Chapter 1

The call disconnected before I could remind Cassian Blackwell who I was.

Seraphina Valemont. His future wife. The woman who had returned from the border to unite two of Aurelia’s most powerful houses.

I had never expected love from a political marriage, but I had intended to enter it in good faith. I had assumed Cassian would at least offer me basic respect.

Apparently, even that was too much to expect.

I lowered my phone and stared at the dark screen.

Impressive.

My own fiancé did not even have my number saved.

Beside me, Juliette Ashford burst out laughing. The Blackwell protection crest pinned to her jacket shifted as she crossed her arms. Cassian had personally given it to her, allowing her to invoke his family’s authority.

“Oh, this is embarrassing,” she said. “I have no idea how you got Cassian’s private number, but you didn’t actually think he would defend you just because you called, did you?”

People liked to make the phrase *childhood friend* sound innocent. Among royal families and old-money dynasties, it rarely was.

Still, I would not condemn Cassian over another woman’s arrogance alone. I was willing to hear his explanation.

But if he had knowingly allowed Juliette to use his name this way, perhaps the engagement had been a mistake from the beginning.

Juliette’s gaze traveled over my coat, shoes, and shirt.

“Honestly, the maids at Blackwell Estate dress better than you do. What gave you the confidence to compete with me?”

During my years at the border, whether a coat kept out the cold mattered far more than the label inside it.

“I don’t need designer labels to prove my worth,” I said. “Usually, the people who depend on them most are the ones with the least underneath.”

My gaze dropped to the Blackwell crest on her chest.

“And if Cassian willingly protects women like you, perhaps his judgment is not as impressive as I was led to believe.”

Her expression stiffened.

She had ruined whatever pleasure I might have taken in choosing something for the engagement ceremony, so I selected another pink diamond necklace and handed it to the sales associate.

“I’ll take this one. Please wrap it.”

The associate did not move. His nervous gaze shifted between Juliette and me.

“I’m sorry, miss, but this boutique gives priority to members of the nobility and anyone under the protection of a ruling house.”

Juliette tapped the crest.

“Do you understand now? Cassian gave me this himself. Everyone in Northmere knows what it means.”

She stepped closer.

“What exactly do you have?”

I held her gaze without answering.

I did not announce my title or threaten her with the Crown. Years at the border had taught me that real authority rarely needed to shout.

The boutique fell unnaturally quiet. Juliette’s smile faltered, and she took half a step back before catching herself.

“What?” she snapped. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

I turned to the associate.

“I said wrap it. I’m paying.”

His hands began to tremble.

“Please,” he whispered. “I can’t afford to offend Duke Blackwell.”

Murmurs spread through the boutique.

“That’s Juliette Ashford.”

“The duke gave her his personal protection crest.”

“I heard he once had a man expelled from Northmere just for insulting her.”

“This woman should stop before she gets herself arrested.”

The associate swallowed and pushed the necklace back toward me.

“Whatever family you come from, this is Northmere. Duke Blackwell’s word is law here.”

The crowd’s fear restored Juliette’s confidence. Her red heels clicked against the marble as she approached.

“That’s right. This is Cassian’s territory. Your name and money mean nothing here.”

She stopped directly in front of me.

“I’m actually very generous. Kneel, apologize for challenging me, and admit in front of everyone that you had no right to touch something I wanted.”

Her smile sharpened.

“Do that, and I might let you leave Northmere with what little dignity you have left.”

I looked at the Blackwell crest on her chest.

Every threat Juliette made while wearing it was backed by Cassian’s authority.

I had returned from the border prepared to honor our engagement. Yet before I had even met my future husband, his name was already being used to force me to my knees.

For the first time, I wondered whether the Duke of Northmere deserved to stand beside me at all.

The council hall was filled with their uneven sobbing. I set down my teacup. The soft sound of porcelain against mahogany was enough to make both stop.“I have one question,” I said. “If my brother had not arrived that day, would either of you have spared me?”Juliette opened her mouth, then closed it again. Cassian kept his head lowered.I looked at Juliette. “You wanted very badly to become a duchess, didn’t you?”She froze, then nodded. Then I turned to Cassian.“And you humiliated your own fiancée in public for her. You let her slap me and pour ice water over my head. You must care for her very much.”Cassian jerked his head up.“No. I didn’t. She was the one who…”“It does not matter now. Since the two of you are so devoted to each other, I will grant your wish.”Hope flashed across Juliette’s face before she understood what I meant.“The ducal title of Northmere will be taken from you. From this day forward, you are no longer Duke of Northmere.”Cassian went white.“You can’t…”“

The council hall was silent when Cassian and Juliette were brought in.Adrian sat at the head of the long table. Walter Blackwell stood near the wall, expressionless, though his fingers hung pale and tense at his sides. Two royal guards pushed open the doors and dragged Cassian and Juliette inside. For a moment, I almost did not recognize them.Cassian’s cheekbone was bruised, dried blood marked the corner of his mouth, and his once-perfect suit was badly wrinkled. Juliette looked even worse. Water stains covered her dress, her lipstick had smeared to her chin, and she looked nothing like the woman who had stood in the jewelry store with a Blackwell crest on her chest. The guards dropped them in the center of the hall and stepped back.Walter finally moved. He looked at Cassian once, and pain flashed across his face before disappearing completely. Then he strode over, grabbed Cassian by the back of the neck, and forced him down.“Apologize,” Walter said.Cassian did not move. After the two family heads left, the council hall returned to silence.I had just opened my book again when another guard came in.“Your Highness. The sales associate from the jewelry boutique is outside. He says he has come to beg forgiveness and refuses to leave unless he sees the Princess.”I paused, then remembered him.Adrian glanced at me with a faint smile.“Let him in. I would like to hear this confession.”The man nearly collapsed the moment he entered. He dropped to his knees, crawled several steps forward, and bowed so low his forehead almost touched the floor.“Princess,” he sobbed. “Please spare me.”He pulled a cloth pouch from inside his coat with shaking hands. The cord slipped loose, and several stacks of cash fell onto the floor.“This is everything I saved over eight years. Please take it. Please forgive me.”I looked down at him.A week ago, he had taken the necklace box from my hands and bowed to Juliette. Now he was on the floor, crying like a child.Adrian said n

A week later, I returned to Northmere.I had spent five days at the sanatorium and another two at the palace before Adrian allowed me to appear in public again. He had not returned to the capital. Instead, he had taken temporary control of the Blackwell council hall and stationed royal guards throughout the estate, turning it into the center of power for the region.By then, everyone in Aurelia had heard that the Duke of Northmere had been taken away by the Crown Prince himself, and that even the old duke had not dared to say a single hard word over the phone. Everyone was waiting to see what Adrian would do next. That afternoon, I sat by the window with a book in my hand. Sunlight fell across the page, but the memory of ice water pouring over my head still surfaced now and then, sharp and unpleasant.A royal guard entered and stopped before us.“Your Highness,” he said to Adrian before turning to me. “The heads of the Lancaster and Montclair families request an audience.”Adrian sat a

Adrian stood there quietly for a long moment. I knew that expression well. When he was truly angry, he never shouted. He became frighteningly calm instead.I walked over and caught his sleeve lightly. “Adrian.”He looked down at me, and some of the coldness in his eyes slowly faded. Then he touched my damp hair gently.“It’s fine,” he said calmly. After that, he turned back toward Cassian and lifted one hand. The royal guards moved immediately. Two of them dragged Cassian upright and locked his arms behind his back while another two hauled Juliette to her feet. She was still soaked through and shaking so badly she could barely stand.“Take them away,” Adrian said. “Separate cells.”Cassian finally understood how serious the situation had become.“You can’t do this to me! I’m a Blackwell! My father will—”“Didn’t you hear your father?” Adrian interrupted without looking back. “He said I may handle you however I see fit.”Cassian went pale instantly. When the guards dragged him outside,

I was not a forgiving person. Everything Juliette had done that night, I remembered clearly.Adrian glanced at me once, and that was enough permission.“Go ahead,” he said. “Let them understand what happens when someone humiliates a Valemont.”The silver ice bucket still sat beside the counter. The moment I picked it up, Juliette started shaking.“What are you doing?” she stammered. “If you touch me, Cassian won’t—”I stopped in front of her, lifted the bucket over her head, and slowly tilted it.Ice water crashed over her hair and shoulders. She screamed immediately as melting ice slid through her curls, down her dress, and into her collar while the guards held her firmly in place. When the bucket was empty, I let it fall onto the floor.Juliette looked ruined. Her carefully styled curls clung to her face, mascara streaked down her cheeks, and her expensive dress was soaked through completely while water pooled beneath her knees.“You asked earlier what it felt like to have water pour

Over past years, nobody had ever spoken to me that way before. I laughed because the situation was genuinely absurd.“I’m sorry,” I said pleasantly, “what exactly did you want me to say?”Juliette rolled her eyes. “Do you also have hearing problems?”“I heard you perfectly well,” I replied with the

The moment Adrian walked in, my legs nearly gave out. I had been forcing myself to stay calm for too long, and the second I saw him, the tension finally broke. He crossed the store without a word and pulled me against his chest, one hand resting against the back of my head. His coat still carried th
