Chapter 4

Autor: June Summers
A kind passerby took me to a small clinic on the outskirts of the city.

The elderly doctor cut open my pant leg and sucked in a sharp breath.

The wound from my amputation was horribly infected, with torn flesh and exposed tissue.

“Miss, the infection is far too severe. You need to be transferred to a major hospital immediately. I can’t treat this here!”

But my bank accounts had been frozen, and I didn’t have a single penny on me.

With trembling hands, I placed the small cross my mother had left me on the table.

“Doctor... I don’t have any money left. Please take this as collateral. I don’t want to be transferred.

“Please, just give me some antibiotics first. Help me bring down the fever.”

The television in the clinic was broadcasting breaking news.

Isla was lying in a hospital bed at the city hospital with an oxygen tube under her nose, crying to the cameras.

“I just wanted to spend my final days in peace.

“But my best friend cruelly destroyed my last wish.”

The footage then cut to Adrian, dressed in his white coat, openly making a statement.

“As a doctor, I will never tolerate such reprehensible behavior.

“I will fully cooperate with the police in investigating the severe emotional and physical abuse Natalie inflicted on a terminally ill patient.”

The host then abruptly interrupted with another piece of breaking news.

It was a statement Caleb had posted in the family group chat.

“Effective immediately, Natalie Whitaker is officially removed from the family registry! Even if she dies out there, she brought it upon herself. No one is allowed to help her!”

I leaned against the wall.

I watched the older brother who had once kissed my face and promised to protect me for the rest of my life.

Despair burned my heart to ashes.

I borrowed the clinic’s landline and called the medical records department at the city hospital.

A staff member’s cold voice came through the receiver.

“I’m sorry. Your request for your medical records was denied by your attending physician, Adrian Cole.”

The phone slipped from my hand.

At that moment, the elderly doctor walked out holding the test results he had rushed through.

His brows were tightly furrowed.

“Miss, you have a severe infection, but you also have late-stage cancer. However, there’s no record of any cancer treatment in the system.”

I suddenly looked up.

The elderly doctor turned the diagnostic system screen toward me.

It showed that my follow-up appointment for my cancer treatment had already been canceled.

The note read:

[Family member signed on the patient’s behalf. Patient refused treatment.]

The employee ID of the person who made the change belonged to Adrian.

No wonder my condition had gotten so much worse without the hospital ever notifying me.

Adrian had known about my terminal illness all along.

He was the one who truly wanted me dead.

That night, the infection in my amputated limb spread, triggering sepsis.

During the final ten minutes before I lost consciousness, I sent an email containing all the evidence I had gathered to Jenna.

After that, I grabbed the elderly doctor by the sleeve and pointed to the small cross I had left as collateral on the table.

“If I die... please make sure you send this cross to Jenna.”

A faint green light flickered from the base of the cross.

After saying those final words, I collapsed onto the metal-framed bed and breathed my last.

Meanwhile, Adrian was sitting in a bridal shop in the city center, accompanying Isla as she tried on wedding dresses.

His phone rang.

Seeing the familiar number, he answered impatiently.

“Natalie, what are you trying to pull this time? I’m warning you—”

“Mr. Cole.”

The elderly doctor’s voice on the other end was cold.

“This is a clinic on the outskirts of the city. Your wife, Natalie Whitaker, has died from sepsis caused by a severe infection in her wound.

“Please come and claim her body.”

Adrian suddenly went rigid.

Just then, a nurse from the city hospital hurriedly arrived at the bridal shop by taxi and handed him a document that had been laminated again.

“Dr. Cole! The diagnostic report that Ms. Mercer brought with her—the stains along the edges have been cleaned off!”

Adrian lowered his head.

Clearly printed on the late-stage cancer diagnosis were three words:

Natalie Whitaker.

One year later. The Natalie Whitaker Patient Assistance Fund officially began operating. Its first donation was carefully allocated to help a financially struggling patient who had suffered severe injuries in a car accident obtain a second medical consultation across state lines. The foundation held no lavish ceremony. On its clean, simple website, there were no lengthy emotional appeals and no photographs exploiting anyone’s suffering. At the very center was a single, powerful statement in black:“No patient’s name should ever be hidden beneath a stain.”…Inside the prison, Caleb spent his days working in the sewing workshop. At night, he curled up in the corner of the shared cell.Carefully, he held a tiny cross he had made from folded paper. There was no scripture inside the paper figure.Tears streamed down Caleb’s face. But he would never hear his sister’s weak voice again.“It hurts.”He finally understood that he would never see the girl who had once looked at hi

You treat human lives like they mean nothing!”The once-powerful Dr. Cole could only cover his face and flee like a rat.Caleb’s downfall came even faster. After seeing the trending news, the company’s biggest business partner immediately sent a termination notice. The financing deal Caleb had spent months negotiating officially collapsed.Furious investors arrived with debt collectors and blocked the company’s headquarters.“Pay us back now!”At that moment, Caleb’s most trusted financial executive finally tu

Although Isla Mercer had been arrested, the public backlash showed no signs of stopping. The agency representing Isla was fighting desperately to save her reputation.Overnight, they created a series of anonymous accounts and released a maliciously edited video. The footage showed clips of Natalie Whitaker smashing and throwing things while she was still alive. The caption claimed:“Natalie Whitaker suffered from severe paranoia for years. All the evidence was fabricated by her lawyer in an attempt to extort the hospital!”Mindless fans flooded the internet with posts defending Isla, preparing to help her launch a counterattack.Just as they were gaining momentum, Natalie’s social media account, which had already gone inactive, suddenly came back to life.A two-and-a-half-minute audio recording was posted. There was no title, only a close-up photograph of the bloodstained base of a cross. The recording began with Caleb’s cold voice.“He’s the only attending physician. Three days later.A medical malpractice review hearing was jointly convened by the city health department and the court. The atmosphere in the conference room was tense. The panel of medical experts laid out the emergency room surveillance footage, surgical schedules, and the records of the medication changes made in the hospital system one by one.Adrian clenched his jaw, sweat pouring down his face as he desperately tried to defend himself.“I made a professional judgment at the time! Natalie Whitaker’s leg couldn’t be saved. I never deliberately tried to harm her!”The head of the panel gave him a cold look before pressing the intercom beside him.The rear door of the conference room opened.Dr. Marcus Hayes, the head of vascular surgery at General Hospital, strode in and slapped a canceled consultation request onto the table in front of Adrian.“Bullshit!“The emergency department submitted a request for a limb-saving consultation immediately after the crash!”“Three min

The door to the morgue at the outskirts clinic was kicked open.Adrian came stumbling in, still wearing his suit.A drawer in the morgue was pulled open.A body covered with a white sheet lay on the stainless-steel table.Adrian’s hands trembled violently as he lifted the sheet. The amputated limb at the base of my right leg was hastily wrapped in gauze, and a pungent stench filled the air.My face was already deathly pale and sunken, and I could no longer respond to him.The elderly doctor slammed the copied system logs against Adrian’s chest. The papers scattered across the floor.“Open your eyes and look at them yourself!“You signed off on a high-level amputation, so why is there no record of a vascular surgery consultation?“According to the emergency department timeline, you treated that woman with the minor injury first, wasting the critical thirty minutes we had to save her leg!”Adrian stared at the logs. His legs gave out, and he collapsed heavily onto his knees.
