Chapter 3

Author: Madam Fenghuo
My father still hadn't let go of the idea of canceling the wedding.

He looked at me with such pain in his eyes that he couldn't get a single word out.

But my mother said Mia could still make it in time. A short delay wouldn't matter. The priest had already gone over the revised schedule with everyone.

Now all we had to do was wait for Mia to arrive. Once she finished my hair and makeup, I could head straight into the church. My assistant brought over my wedding gown and helped me put it on first.

Meanwhile, the backup stylist started treating my hair.

Everyone pulled themselves together except my father. He stood off to one side in silence, his eyes red as he turned away.

Seeing him like that broke my heart.

Growing up, he had never once raised his voice at me. Even when I accidentally broke the family signet cuff links he treasured, he had only smiled and asked if I'd hurt myself.

I had always been free to walk into his office and flip through confidential files that even his right-hand man wasn't allowed to touch.

No one in my family had ever let me suffer the slightest grievance. No outsider was allowed to say a single bad word about me. But today...

Because I hadn't asked him to step in, all my father could do was stand there and watch.

He had to watch me suffer at Dillon's hands.

He remained by the doorway without saying a word while the bridal suite buzzed with frantic activity. Everything was ready. We were only waiting for Mia.

Then Dillon called.

My assistant's eyes lit up. "They must be here, open the door.

"I'll go check."

A cheer rippled through the bridal suite.

The priest wiped the sweat from his forehead and urged me, "Answer it, Ms. Monica. He must be calling to apologize."

After a brief hesitation, I picked up.

Dillon's voice was gentle. "Monica, I'm sorry."

The apology loosened the knot in my chest. The hurt and anger I'd been holding onto began to melt away.

I was about to answer. Then he kept talking.

"Even if I sent Mia over now, she won't have enough time to finish your makeup. So I think she should do Mrs. Garcia first.

"If Beth and her mom look their best today, it reflects well on all of us. Don't worry—I already sent Beth's former stylist to you. She'll be there soon. She did Beth's gala look before, and it turned out beautifully. I'll meet you at the church."

My head buzzed. The blood drained from my face, and I nearly collapsed. The bridal suite fell silent. Everyone turned to stare at me.

My mother grabbed my arm, furious enough to snatch the phone away.

I moved out of my mother's reach, steadied my voice, and asked, "Do you truly want me to be your wife?"

Dillon laughed. "Of course I do. That's why I'm fixing the problem. I found you another stylist. If I weren't serious about marrying you, I wouldn't have gone to all this trouble.

"Stop making this into a bigger issue than it is. We'll talk after the wedding."

A bitter laugh escaped me. By now, this wasn't about a makeup artist anymore. Dillon had considered everyone else's wishes and, as always, put mine last.

"Dillon... don't regret this."

My voice was firm.

For a split second, he fell silent.

In the ten years we'd been together, I'd never spoken to him like that. Not once. He knew exactly what kind of person I was. He knew I meant every word.

But then he must have convinced himself that we'd come too far to turn back. There was no way I'd let the wedding end in disaster.

"Alright, it's settled. Stop making a scene and holding everyone up. I'll be there soon."

He hung up on me again.

Just like that, he made the decision for me.

My mind went blank. A loud ringing filled my ears until I could barely process anything he'd said.

My father was beside himself with rage. No one in the bridal suite dared to speak. Only my mother rubbed the back of my hand, trying to comfort me.

"Monica, it's okay. No one gets to treat you this way. Whatever you decide, we'll stand behind you."

My father looked utterly disappointed in Dillon. He couldn't bear to see me suffer. "Whatever you choose, we are on your side."

The videographer urged, "According to the schedule, we need to leave for the church now. All the guests have arrived."

I wiped away my tears. Even my wrists were trembling.

"Go ahead and do my makeup." I lifted my chin. "I'm done putting up with this."

Everyone exchanged uneasy glances. Then the backup stylist my mother had hired stepped forward and resumed working on my hair.

Canceling the wedding also ended the alliance between the Greene and Garrity families. We withdrew every resource we had given them.At home, Zara raged that we'd gone too far.She even came to my father's office in person, accompanied by her second-in-command, hoping to change his mind.In my father's office, she ranted, "This is just a disagreement between two young people. Why drag both families into it?"You're the Don of the Greene family. Are you really taking a lovers' quarrel this seriously? Are you really willing to jeopardize two families over a canceled wedding? Isn't that a little childish?"My father didn't even look up. "I think you've misunderstood something."I gave your family access to our arms supply network. I also let you use our healthcare business to launder your money."I did it because my daughter loved your son. She doesn't love him anymore, so I have no reason to keep supporting your family.""Fine, that's true. But ending the partnership will hurt your famil

The whispers throughout the church grew louder by the second.Zara tried to defend herself, stumbling over her words, but there was no talking over the crowd.I picked up the microphone again. "This is why I'm canceling the wedding. Thank you all for coming today. I'm sorry your trip was for nothing."I set the microphone down. My father walked over and rested a reassuring hand on my shoulder."You did the right thing," he said with a proud smile. "Leave the rest to me. Go home and get some rest."I nodded and smiled back. The wedding was over, and a crushing weight lifted from my chest. My mother took my arm and led me out. We had to pass right by Dillon.I didn't spare him a single glance. He called my name. "Monica."His voice cracked. Once, that alone would have made me turn around and forgive him.But not today. Dillon and I were over. Completely.I learned later that Dillon stood there watching me leave, his eyes turning redder by the second. He opened his mouth, but no words cam

Dillon's expression changed instantly. Desperate to save his pride, he forced a smile. "Monica... aren't you going to walk down the aisle with me?"I know the decorations were a little over the top before, but maybe this simpler look is better. Without all the flowers, the church actually looks nice."Let's just get through the ceremony."He cautiously reached for my arm.I turned and shot him a cold look. His hand immediately fell away, left hanging awkwardly at his side.I stood at the end of the aisle and looked at my father. He stepped forward and said, "That was the plan, but you took away her makeup artist.""We hired that artist. We paid to fly her here because we wanted our daughter to have the wedding she deserved. What gave you the right to take her away? You ignored Monica's feelings. You've humiliated my daughter again and again. And you still think you deserve to marry her?"Zara cut in, "This is between Dillon and Monica. We shouldn't interfere. Besides, I already explain

I looked at Beth in silence, my gaze sharp enough to make her flinch. She instinctively stepped back. After collecting herself, tears streamed down her face. She turned toward Dillon's mother before looking back at me."This is all my fault. If it weren't for me..."She lowered her head and repeated the same line. "Monica, if you're upset, you can hit me..."I slapped her across the face. The crack rang out sharp and clean."Fine," I said. "You told me to."Beth froze. One hand flew to her burning cheek. When she finally looked at me, she let out a piercing scream. She had never imagined I would actually slap her in front of everyone."But I'm not done yet," I said.Dillon exploded and yanked Beth behind him. "What the hell are you doing! Why would you hit her? None of this is Beth's fault!"What kind of scene are you making? Do you have any idea what today is? Do you even realize—"I slapped Dillon across the face."No, I don't!"My voice cracked like thunder. Dillon stared at me in s

My father already knew what I was about to do. "All right," he said. "I'll go speak to the priest. Leave everything to me. I'll explain it to the guests."His words gave me a sense of safety. No matter what happened, he would always catch me when I fell.My mother called Mia. "If they still won't let you come, just stay where you are. Stick to our agreement. Unless we give the word, you don't need to do anyone else's hair or makeup."The videographer kept the camera rolling as the bridal suite came back to life. While everyone rushed around me, Dillon called several times. I ignored every one of them. I slipped out of my wedding gown, changed into a simple dress, and made myself presentable.I looked at my reflection. Light makeup. A neat, understated hairstyle.
