when Antonio told me about Helen. I'm sorry I wasn't here earlier," he said solemnly.I shook my head. "It's not your fault."If he hadn't appeared today, I couldn't imagine what would have happened to me."What exactly happened?" he asked, eyeing the scratches on my arms.I took a breath and told him everything—things between Rick and me as well as Helen's death. I recounted it calmly, without exaggeration, but the temperature in the car seemed to drop.Ryan

I looked down at the shattered frame and Helen's fractured smile.Suddenly, I felt nothing mattered anymore. Be it dignity, freedom, or my future. All of it was weightless compared to the loss of her.Slowly, I bent my knees, and Zoe's eyes gleamed with satisfaction. Rick softened slightly, pleased with my submission.Just as my knees were about to touch the floor, someone knocked on the door, measured and deliberate.Rick paused, frowning. "Who is it?"There was no answer, just three more knocks. Irritated, Rick strode over and yanked the door open.A towering man in a black suit stood there, flanked by two others dressed identically. He surveyed the chaotic scene inside, his brow creasing almost imperceptibly."May I ask if Ms. Eleanor Marsh is here?" he asked, his tone polite yet carrying undeniable authority.Rick blocked the doorway. "Who are you? What do you want with her?""Our boss, Mr. Ryan Pierce, is looking for Ms. Marsh." The man's gaze moved past Rick to me. "He i

As I stepped into the hallway, an overpowering cloud of perfume hit me.Zoe stood at my door, posing like she owned the place. A smirk adorned her face."What are you doing here?" I said coldly."Just checking on you," she taunted. "Seeing how the abandoned wife is holding up."She eyed my drenched, miserable state and laughed. "Pathetic. Lost your job, right? Rick says he'll make sure you can't survive in Sylirend—that you'll come crawling back, begging.""Let him wait." I brushed past her and unlocked the door."Big talk." She followed me inside, sauntered over to the framed portrait of Helen, and picked it up. "Your mom would be so disappointed in how ungrateful you are.""Put it down!" I barked."Touchy, are we?" She tossed it lightly in her hands. "What if I accidentally drop it?""I said put it down!" I repeated, lunging to grab it.She shrieked theatrically and let go. The frame hit the floor and shattered, glass splintering across Helen's smiling face.Rage surged th
