Chapter 3

Author: Elevina
As if he had somehow heard my thoughts, Lucas suddenly grew uneasy. “Something does seem off. Fiona’s always seen through our little tricks. She should have figured it out by now and come storming in here to demand an explanation.”

Hailey teased him deliberately, “I think you just miss Fiona.”

“Shouldn’t you be glad she hasn’t come to make a scene? What’s so strange about that?”

My father chimed in, trying to reassure him. “Don’t worry. I’ve already told the men guarding the house to notify me immediately if anything seems wrong.”

Richard’s expression darkened as he began to reconsider what they had done. “Mom has a heart condition. She can’t handle a scare like this, and Mia is still such a timid little girl. Without me there, Jenny might have a hard time calming her down.”

My father paused, then patted Richard on the shoulder. “You’re overthinking it. I’ve already had all the guns in the house taken away and ordered the doors locked. As long as they stay inside and behave, nothing will happen to them. It’s just a prank, after all. I could never bear to hurt them.”

In a corner where no one could see her, Hailey lowered her head guiltily.

I watched as she secretly pulled out her phone to send a message before making an excuse to leave the living room and go to the bathroom.

I followed close behind until she stopped in front of a man whose face was still smeared with blood.

He was the very subordinate who had rushed back earlier to deliver the news.

“Did you take care of everything I told you to do?” Hailey asked.

The man nodded frantically. “Everything’s done. I delivered the pills to Fiona’s mother myself, and I made sure the men guarding the house understood that they weren’t to open the door under any circumstances.”

Still seeming unconvinced, Hailey pressed him again. “Are you sure they’ll do as you say?”

The subordinate gave a contemptuous laugh. “Relax. I told them the orders came from the Don. They wouldn’t dare disobey.”

Hailey took out a bank card but didn’t hand it over immediately, merely watching him in silence until he understood what she wanted to hear.

He quickly played dumb and assured her, “I’ve never met you before, and I certainly never delivered any messages on your behalf.”

Only then did she hand over the card, and the man finally got the money he had been promised.

Hailey turned toward the house with a smug smile and murmured, “Fiona, if you think you can take anything from me, you’ll have to try again in your next life.”

That was when I finally understood that the entire tragedy had been Hailey’s doing.

She had taken my possessions and stolen the love that should have been mine, and although I had resented her for it, I had never once considered seeking revenge.

Even that hadn’t been enough for her. She wanted me dead, even if it meant killing the others too.

I trembled with rage, unable to contain myself any longer, and swung my hand at her face with all my strength, only for it to pass straight through her body.

The moment Hailey turned around, she spotted Richard standing behind her.

Recognizing the subordinate who had delivered the message earlier, he raised his voice and demanded, “What’s going on? Has something happened at home?”

Hailey quietly breathed a sigh of relief at his question, but then she suddenly burst into tears and looked at him reproachfully. “Richard, are you blaming me for this? It’s all my fault for insisting on playing this game and making you worry. Why don’t we just call it off and go home now?”

The more she spoke, the harder she cried, until the others inside heard the commotion and hurried out to see what was happening. They found Richard standing there at a loss, with Hailey looking utterly aggrieved beside him.

When my father learned what had happened, he immediately stepped in to soothe her. “Richard didn’t mean to snap at you, Hailey. Don’t take it to heart. We’ve already agreed to this, so we should keep our word and return home tomorrow as planned.”

Only then did Hailey stop crying and throw herself into my father’s arms.

Watching them together like one happy family, I couldn’t help feeling that the whole scene was bitterly ironic.

Father, our home is already gone.

Hearing Hailey speak with such shameless defiance, Richard rushed over in a fit of rage and shoved her to the ground.Yet she continued laughing, and the more she laughed, the more chilling it became.“Let me tell you something else. I was the one who started the fire all those years ago. I deliberately knocked Fiona unconscious and planned to throw her into the flames to burn alive. And what did you do? You took the very person who tried to kill your daughter into your home and then expected your own daughter to keep putting up with me.”Her confession shattered what little composure they had left, and I was no exception. It felt as though another knife had pierced my chest, leaving me in unbearable pain.Every time I had accommodated Hailey and swallowed my grievances over the past ten years had now become a cruel joke.Without her, I could have lived a life filled with happiness.Lucas's expression turned icy as he ordered in a low voice, “Take her away immediately. Without my permi

Hailey’s legs nearly gave way, and she almost collapsed to the floor. She struggled to suppress her fear and remain calm, but before she could ask why everyone was sitting there, the door opened.Claude, the man who had extorted money from her earlier that day, appeared before them, covered in blood and badly injured.Their eyes met, but Hailey immediately lowered her head guiltily.Richard ignored Claude’s injuries and pressed his foot hard against them. “Claude, you deliberately delivered a false message and caused our family to die. If you confess who was behind this, I might consider leaving you with your whole body.”Hailey deliberately tried to confuse the issue. “Maybe he had his own motives and did everything by himself.”My father shook his head. “He’s only a subordinate. A single dose of that poison costs five hundred thousand dollars. He couldn’t possibly manage it alone.”Lucas waved to his assistant and ordered, “I have no more patience to waste on him. Starting now, cut o

Although they no longer questioned Hailey, they refused to believe that we had all taken our own lives for no reason.Finding the person responsible became their sole obsession, and they sent the bodies to the most prestigious forensic institute for examination. The forensic pathologist confirmed that everyone except me had died from poisoning. “This is an extremely rare poison, with Taxine B as its main ingredient. It can only be extracted from large quantities of yew trees.”Everyone’s expression turned grave at those words.Throughout Sicily, the only place where hundreds of yew trees were cultivated was the Rossetti family’s private greenhouse.Hailey feigned shock and exclaimed, “So the Rossetti family was behind all of this!”“No, they aren’t the killers,” Lucas immediately rejected the idea.Although he had always been at odds with the Rossetti family, he knew them well enough to understand that they preferred direct confrontation and would never stoop to such despicable methods

Hailey stood outside, watching everything unfold, her face as pale as a sheet. She had just turned to leave when Lucas stopped her.“Hailey, where do you think you’re going? Your prank has left them all dead. You owe us an explanation.”He raised his gun and aimed it at her.Terrified, Hailey’s legs gave way, and she dropped to her knees, shaking her head frantically. “I didn’t do it! I swear, I don’t know anything about this.”My father questioned her in a low, stern voice. “If we hadn’t stayed to celebrate your birthday, how would they have died?”“Is celebrating my birthday a crime?”Hailey’s eyes reddened as tears streamed down her face.“I’ve been with all of you since last night. If I had done anything, you would know better than anyone. If I’d known this prank would cost them their lives, I never would have suggested it in the first place.”Richard stared straight into her eyes. “But wasn’t the fake-death prank your idea?”Hailey nodded, readily admitting it. “Yes, it was my ide

My father could hardly believe what he was seeing, repeating over and over, “Impossible. How could this have happened?”He stumbled over to Mom and gently caressed her face. “Catherine, I’m home. Open your eyes and look at me, please. How could you be so foolish? It was only a joke. Please, don’t leave me!”But Mom didn’t respond. He rested his head against her chest, where her heartbeat had long since stopped, yet he continued to shout, “Call a doctor! I’ll find the best doctor to save you!”Seeing my father’s regret brought me no satisfaction.Dad, it was too late. The moment you agreed to Hailey’s prank, you sealed our fate.Richard used up all his strength just getting those few steps to his wife and daughter before sinking to the floor, desperately shaking their bodies. “Mia, are you angry with Daddy because I didn’t come home on time? Please don’t be like this. I even bought you the rabbit plushie you’ve wanted for so long!”But Mia’s lips remained tightly closed, and the little

Early the next morning, the cars for the journey home were lined up neatly outside the estate. My father held a bouquet of tulips in his arms, knowing they were my mother’s favorite flowers. Before they set off, he made a point of reminding everyone, “Once we get back and reveal the truth, every one of us must apologize. We made them worry all night, so if they’re angry with us, we’ll have to be understanding.”Richard gazed fondly at the gifts he had prepared for his wife and daughter, a ring he had made by hand, engraved with Jenny’s name, and the stuffed bunny Mia had been begging him for.He smiled. “Once they see these, they won’t be angry anymore.”Meanwhile, Lucas carefully folded the coat he had brought for me, smoothing out every wrinkle before putting it away.Hailey teased him, “The heating at home is more than enough. Why would Fiona need such a thick coat?”“You don’t understand,” Lucas explained, his attention still fixed on the coat. “She gets cold easily.”Seeing how mu
