Chapter 1

I stepped back subtly, keeping my expression calm, and tilted the wine glass in my hand.

"Grayson," I asked with a faint smile, "are you proposing to the wrong person? Isn't your proposal supposed to be for Tanya?"

"I knew you were still jealous of Tanya." Grayson Caldwell's expression shifted slightly at my words. "It's been three years. You still haven't gotten over it? How many times have I told you…"

"You only see Tanya as a sister. There's nothing between you two," I finished the sentence for him, my voice steady.

There was no other reason—I had heard this line a hundred times before.

Every time Grayson left me, his official girlfriend, for this so-called "sister," he would say the exact same thing.

He paused, caught off guard by my words, then softened his tone.

"Three years ago… I wasn't in a good state. Didn't I explain it to you? Tanya was seriously ill. She needed someone to care for her, and I was afraid our marriage would upset her.

"Who knew that the very next day, you'd throw a tantrum and leave without a word, making me wait three long years?

"But thankfully, today, you came back for me.

"This time, marry me and stay. Be my wife, officially, in the Caldwell family."

He spoke with such certainty that it almost made me laugh.

"When did I ever say I came back for you?" I replied. "I will not marry you."

Grayson froze, disbelief flashing in his eyes before giving way to a look of stubborn certainty—he clearly didn't believe me.

"You're still angry, aren't you?" He stood, reaching for my hand, but I lightly pulled away.

My friends quickly stepped in, trying to reason with me.

"Alexa, just forgive him. He had his reasons back then."

"Yeah, these past years, Grayson has been looking for you. When he heard you were coming back, he prepared this proposal as a surprise."

Buoyed by their support, Grayson smiled with that determined look and lifted the ring toward my hand.

I let a cold smile tug at my lips and, in one swift motion, slammed the ring onto the floor.

It bounced and rolled away, but my gaze landed on the red roses in his hand.

"Grayson," I said, mercilessly piercing through his pretense, "I like white roses. Red roses… those were always for Tanya."

The words barely left my lips before the room fell silent. The entire private room froze.

Then, a familiar voice called from behind me.

"Alexa, please forgive Grayson!"

Tanya stepped forward, picking up the ring, tears welling in her eyes as she turned to Grayson.

"It's all my fault. If it weren't for me, you two wouldn't have missed out on so many years. If I had known it would come to this… I might as well have died back then."

She coughed, panic overtaking her, her pale face growing even paler.

Grayson immediately stopped thinking about confronting me and rushed to support her, worry etched on his face.

"Why are you here? Weren't you supposed to stay home and rest?"

Watching their closeness, I let out a quiet sigh.

Had I known this drama would unfold at today's welcome party, I wouldn't have come at all.

I nodded to the others in the room. "I just got back from abroad and need to adjust to the time difference. I'll leave first and rest. We can meet again another time."

As I turned to leave, Grayson tried to stop me, but I ignored him, pushing open the door to the private room and walking out without a hint of hesitation.

For my daughter's sake, I had no choice but to venture out alone, to the place he had designated—the wedding home we had once decorated together."Don't you find this place familiar?" Grayson's eyes lit up with sudden nostalgia the moment he saw me.I forced my trembling voice steady. "Where's my daughter? Where is she?""Shh!" Grayson lowered his voice, a strange edge to it. "Our daughter is asleep."Something in his tone immediately set off alarm bells. I looked at his twisted expression and dared not make a sudden move. His mental state was clearly unstable."Can you tell me which room she's in? I just want to check on her," I said, forcing calm into my voice, soft and measured. The moment he saw I was responding, his face lit up with satisfaction."Sure. I'll take you there."He stepped closer and took my hand. This time, I didn't pull away. I let him lead me upstairs. Before ascending, I lightly touched my earring to ensure the communicator was on.Thankfully, our daught

Lucas signaled to the assistant behind him, and the assistant immediately scooped up our daughter and left.Once she was gone, Lucas stepped closer, placing me behind him like a shield. He cupped my face, studying me carefully, then pressed a gentle kiss to my forehead."She was quite a handful," he murmured. "I got back late, but I'm glad you're safe.""Daughter?" Grayson's voice trembled with disbelief. "You actually… have a daughter with him?"He lunged at Lucas in a blind rage, trying to push him away, but Lucas shoved him back with equal force.A punch flew. Grayson retaliated with a savage blow. And then they were locked in a furious struggle.I couldn't just stand by. I wasn't about to let Lucas lose. I dashed into the house, grabbed a broom, and slammed it into Grayson while he wasn't paying attention."You… hit me?" Grayson gasped, stunned, turning to glare at me.Lucas took the opportunity to kick him to the floor. "You're hitting me… for this man?""How many time

I had just returned to the country, and between managing the acquisition and taking over Hartman Group, I barely had a moment to breathe.Late at night, after a grueling day of overtime, I finally reached the parking lot—only to hear the unmistakable sound of hurried footsteps behind me."Alexa," Grayson's voice rang out again, persistent as ever. "Spare Caldwell Group. As long as you let Caldwell Group go, I'll agree to anything you want."He looked simultaneously aggrieved and self-righteous, and I couldn't help but laugh at him."You're not still under the impression that I came back for you, are you?" I asked. But Grayson stubbornly grabbed my wrist. "Don't deny it—you have feelings for me.""I already checked. Your marriage to Lucas is a family alliance. There's no love between you."This time, he didn't even come back with you—doesn't that show he doesn't care? Divorce him, and we get married. Hartman Group provides the funds, we get through this together, and I'll treat y

The scandalous news was only the first step—I knew it wasn't enough to take down Caldwell Group entirely.I leaked it merely to avenge his infidelity all those years ago.In fact, I had been planning the acquisition for two years, long before returning to the country.Every project Caldwell Group had undertaken in the past six months had been subtly manipulated by me, because Grayson would never suspect that the assistant he trusted most was actually my agent. His personal assistant was a student I had funded. I had arranged for them to enter Caldwell Group and, over the course of a year, rise to their current position.Through this assistant, I learned the details of many of Caldwell Group's projects, including their tax evasion schemes—but I lacked concrete evidence.I only needed one opportunity, one chance to obtain proof.Today, my visit to Caldwell Group was precisely to elicit that chance from Grayson himself. The moment I left Caldwell Group, I compiled all the evidence

Grayson hadn't even processed what was happening. He blurted out instinctively, "Mr. Hearst… of course not! I only said I wanted Hartman Group to fail. How could I ever disrespect your wife?"To his shock, the "Mr. Hearst" he had just spoken to stepped forward. In one swift motion, he pulled me into his arms and said sharply, "Alexa is my wife!"Grayson froze, completely dumbfounded.I looked at Lucas Hearst's mischievous expression and finally realized the surprise he had promised me before I returned to the country. So this was what he meant.I couldn't help but smile and lightly pinch Lucas's cheek. Then, I pulled out the acquisition documents and turned my cold gaze toward Grayson. "Sign."Lucas's voice carried a quiet threat. "You can choose—be acquired, or face liquidation. Your call.""Why?" Grayson slammed the contract aside, his face a mix of anger and wounded pride. "Do we have no courtesy left at all?"I let out a long sigh, relieved that I no longer had to pretend.

On the day of the engagement, Grayson had invited hundreds of media outlets—both to create hype and to prove the strength of Caldwell Group to potential investors.During the ceremony, he wore a façade of deep affection, endlessly narrating to reporters how perfect our love was. I stood beside him, expressionless. Then, when he played the photos from his "proposal day," his face went pale.Because the content on the screen wasn't our romantic moments at all—it was a record of Grayson and Tanya's relationship: irrefutable proof of his affair. There were photos of them celebrating holidays together, screenshots of their sweet chats, even some intimate pictures far beyond innocent.I took the microphone from him, wiped away imaginary tears for the cameras, and said, "Actually, Grayson had already been unfaithful three years ago!"He tricked me on New Year's Eve, promising to propose, but stood me up and stayed with his mistress all along! From that day forward, we were already over.
