Chapter 6

Author: Cutie Kitty
Laura could barely hide the smugness in her eyes, even as she put on a fragile, wounded look.

"Cindy, if I'd known you were this upset, I never would've taken your proposal or the project. And I definitely wouldn't have taken your head designer position. Why don't I give it all back?

"You have so much experience. You should stay and keep things running. Maybe I'm the one who should quit. I should just leave—"

I cut her off before she could finish and gave her a friendly smile. "Don't be silly. You're so talented. The company can't possibly do without you."

Sebastian's face darkened as he glared at me, his eyes blazing with anger. "Cindy, are you done making a scene? Don't forget, you're not getting any younger, and you're nowhere near as capable as you used to be.

"Without me, who do you think would even hire you? What kind of decent job could you possibly get now?"

Realizing he'd gone too far, Sebastian softened his tone. "If you apologize to Laura, I'll let you work as her assistant and stay involved with the project."

I laughed in disbelief.

So that was the deal. I'd do all the work, and Laura would get all the credit. Not a chance.

I looked at Sebastian coldly. "No thanks. Just sign the resignation letter."

The company was about to go under, and I had no intention of getting dragged down with it. The sooner I left, the better.

When he realized I wasn't backing down, Sebastian gritted his teeth, signed the letter, and tossed it back to me.

I took it without hesitation. Then, ignoring the furious look on his face, I added, "Oh, and one more thing. We're done."

For a moment, Sebastian looked stunned.

"What? You're breaking up with me?"

Laura gave a smug smile, but she still pretended to play peacemaker. "Cindy, are you still upset about what happened at the business dinner? You've got it all wrong.

"There's nothing going on between Sebastian and me, so please don't read too much into it. And don't let me cause trouble between you two."

Her words only fueled Sebastian's anger. He clenched his fists and growled through gritted teeth, "Cindy, are you done yet? Don't test my patience!"

I smiled and pushed him toward Laura.

"You two obviously want each other. If I kept standing in your way, I'd be the unreasonable one. And Sebastian, this breakup isn't up for discussion. I'm telling you it's over."

Sebastian gave me a cold look, a vein throbbing at his temple. "Fine. Have it your way. Just don't regret it!"

Just then, one of the coworkers nearby got a phone call. When it ended, he turned to Sebastian excitedly.

"Mr. Lambert, our business partners were very impressed with the design proposal. They're willing to invest another five million dollars to fund the project."

Laura smiled at the news and looked at me smugly. "Cindy, you were way too impulsive. You just quit, and they're already investing more money. At this rate, Sebastian's company will be leading the industry in no time. The future's looking pretty bright."

Sebastian raised an eyebrow at me, a mocking look in his eyes. "Regretting it now? Too late."

I scoffed. "We'll see who ends up regretting this."

"Keep acting like you don't care. Come on, everyone. Let's go celebrate!"

Sebastian and the others walked off looking pleased with themselves. They even started humming as they left.

I watched them go with a smile, then pulled out my phone and called Mom and Dad.

"Mom, Dad, pull all our investments and cut all business ties with Lambert Group."

With that, I got into my luxury car without looking back and drove off.Just looking at a jerk like Sebastian made me sick. After that, he started harassing me nonstop, desperate to win me back. He waited outside my house for me and brought me lunches. Then he showed up at my company, arranged roses into a giant heart on the ground, and released balloons with my name written all over them."Cindy, I know I was wrong. Give me one more chance. Can we please get back together?"I was completely fed up. I called the police and reported him for causing a disturbance and disrupting our work. The officers came and escorted him out.Even with the police there, Sebastian still refused to give up. "Cindy, don't make me leave. I really love you. I—""Sebastian, don't make me hate you."My words seemed to hit Sebastian hard. His eyes dulled, and his face went blank. He finally turned and left, looking completely defeated. As he went, he kept muttering, "Cindy, don't hate me. I'll go. I'll

Laura seemed to realize Sebastian was going down, so she finally dropped the act.She sneered, "Oh, please. You only have yourself to blame. What makes you think you're any better? You had a girlfriend and still hit on me, and all this time you were living off her money."If I'd known that from the start, I never would've given you the time of day!"Sebastian lost his temper and slapped her again. That set her off too. She swiped at his face, leaving bloody scratches across his skin. The two of them started fighting right there until security forcibly threw them out. After that, my company thrived thanks to the deal I landed with Mr. Cooper.Lambert Group, on the other hand, went downhill fast. Brands started canceling their contracts, and before long, the company declared bankruptcy.Business partners showed up demanding damages, while creditors came after him every day with knives, demanding their money back.Day after day, Sebastian was hounded by creditors and business part

I couldn't believe Sebastian was still defending Laura after everything that had happened.I had to give them that. Maybe it really was true love after all.I scoffed, pulled out my phone, and opened the background report I'd had done on Laura."If either of us is just a pretty face, it's your precious Laura. I had her investigated. That prestigious design school you keep bragging about? There's no record of her ever attending. Her credentials are completely fake."And that's not all. While she was overseas, she repeatedly took out loans in other people's names. Some of them ended up buried in so much debt that they jumped to their deaths."She fled back here because she was afraid of going to prison. So tell me, what company would want to work with a designer like her?"Everyone stared at Laura like she was something they'd scraped off their shoe. Her face burned red with embarrassment, and she looked like she wanted the ground to swallow her whole. Even then, she stubbornly re

Sebastian and Laura didn't believe a word I said and kept mocking me."You earned it? Cindy, I know exactly what you're capable of.""Exactly. Cindy, you did what you did, so just admit it. Everyone makes mistakes. What matters is owning up to them and doing better."Laura was as fake as ever. She acted like she was only looking out for me, but every word made it sound more and more like I really had pulled strings to land the deal. With Sebastian and Laura spreading rumors, the crowd quickly started whispering too. The looks they gave me turned openly scornful."There has to be something shady going on. How else could she have landed this deal?""Exactly. She looks like the type who uses men to get what she wants!""She earned it? More like she knows how to cozy up to executives and keep them happy!"Mr. Cooper finally had enough. He stepped forward and told everyone exactly who I was."Show some respect. She's the heiress to Reese Group! People practically beg for the chance

Watching Sebastian and Laura play off each other like that was a huge turnoff.I glanced at them and said coldly, "Sebastian, get over yourself. I'm here to talk business."Laura let out a mocking laugh. "Cindy, if you're going to lie, at least come up with something believable. What kind of deal could that little company of yours possibly get?"Besides, this deal is really important to Sebastian. I know you're mad, but you don't have to come here and deliberately ruin it for him. He stayed up three nights straight working on this."After Laura finished twisting everything around, Sebastian's expression turned furious. His fists clenched at his sides."Cindy, what happened to you? I haven't seen you in a while, and now you've turned into someone who lies too? It's disgusting!"Then he called security over. "Security! Get her out of here, and stop letting just anyone walk in. She's ruining the whole place just by being here! What a buzzkill."Security grabbed me by the arms and s

With the funding gap covered, Sebastian was smug again. He didn't seem to care about the 30 million dollars and wired it to me without hesitation."Here. The company's only going to keep growing anyway. Consider it a handout."I knew he was trying to humiliate me, but I took the money anyway. He owed me every cent. I had nothing to feel guilty about.Sebastian swaggered out, looking thoroughly pleased with himself. But after he left, something about the money didn't sit right with me.How had Laura managed to come up with that much cash so quickly?I hired a private investigator to look into it, and the answer caught me completely off guard. Laura had taken out loans in Sebastian's name to cover the company's funding gap.I quietly saved all the evidence and smirked.Sebastian had no idea he was already buried in debt. He thought a fortune was waiting for him. Instead, he was headed straight for ruin.Over the next few days, Lambert Group seemed to be thriving again now that it
