Chapter 5

Autor: Leaves
"Wait!" James blurted out. "I need to see Eleanor—no, Elizabeth! Please, let me see her!"

I was listening from the other end and shook my head at the lawyer.

"Ms. Vance doesn't wish to see you," the lawyer said. "But she asked me to pass along a message. You two make a lovely couple. She wishes you both the best."

The call ended. James's hand fell to his side. Then he slowly sank onto the dock as the cold sea wind whipped across his face.

Six years ago, while lying in his arms one night, I told

I slowly stood and looked at James, who was trembling by the door."Eleanor..." he begged, his voice weak. "I know I was wrong. I swear I'll never bother you again."I ignored him and turned to my father. "I'm sorry you had to watch that."My father simply nodded. "Well done, sweetheart. That's how a Vance should handle things."I turned back to James. "My name is Elizabeth. Though I doubt you'll ever have another chance to say it.""I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Elizabeth! I understand now! I know who you really are—""Know what?" I cut him off. "That I'm the Vance heiress? That I'm the woman who stayed by your side for six years before you threw her away? Or that you slapped someone you never should've touched? You weren't nearly this polite yesterday when you hit me."I walked toward James with the dagger in my hand. The closer I got, the more he trembled in fear. "I'm begging you. Let me go. I'll give you a finger! No, two! Take two!"I looked at the hand he'd used to slap me. "Not enough.

The following night, the succession ceremony went ahead as planned in the estate's grand hall. The hall could hold several hundred people, but fewer than a hundred had been invited. Everyone there was either a core member or a trusted longtime ally.My father sat at the head of the hall, commanding the room without saying a word. I wore the red dress my mother had left me, with Grandpa's heirloom necklace around my neck. Calmly, I walked toward him.I stopped in front of him, knelt on one knee, placed a hand over my chest, and bowed my head. "Father.""From today, the future of this Family is in your hands. Are you ready?""I'm ready."My father nodded and faced the room. "Everyone, I asked you here today to witness the transfer of power. I, Antonio Vance, formally hand control of this Family to my daughter, Elizabeth Vance. If anyone objects, speak now."The room fell silent.Everyone knew I had given up my inheritance six years ago for a man. But now that I was standing before them,

I'll tell you on our wedding day."Now that day would never come.Vance Estate, the Peninsula. Our estate overlooked the sea, with green hills rising behind it. My family had called it home for generations. I stood on the roof terrace, looking out at the coastline. The mark on my cheek had already faded.Noah came over with a glass of champagne. "What are you thinking about?""How stupid I was." I smiled. "Six years of giving him everything

James stared at the photo on his screen, his hands shaking. In the photo, I was wearing the latest white couture mermaid gown. Around my neck was the last necklace a famous designer had created before retiring. A single stone from it was worth more than James could ever afford."Elizabeth..." he muttered, his mind going blank. He grabbed the friend beside him, who still had no idea what was happening. "What's the name of the Vance princess?"His friend shrugged. "Mina... You got engaged to her yesterday, didn't you? Are you still drunk?"James shoved the screen in his friend's face. "Not Mina! This is the real Vance princess! The Don's daughter!" His voice cracked as he shouted. His friend stared at him in shock. "I think... her name's Elizabeth. But no one's ever seen her. I heard she's been sick and recovering overseas for years."James went dizzy, and everything around him seemed to spin.He thought back to when we'd first met six years ago at the fast-food restaurant where I worked

I packed a suitcase, if only to make my departure feel real. I had just reached the door when I opened it and was hit by the smell of alcohol."What is she doing here?" James, Mina, and several of their friends stood outside.James was slightly unsteady. His expression stiffened when he saw me. "She's the doormat. She comes over to clean when she has nothing better to do."He knew his friends were coming, so he'd replaced every photo of us with pictures of him and Mina. "She's got thick skin! I'll give her that."James quickly played along. "How many times have I told you not to come here? Don't come back again. Got it?""Got it." I tightened my grip on the suitcase, walked past them and left the house.I had just reached Noah when he took the suitcase from me. Then my phone rang. It was James."There. Once everything settles down, we'll get a bigger place," he said, as if nothing had happened."James, you don't understand. I'm not coming back.""What's that supposed to mean?""We're d

I took a cab back to the hotel and called my father."Hey, sweetheart. Did you have a good time at the party?"The moment I heard Dad's voice, I nearly broke down. I'd given up my inheritance and an arranged marriage for James. After six years together, he repaid me by slapping me in front of everyone to protect Mina."What's wrong? Why are you crying?"I couldn't answer. Everything I'd been holding back surged to the surface. Then I stopped myself. If Dad found out what James had done, he'd tear him apart. "It's nothing. I just found the scene very moving."We talked for another minute before hanging up. Then James called. "Where are you?""The hotel.""I already told you it was just for show, and you had to turn it into a scene."I was too exhausted to argue. "You still think this is my fault?""Do you have any idea what you just did? You nearly set the Don off. If he finds out you put your hands on his daughter, you're dead. Do you understand that?" There it was again. He always act
