Chapter 1

"Get in that car. I dare you!"

Lucas's eyes were bloodshot, and he lunged toward the flashy red sports car parked outside the gate like a wild animal gone mad.

I shoved his reaching hand aside without hesitation and slid into the passenger seat.

The window rolled down slowly.

Cold wind flooded the car, scattering the nauseating smell of bone broth that clung to Lucas.

"Brenna, have you lost your mind?" He gripped the edge of the window so hard his knuckles turned white.

That face, always so arrogant, always above everyone else, was now twisted with disbelief and panic.

"I get up at five every morning to buy you the best ingredients. I burned every last thing that belonged to Mara. I even got on my knees and begged!"

His voice was raw, his eyes webbed with red veins.

"What more do you want from me? You won't be satisfied until I'm dead, is that it?"

Looking at this self-serving display of devotion, I found it utterly absurd.

"Lucas, do you really think cooking me a few meals should move me to tears?"

I leaned back against the leather seat, my voice so calm it surprised even me. "When I was on the operating table bleeding out, where were you?"

Lucas's entire body went rigid. His lips began to tremble violently.

I continued, "Thirty-seven calls. You didn't pick up a single one. And when you finally did, you told me the die landed on six, that Mara had a flat tire and she was scared, that she needed you more."

I stared straight into his eyes, tearing away that mask of false remorse, word by word.

"No... Brenna, I didn't know it was that serious..." Lucas shook his head frantically, tears splashing onto the car window.

"You didn't know?" I let out a cold laugh and pulled the brass die he'd used for three years out of my pocket.

It hit him square on the bridge of his nose with a sharp crack, then bounced to the ground at his feet. The face pointing up was a glaring six.

"Three years with a loaded die, and it came up six every single time. Pretty handy, wasn't it?" I looked at him with ice in my eyes as his world crumbled. "You made me sick for three years. Now it's your turn."

I pointed at the number on the ground. "Even numbers go to Elliot. Your rule. Own it."

"I don't accept this! What kind of bullshit rule is that!"

Lucas lost it completely. He clawed at the car door handle like a madman. "Get out of this car! You're Mrs. Grant. How can you run off with some boy toy from a nightclub!"

A hand with long, defined fingers reached past me and settled on the steering wheel.

Elliot leaned forward slightly, his strikingly handsome face appearing at the window. "Mr. Grant, watch your mouth."

A devilish grin played at the corner of his lips, but his eyes were cold as ice.

"Brenna's the one paying my bills now. Keep screaming like that and you'll scare her."

"Who the hell do you think you are! You think you can take my wife!" Lucas jabbed a finger at Elliot's face, spitting curses.

Elliot didn't spare his tantrum a single glance. He turned to me instead, his voice melting into something sweet and sticky.

"Brenna, it's so loud out here. Let's go. I already warmed up the hotel bed for us."

Those words sank into Lucas like a poisoned barb, hitting him right where it hurt most.

His eyes went crimson. He raised his fist, ready to smash the window.

"Drive." I stared straight ahead, done talking.

The engine let out a roar like a beast unleashed.

The sports car shot forward like an arrow.

In the rearview mirror, Lucas stumbled after us for two steps before crashing to his knees on the frozen, snow-covered ground.

The first thing I did after returning home was meet Lucas to finalize the divorce. He looked like he'd aged a decade in three months.Gaunt and hollow, with sunken eyes and a scruffy beard. Nothing left of the polished, confident man he used to be.Without a word, he handed me a newly drafted divorce agreement."Brenna, I'll walk away with nothing. Every share, every property under my name, it's all yours."His eyes were red, his voice as small as it could get."All I'm asking is... could you let me see you once in a while?"I didn't even glance at the agreement. I slid it right back."Lucas, stop with the martyr act."I looked at him the way I'd look at a complete stranger. No connection, no feeling."I'll take every cent I'm entitled to, not a penny less. As for seeing each other again, don't count on it."The moment the divorce was finalized, I walked out without a shred of reluctance and headed straight for the Maybach parked at the curb.Elliot stood by the car door, smiling, his

Three months later, I was in a quiet little town in Sweden.Fine snow drifted from the sky.I pushed open the glass door of a coffee shop, a hot Americano in hand, heading for the gallery on the corner.A tall figure stepped out from nowhere and pinned me against a red brick wall.A familiar cool scent mingled with the crisp after-snow air."Brenna, you're fast. You had me searching everywhere."Elliot stood in a long black coat, a thin layer of snow dusting his shoulders. His eyes were rimmed with red, and his voice carried a trace of undisguised hurt.I looked at this heir to a dynasty, a world apart from me in status, with connections that reached everywhere, and instinct made me want to pull back. For three months, I had cut every tie on purpose, determined not to get dragged back into the tangled mess of wealthy families."I think you have the wrong person, Mr. Moretti."I let my face go cold, my voice devoid of warmth. "We settled our accounts. Excuse me."I turned to leave, but

Elliot pulled a manila envelope from the inside pocket of his suit jacket and slapped it across Mara's face. The envelope burst open. A thick stack of photographs and bank transfer records scattered across the floor."Brenna's miscarriage three months into her pregnancy wasn't an accident!"Elliot's voice cut like a blade of ice. Every word landed on Lucas's nerves like a hammer blow."Take a good look. These are the transfer records showing you paid off the nanny to slip high-dose miscarriage pills into Brenna's prenatal medication."And this one is a surveillance screenshot of you sneaking to the staircase landing in the middle of the night to smear the steps with lubricant!"All of this, just so you could have Lucas to yourself and take Brenna's place."Lucas staggered toward the pile of evidence as if he'd been struck by lightning. With shaking hands, he picked up the photographs and records. When he saw what was on them, a sound tore from his throat. Raw, inhuman, agonized."Mara!

"You're too kind, Mr. Moretti. Just following your orders."Bruce remained on his knees, groveling with a sycophantic grin like a dog wagging its tail.Elliot let out a derisive scoff, his gaze drifting over the ashen-faced crowd behind Bruce. It came to rest on Mara, who sat crumpled on the floor, still reeling in disbelief."What's the matter, Mara? Surprised?"Elliot adjusted his cuffs with unhurried ease, every word dripping with undisguised contempt."A few weeks back, some old fools in my circle tried to set me up with a woman Lucas didn't want anymore."With each word, another shade of color drained from Mara's face."I don't do secondhand, so I had someone look into your background."Turns out you're a real piece of work. Stringing Lucas along like a puppet with one hand, clawing your way into bigger money with the other."Elliot's laugh was quiet, yet it raised the hair on the back of every neck in the room."I love a good show. So to flush you out, I had my driver Bruce put o

The lead bodyguard's baton was inches from smashing into Elliot's skull.Elliot made no move to defend himself. He simply lifted his chin. His gaze, cold as a grave, cut through the crowd and locked onto the quaking middle-aged man by the head table."Bruce, is this how you train your dogs?!"The words weren't loud, but they cracked through the hall like a bolt of thunder. What happened next made everyone's skin crawl."AHHH!"Bruce let out a shriek that could curdle blood. He shoved Mara aside and scrambled through the crowd on all fours. In his panic, he tripped over his own feet and hit the polished marble floor hard. But dignity was the last thing on his mind. He half-crawled, half-slid on his knees until he was right in front of Elliot.Thud!Bruce slammed his forehead against the floor, his voice shaking beyond recognition."M-Mr. Moretti! Please, sir, have mercy!"I swear I didn't know she was yours! You could put a gun to my head and I still wouldn't dare!"He kowtowed frantica

That roar tore through the hall like a thunderclap, and the air seemed to drain from the room.Every head turned toward the doorway.Elliot strode in against the light.Today he wore a perfectly tailored black suit, nothing like the languid, flirtatious man from the hotel room.In his place was the commanding presence of a man born to power, the kind that made people's blood run cold. His expression was carved from stone, and his gaze swept over the two bodyguards holding me down like the edge of a blade. One look. That was all it took. The two trained brutes actually let go of me and stepped back.I shook free and rubbed my aching shoulders as he walked to my side."What are you doing here?" I asked under my breath."Here to take you home." He positioned himself between me and the room, his voice gentle, but his eyes remained locked on the head table. When Mara got a clear look at who it was, she blinked in surprise, then burst into shrill laughter."Oh, it's just her little boy toy!"
