Chapter 7 — The Breaking Point

The bedroom door closed quite hard as Mike walked out, his steps long and fast as if he wanted to get away from something he had almost done. His chest rose and fell, his breathing not yet fully steady. The veins on his neck were visibly tense, his jaw clenched, while the image of Elara’s face kept replaying in his mind.

“Crazy…” he muttered softly as he rubbed his face roughly. “What is actually happening to me…”

He kept walking until he reached the back terrace

The glow of the corridor lights on the upper floor of Laurent Group gradually dimmed as the night wore on. Mike's footsteps, which had originally been headed back to his office, came to an abrupt halt in front of a quiet hallway near the archive room. A shrill voice that sounded all too familiar drifted faintly through a slightly ajar wooden door. It was Vania's voice. However, there was none of the coquettish tone or fake tears she usually showed in front of him. Her voice sounded cold, demanding, and filled with panic.Mike held his breath, moving silently as he pressed himself against the partition wall."I know! Do you think I'm not stressed, huh?!" Vania snapped at the person on the other end of the phone. Her footsteps echoed as she paced back and forth restlessly inside the empty room. "That bitch has been gone for two months, but Mike still hasn't signed the divorce papers! I still haven't managed to become Mrs. Laurent, damn it!"Mike narrowed his sharp eyes. His jaw slowly t

The yellow taxi's wheels screeched softly as it came to a stop right in front of the arrival lobby of John F. Kennedy International Airport. After spending two long months buried in the cold atmosphere of operating rooms in Beijing, China, Elara had finally set foot back in her home country. The warm tropical air immediately greeted her skin as she stepped out through the large glass doors of the arrivals terminal.Elara was dressed in straight-cut jeans paired with a sand-colored casual blazer. Her long hair, which she usually wore loose, was now tied up in a simple bun, revealing her slender neck and radiating the aura of an independent career woman. Beside her, Aric walked while pushing a trolley loaded with several large suitcases belonging to the two of them."How does it feel to be back in the hustle and bustle of this city, Dr. Elara?" Aric asked, glancing at his friend with a warm smile.Elara paused for a moment, taking a deep breath of the outside air before slowly exhaling.

Three days had passed like a slowly unfolding hell for Mike Laurent. The study that had once been the most peaceful place for him had now turned into a chamber of relentless self-interrogation. On top of the sturdy mahogany desk, the dark blue leather folder still lay in the exact same spot, not shifted by even a millimeter since he had brought it back from the mansion. The two divorce papers inside remained pristine, untouched by his signature.Mike leaned back in his executive chair, staring blankly at the screen of his new phone. There were no notifications, no reports from his men regarding Elara's whereabouts. The woman had truly vanished as though swallowed by the earth, severing every connection and trail until not a single clue remained.Knock! Knock! Knock! The office door was knocked on impatiently before it swung open, revealing Vania stepping inside in her newest designer dress. Her beautiful face was twisted into a sour expression, and her eyes immediately landed on the b

The night grew deeper, yet the atmosphere inside the master bedroom of the Laurent mansion became increasingly suffocating, as though every ounce of oxygen had been drained from the room.Mike was still kneeling on the cold marble floor. His trembling fingers fumbled back into the pocket of his suit jacket and grabbed the phone he had carelessly set aside earlier.Breathing heavily like a wounded wolf, he dialed Elara's number. He pressed the phone tightly against his ear, so firmly that the screen dug into his cheek."The number you have dialed is currently unavailable or out of service...""Damn it! Pick up, Elara! I know you're just trying to scare me!" Mike roared, his voice hoarse and trembling as it shattered the silence of the night. He ended the call and dialed again.Twice.Three times.Five times.More than ten times.Yet the same female operator's voice continued answering him in a flat, emotionless tone. Every time he heard it, Mike's heartbeat felt as though it were being

Large spotlights illuminated the studio stage where Laurent Group's newest clothing line was being showcased. In front of the camera lenses, Vania twirled gracefully, displaying a premium silk gown with a forced professional smile. Every now and then, she deliberately cast flirtatious glances toward the corner of the room, where Mike stood tall, overseeing the photoshoot. However, Mike's attention was not on Vania at all. He kept checking his watch, ignoring the briefing sheet handed to him by the creative director standing beside him. His thoughts were trapped hundreds of miles away, in a master bedroom that suddenly felt impossibly distant."Okay, that's a wrap for today! Great job, everyone!" the photographer shouted at around four in the afternoon. The moment the instruction echoed through the studio, Mike immediately turned around."Pack up all the documents. We're heading back to the capital now," Mike ordered, his voice deep and cold, leaving no room for argument.Vania, who ha

The sun had just fully risen, casting golden rays of light through the glass windows of the Presidential Suite. Yet the beauty of the morning did nothing to dispel the dense fog clouding Mike's mind. The man stood silently beside the bed, still wearing last night's shirt, now visibly wrinkled in several places. For what felt like the tenth time within the past hour, Mike pressed his phone to his ear. His thumb once again tapped the call button for the same number—the number that had haunted his thoughts since dawn."The number you are trying to reach is currently unavailable or out of service...""Damn it! Why does your phone have to be off at a time like this, Elara?!" Mike cursed, his baritone voice rough as it shattered the silence of the room with restrained anger. He yanked the phone away from his ear and glared at the blinking screen. His jaw clenched so tightly that the veins along his neck stood out. The uneasiness that had crept into him since last night had now transformed i

The hospital corridor had already grown quiet as the clock crept toward four in the morning. She closed her eyes briefly and stretched her legs, which had gon
