Chapter 3

مؤلف: Frostveil
I sent Declan a text ending our engagement.

At two in the morning, I was still packing my bags.

Over the years, I had built this house piece by piece into a real home. My attachments to it ran deep.

Just as I was debating whether to take a small keepsake, a message from Declan finally came through.

He completely ignored my breakup text.

“Viv, did you make it home?

“I’m not coming back tonight. Don’t wait up, go to sleep early, and make sure you lock the door.”

I didn’t reply.

If he truly cared about my safety, seven full hours had passed since we went our separate ways. Seven hours... What had he been doing all that time?

The answer was painfully obvious.

Two hours ago, Brielle had posted an update on social media.

“My prince promised he’ll protect me forever.”

The photo showed two hands intertwined. In the background, the rumpled hotel bed sheets made it clear what had just taken place.

A familiar suffocating feeling rushed over me, far worse than when Declan had choked me earlier.

I always felt that posting intimate moments on social media lacked class. But she did it specifically for me to see—to flaunt that Declan had abandoned me and chosen her.

There were times in the past when I doubted whether Declan truly loved me. He never said the words out loud, and he understood very little about me.

Until one New Year’s Eve, when I had severe abdominal pain. It was a holiday night, and barely anyone was out on the streets. Unable to flag down a cab, he carried me on his back for miles, sprinting all the way to the emergency room.

When I woke up, Declan was sitting by my bedside, his eyes bloodshot from staying up all night.

The moment he saw me open my eyes, tears fell down his face as he gripped my hand tightly. “Vivian, please don’t ever leave me.”

The nurse nearby teased softly, “You have no idea how worried your fiancé was. He cried the entire night.”

That was the moment I felt certain he loved me.

When he was poisoned in the ER, I had my doubts. But now, I didn’t believe a word of it anymore.

Brielle got what she wanted.

In the comment section, her and Declan’s mutual friends showered them with congratulations.

Sabrina was especially vocal.

“Now that his true love is back, that trash, Vivian, better know her place and back off,” she said.

She was right about one thing: I was leaving.

So I hit the “Like” button on the post and left a comment of my own: “Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness together. Stay together forever, and may you have eight kids.”

The moment I left the comment, Declan’s messages flooded in like a storm.

I didn’t read a single one. Then came call after call.

Irritated by the noise, I muted my phone and tossed it aside. I didn’t even notice that my phone eventually died from the relentless influx of incoming calls.

Half an hour later, I finished zipping up my suitcase.

Just as I stood up to leave, Declan walked through the front door.

He glanced at my suitcase, his brows drawing into a tight frown. “Vivian, how long are you going to keep throwing this tantrum?”

A classic line straight out of a cheater’s playbook.

“Trash belongs with trash. You two deserve each other.”

I pulled off my engagement ring, tossed it straight into the trash can, gripped my suitcase handle, and walked toward the door.

Behind me, he spat through gritted teeth, “Vivian, mark my words—you’ll regret walking away from me!”

After Declan left that day, he still refused to give up.He stayed in this small coastal town, showing up at my bakery every single day with a bouquet in hand. He would order a table full of pastries and sit there from opening until closing time.It was a real headache.Caleb wanted to go drive him away, but I waved him off. We might as well treat it as extra revenue for the shop. This routine went on for half a month, until suddenly, not a single customer walked into the shop for days in a row.One morning, while I was getting breakfast ready, Caleb called from the living room, “Viv, come take a look at this.”I stepped out of the kitchen and shot him a playful glare. The brat hadn’t called me “Viv” once since that day.The ticket printer at the counter was spitting out orders non-stop. The receipt paper had already trailed onto the floor a meter long, and it was still spooling out continuously.Five minutes later, it finally jammed.I picked it up to read it—every single ord

I opened a bakery in a small coastal town.Life moved at a leisurely pace here, so I usually ran the shop from ten in the morning until four in the afternoon.Gradually, business picked up to the point where I couldn’t handle it all alone, so I decided to hire an assistant. When I first opened the shop, Caleb Vance used to love sitting in my bakery, working on his sketches.Over time, we naturally grew familiar with each other.Later, I learned he was having a tough time finding employment.Coincidentally, I was looking to hire, so we clicked instantly.Like me, Caleb also suffered from hearing loss.He was a bit luckier than I was, though—his left ear had normal hearing. On this day, while I was busy in the kitchen, Caleb called out to tell me that a customer outside specifically wanted to see me.I offered a quick hum of agreement and laid down my spatula. In the past, there had been plenty of customers who asked to meet the baker. It was nothing unusual, but I never expe

Only I knew that a shattered mirror could never be made whole again.Beneath the deceptively calm surface, a far more violent storm was brewing.Because of my hospital stay, our wedding was postponed by three months.Declan began scouring everywhere for wedding ideas. He brought them to me one by one, presenting them with eager excitement.“Babe, what if we do a beach wedding? We could skydive right down into the venue and give all the guests the absolute shock of their lives!”He spoke with glowing enthusiasm, as if he were genuinely looking forward to marrying me.Back when we were planning the original wedding, every single detail had been left entirely for me to handle alone.Whenever I asked for his input, he would simply say whatever I decided was fine, as long as I liked it.Or, more often than not: “I’m busy, Vivian. Stop bothering me with trivial matters like this.”Now, watching his excited demeanor, I gave him all the emotional validation he wanted. For every sing

When I woke up again, I was in a hospital room.Declan was sitting by my bedside. Seeing me open my eyes, his rims actually turned red with tears.I reached down and touched my flat lower stomach. It felt as though something had once been there. While unconscious, I had seen a little girl in a dream. In a crisp, sweet voice, she called me “Mommy,” her soft little hand gently caressing my cheek.“Mommy, I have to go now.”I couldn’t see her clearly, but she seemed to look a bit like me, and a bit like Declan.Right now, Declan had dark circles under his eyes and dark stubble covering his jaw.He looked nothing like his usual immaculate, perfectly groomed self.Seeing me touch my lower abdomen repeatedly, he sat down and pulled me tightly into his arms.“Vivian... we’ll have other children in the future.”A single tear slipped unconsciously from the corner of my eye.It felt like the last trace left in this world by that unfulfilled child.I didn’t say a word. I didn’t know

Brielle was also present at the gala dinner that night. She was currently serving as Declan’s personal assistant, so her appearance here was hardly a surprise.Tonight, she wore a champagne-gold evening gown. When she caught sight of me, she deliberately tilted her chin up, accentuating her neckline.I saw it.The ruby necklace resting against her collarbone.Declan had bought it at an auction just a few days ago for an astronomical price. The final hammer price had far exceeded its actual value, and the headlines were buzzing with rumors that Declan Whitmore was sparing no expense just to win a smile from his fiancé.I gave a small, polite nod, then silently mouthed three words: “You’re not worthy.”Her face flushed with fury, and she stamped her heel in frustration, but she couldn’t afford to throw a scene. The most influential figures in the city were gathered in this very room tonight.Everyone was desperate to score a connection with Harrison Sinclair. She didn’t dare r

That evening, I claimed I wasn’t feeling well and wanted to turn in early. After the housekeeper brought me a glass of milk, I told the staff not to wake me until tomorrow afternoon. Before going to sleep, I did something unprecedented—I called Declan. After whispering a few sweet, affectionate words into the phone, I confirmed that he was indeed away on his business trip.Only then did I finally ease my mind.Once I made sure everyone in the household was asleep, I stepped out of my room and crept downstairs in the pitch-dark.This time, I took nothing with me, making movement much easier.Yesterday, I had already booked a flight ticket to another city.I had arranged for a car in advance, and it was currently waiting for me at the back garden gate.I walked cautiously, not making a single sound.Passing through the fence of the back garden, I saw the car parked right there. The overwhelming thrill of escaping sent a surge of excitement through me.Almost there.
