Chapter 2

Author: Elevina
My spirit drifted to the estate on the west side of the city, the very place my father, Arthur, had built especially for me.

On the day I was born, he had been so overcome with joy that he vowed in front of everyone to make me the happiest girl in all of Sicily.

He had always doted on me, but everything changed after Hailey saved me from a fire and was welcomed into our family as my adopted sister.

“Thank you all for celebrating my birthday with me. It really means so much to me!”

“But maybe we should head back. Fiona might already be upset with us.”

Hailey looked at everyone with feigned concern, pretending to have their best interests at heart, but my father merely waved her worries away. “We agreed to return tomorrow, so tomorrow it is.”

Richard nodded in agreement. “Exactly. Fiona’s had us by her side for over twenty years. This is the first time we’ve celebrated your birthday with just you. You’re both our sisters, after all. We should treat you equally.”

Hearing everyone defend her, Hailey finally broke into a satisfied smile before turning to Lucas. “What about you? Aren’t you worried Fiona will make a scene?”

Lucas seemed to picture exactly that, his brow furrowing instinctively. “She’s the Donna. She should be more understanding. Besides, she already has more than enough. Even this estate belongs to her, so why would she begrudge me spending a day celebrating your birthday with you?”

What he had conveniently forgotten was how Hailey had burst into tears the very first time she visited this estate, claiming she envied me for having such a wonderful father.

That very evening, my father bought a plot of land in the city center and built a hotel named after her, which went on to be hailed as the most luxurious hotel in the city.

My mother had questioned whether he was showing Hailey too much favoritism, but he had simply laughed and replied, “She saved Fiona’s life, and now she’s our daughter, too. Of course we should treat her well.”

Richard had also taken Hailey’s kindness toward me as a reason to defend her unconditionally.

Little by little, however, they had forgotten why they had welcomed her into our family in the first place, and instead kept telling me to accommodate her, insisting that I stop picking on her.

The truth was, I had done nothing wrong.

Hailey turned to Lucas, her eyes shining with anticipation. “So, did you get me a birthday present?”

Rather than answer, Lucas handed her an elegantly wrapped gift box.

The moment she opened it, I froze.

Inside lay a dagger that looked exactly like the one I had clutched in my final moments.

Hailey feigned surprise. “Isn’t this Fiona’s beloved jeweled dagger?”

“I switched the daggers. The sapphire matches your eyes. It suits you better.”

Hailey hesitated, putting on an expression of reluctance as she examined the gift. “But this sapphire is one of a kind. I heard you paid thirty million dollars for it at an auction, specifically to give to Fiona as an engagement present. Are you really giving something so meaningful to me? What if people think you’ve fallen for someone else?”

Lucas didn’t seem bothered in the slightest. “Of course I love Fiona. Nothing anyone says will change that.”

Richard chimed in gently, trying to reassure her. “Go ahead and accept it. Lucas will make it up to Fiona with something else.”

Lucas said nothing, which was as good as agreeing.

A sharp ache twisted in my chest.

Not one of them cared how I felt, and none of them seemed to think there was anything wrong with Lucas taking something precious to me and giving it away without my permission.

Hailey’s smile widened as she asked, “Can we play another game like this for my birthday next year?”

My father looked at her fondly. “What do you have in mind for next year?”

Her eyes lit up. “How about Lucas showing up with divorce papers and tricking Fiona into thinking he wants a divorce?”

Lucas’s expression darkened. “Absolutely not. Knowing Fiona, she’d make a huge scene.”

“Then you could propose to her all over again and turn it into a surprise. Wouldn’t that be even better?”

Richard eagerly joined in, encouraging them. “Now that sounds exciting!”

In the end, Lucas reluctantly agreed. “Fine, but you’ll all have to help me stop Fiona from leaving when the time comes. Make sure she doesn’t actually walk out on me.”

I could only manage a bitter smile.

Lucas, I was already gone.

Hearing Hailey speak with such shameless defiance, Richard rushed over in a fit of rage and shoved her to the ground.Yet she continued laughing, and the more she laughed, the more chilling it became.“Let me tell you something else. I was the one who started the fire all those years ago. I deliberately knocked Fiona unconscious and planned to throw her into the flames to burn alive. And what did you do? You took the very person who tried to kill your daughter into your home and then expected your own daughter to keep putting up with me.”Her confession shattered what little composure they had left, and I was no exception. It felt as though another knife had pierced my chest, leaving me in unbearable pain.Every time I had accommodated Hailey and swallowed my grievances over the past ten years had now become a cruel joke.Without her, I could have lived a life filled with happiness.Lucas's expression turned icy as he ordered in a low voice, “Take her away immediately. Hailey’s legs nearly gave way, and she almost collapsed to the floor. She struggled to suppress her fear and remain calm, but before she could ask why everyone was sitting there, the door opened.Claude, the man who had extorted money from her earlier that day, appeared before them, covered in blood and badly injured.Their eyes met, but Hailey immediately lowered her head guiltily.Richard ignored Claude’s injuries and pressed his foot hard against them. “Claude, you deliberately delivered a false message and caused our family to die. If you confess who was behind this, I might consider leaving you with your whole body.”Hailey deliberately tried to confuse the issue. “Maybe he had his own motives and did everything by himself.”My father shook his head. “He’s only a subordinate. A single dose of that poison costs five hundred thousand dollars. He couldn’t possibly manage it alone.”Lucas waved to his assistant and ordered, “I have no more patience to waste on him. Starting now, cut o

Although they no longer questioned Hailey, they refused to believe that we had all taken our own lives for no reason.Finding the person responsible became their sole obsession, and they sent the bodies to the most prestigious forensic institute for examination. The forensic pathologist confirmed that everyone except me had died from poisoning. “This is an extremely rare poison, with Taxine B as its main ingredient. It can only be extracted from large quantities of yew trees.”Everyone’s expression turned grave at those words.Throughout Sicily, the only place where hundreds of yew trees were cultivated was the Rossetti family’s private greenhouse.Hailey feigned shock and exclaimed, “So the Rossetti family was behind all of this!”“No, they aren’t the killers,” Lucas immediately rejected the idea.Although he had always been at odds with the Rossetti family, he knew them well enough to understand that they preferred direct confrontation and would never stoop to such despicable methods

Hailey stood outside, watching everything unfold, her face as pale as a sheet. She had just turned to leave when Lucas stopped her.“Hailey, where do you think you’re going? Your prank has left them all dead. You owe us an explanation.”He raised his gun and aimed it at her.Terrified, Hailey’s legs gave way, and she dropped to her knees, shaking her head frantically. “I didn’t do it! I swear, I don’t know anything about this.”My father questioned her in a low, stern voice. “If we hadn’t stayed to celebrate your birthday, how would they have died?”“Is celebrating my birthday a crime?”Hailey’s eyes reddened as tears streamed down her face.“I’ve been with all of you since last night. If I had done anything, you would know better than anyone. If I’d known this prank would cost them their lives, I never would have suggested it in the first place.”Richard stared straight into her eyes. “But wasn’t the fake-death prank your idea?”Hailey nodded, readily admitting it. “Yes, it was my ide

My father could hardly believe what he was seeing, repeating over and over, “Impossible. How could this have happened?”He stumbled over to Mom and gently caressed her face. “Catherine, I’m home. Open your eyes and look at me, please. How could you be so foolish? It was only a joke. Please, don’t leave me!”But Mom didn’t respond. He rested his head against her chest, where her heartbeat had long since stopped, yet he continued to shout, “Call a doctor! I’ll find the best doctor to save you!”Seeing my father’s regret brought me no satisfaction.Dad, it was too late. The moment you agreed to Hailey’s prank, you sealed our fate.Richard used up all his strength just getting those few steps to his wife and daughter before sinking to the floor, desperately shaking their bodies. “Mia, are you angry with Daddy because I didn’t come home on time? Please don’t be like this. I even bought you the rabbit plushie you’ve wanted for so long!”But Mia’s lips remained tightly closed, and the little

Early the next morning, the cars for the journey home were lined up neatly outside the estate. My father held a bouquet of tulips in his arms, knowing they were my mother’s favorite flowers. Before they set off, he made a point of reminding everyone, “Once we get back and reveal the truth, every one of us must apologize. We made them worry all night, so if they’re angry with us, we’ll have to be understanding.”Richard gazed fondly at the gifts he had prepared for his wife and daughter, a ring he had made by hand, engraved with Jenny’s name, and the stuffed bunny Mia had been begging him for.He smiled. “Once they see these, they won’t be angry anymore.”Meanwhile, Lucas carefully folded the coat he had brought for me, smoothing out every wrinkle before putting it away.Hailey teased him, “The heating at home is more than enough. Why would Fiona need such a thick coat?”“You don’t understand,” Lucas explained, his attention still fixed on the coat. “She gets cold easily.”Seeing how mu
