He Rigged the Vows, I Chose His Uncle
Penulis: Cher

Chapter 1

Penulis: Cher
I'd spent years waiting to marry my mafia fiancé, Daniele Moretti, but he kept stalling.

And just as we were about to exchange the marriage alliance contract, he replaced his own name with his uncle's, Samuele Moretti.

"Have you lost your mind?"

Marco Ferraro's voice blasted from one of the rooms of the private club.

He stared at the tampered marriage alliance contract in Daniele's hands, eyes wide. "What's Regina going to do when she finds out? She's waited five years for you!"

Daniele let out a low, contemptuous laugh and knocked back his whiskey. The alcohol turned his eyes sharper, almost reckless.

He waved a hand, signaling the lawyer to keep editing the document. "She won't notice. And even if she does, so what?"

"But—"

Daniele cut him off, a smug spark flickering in his eyes. "Zitto! I lost the bet, so I'm paying up and keeping my promise to Sofia. It's just a little trick."

He pointed at the altered section of the marriage contract, where Daniele Moretti had been swapped for Samuele Moretti.

The lawyer finished the edits, his hands shaking, and passed the document back to Daniele. The wax seal went on again, clean and perfect, hiding every trace of what they'd done.

Daniele smirked viciously. "By the time Regina realizes something's off, the wedding will already be over. Besides, I've dragged this out long enough. She won't care."

Sofia Ricci peeked out from behind him and slid a hand over his shoulder. Her voice was syrupy as she said, "Daniele, are you really sure?"

He caught her hand and brushed a light kiss across her knuckles. "Of course. Regina worships me. Without me, she's nothing."

The others in the private room started hooting.

"What if she actually ends up marrying Samuele?" someone joked.

Daniele burst out laughing. "Even if she ends up marrying my useless uncle, that failing heart of his could give out any day. When he goes, Regina will only have me left.

"Sterlini Group's fortune and everything under Uncle Samuele's name will end up mine."

"Like killing two birds with one stone!"

"Daniele, you're a genius!"

"Regina's a loyal idiot," Daniele added. "She's obsessed with me. She'll go along with it. No question. It's settled. Nothing's going to go wrong. Everything's lining up perfectly."

The private room roared with laughter.

I stood in the shadows outside the door, every word landing hard in my chest.

Five years. I'd waited for him for five whole years.

I turned down every suitor and bit back all the snide gossip in Novarisse's high society because I believed he'd marry me.

Every time we got close to sealing the marriage alliance contract, Daniele found another excuse to stall.

At first, people wondered why we hadn't rushed the wedding. As the delay dragged on, I turned into a punchline for the upper class.

Eventually, even the families that used to want an alliance stopped looking my way, because everyone knew Daniele and I already had a marriage contract.

From 21 to 26, I spent the best years of my life waiting on him. And now, he treated me like a bargaining chip.

I looked down at the bottle of whiskey in my hands, the one that cost 100 thousand dollars. I'd bought it to celebrate the end of his bachelor party.

It was one of the rarest bottles in the world, a rarity even powerful families struggled to obtain. It took me three months to win it at an auction.

Looking at it now, I felt like nothing but a joke.

I turned and walked to the end of the hallway, then poured the entire bottle into a potted plant.

I found myself thinking back to the boy Daniele used to be. Whatever warmth he'd once had for me was long gone.

When I fell into the frozen lake at 12, he'd been the one who jumped in after me, dragging me out and fighting to wake me up.

People never understood why I waited so many years. I just didn't want to throw away a love that had once been real.

The amber liquid soaked into the soil, disappearing just as my love for him had. The scent of whiskey hung in the air, a mocking reminder of my stupidity.

When I got home, I sat in the study and waited in silence. Sure enough, less than an hour passed before I heard Mamma calling from the stairs.

"Regina!"

She was holding a document, her face drained of color. She stormed in and slammed the marriage contract onto the desk, the one bearing the Morettis' wax seal.

"What is this supposed to mean? Why is the groom listed as Samuele Moretti?"

I stared at the altered name and felt a cold, hollow laugh rise in my chest.

Daniele thought I'd be too blind to notice the change, that I'd still beg him to finish the wedding, that I'd show up one day crying and ask him to switch it back.

But he was wrong.

I picked up the pen on the desk and signed my name at the bottom of the document.

My voice stayed steady, perfectly calm. "Va bene, Mamma. We'll go through with this."

"I thought the whole point was making Mr. Daniele regret losing you," Lisa said. She watched me with quiet curiosity while I sewed new clothes for the baby growing inside me. I was already three months along.I smiled and shook my head. "His regret doesn't do anything for me. A man who could treat me the way he did isn't going to change just because he regrets it.""Then what do you want?" Lisa asked, sounding lost.My needle slipped through the fabric, trailing a line of silver thread."I want him to feel every humiliation I ever swallowed. I want to be the one who ruins everything he was proud of."Sunlight fell across my face, gentle and warm.Ever since Daniele was exiled, the Moretti family had regained its old standing. Samuele had officially stepped back into his role as underboss, and his health was improving quickly. The other major families started reaching out to us again, and business was better than ever. And I, as part of the Moretti family, held a kind of power a

Don Castellano exploded over the phone, yelling, "Daniele is throwing a ceremony for some bar hostess he wants to make his comare. Do the Morettis have no pride?"I sat in my office, sipping my coffee like nothing was burning down, listening as one family after another pulled their deals.Another call came in. "Mrs. Moretti, we need to rethink our partnership. Daniele's behavior is unacceptable."Within three days, all five major families in Novarisse backed out of their agreements with the Morettis. Business at the docks stalled, protection money dried up, and even the casino's revenue started to slide.I had leaked the news about Daniele's ceremony with Sofia on purpose, just to ensure he became a punchline in both high society and the mafia circles.Lisa stepped in to report. "Mrs. Moretti, Donna Moretti would like to see you."I set down my coffee, smoothed my clothes, and headed out.Donna Moretti sat in the living room, clutching a telegram, her face set and furious. On our wedding night, I sat on the edge of the bed, meeting Samuele's eyes. "Are the rumors true?"He set down his glass, a teasing smile tugging at his lips. His voice dropped, warm and magnetic. "What do you want to know? My heart condition or my abilities?"I crossed the room toward him. "Everything. I'm your wife now."Samuele stood and closed the distance between us, every step steady, showing not even a trace of weakness. He unbuttoned his shirt, revealing a rough scar across his chest."My heart was injured, yes. But nothing like the rumors make it sound."I reached out and traced the scar, feeling the strong, even rhythm under my fingertips. He wrapped his hand around mine. "As for my other abilities… Do you want to test them yourself?"…The next morning, the doorbell yanked me out of sleep.Lisa rushed over with a report. "Mrs. Moretti, Ms. Ricci is kneeling at the door. She says she has something urgent to tell you."I slipped into a silk robe and made my way to th

Daniele clutched his swollen cheek, staring at me in disbelief. His left cheek was already puffing up, the shape of my hand standing out clear as day.I fixed him with a cold stare. "You don't get to talk that way about my husband."I hadn't raised my voice, but every word hit him hard.My tone dropped even colder. "What do you think the Sterlinis are? You really believe we'd sign a marriage contract without running the most basic background and medical checks?"Silence hit the room all at once. The Sterlinis were one of the biggest names in real estate. There was no world where we wouldn't have vetted the groom's health."Our medical team ran a full examination on Mr. Samuele," I said.It was a lie, of course, but no one dared question it.Daniele tried to speak, desperation scraping his voice. "Regina…"I cut him off. "Zitto! You don't get to speak here."Right then, Sofia stumbled into the church. She was crying so hard her makeup had smeared, and she threw herself straigh

The church fell into a dead hush. Even the birds outside went quiet, as if the whole world held its breath, waiting to see what would happen next.Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows, so bright it pricked at everyone's eyes.Donna Moretti finally lost her temper. She slowly pushed herself to her feet, fury written across her immaculately kept face.As the Moretti matriarch, she'd sat through more power plays than she could count, but she never imagined her own grandson would pull something this low.She snapped at the guards, "Basta! Get this lunatic out of my sight!"Two towering guards in black moved in at once, quick and efficient.Daniele fought back with everything he had, but the alcohol dulled his reflexes. "No! You can't do this to me. I'm the underboss of the Morettis. Lay a hand on me and you're finished!"Donna Moretti snorted, realizing just how spoiled Daniele had become. "Underboss? A lunatic who caused a scene at a sacred wedding has no right to ta

The makeup artist clipped on the last pearl earring and asked, "Ms. Sterlini, are you ready?"I looked at my reflection in the mirror, taking in the ivory wedding dress and the diamond headpiece set in my hair. When I rose, the skirt fell in a soft sweep. "I'm ready."It was my wedding day, but the groom wasn't Daniele. It was Samuele.A line of black luxury cars waited outside. Through the window, I spotted Samuele coming to pick me up himself. He stepped out of the limo. His face was still pale, but he looked tall and sharp in his suit, a white rose pinned to his lapel. He took my hand, his grip steady, treating me with a quiet kind of respect.Samuele held my hand. "You look beautiful, more than any bride I've ever seen."I slid in beside him and murmured, "Grazie."The line of limos pulled away toward the church.
