Chapter 2

작가: Hare
That night, Shane never came home. He didn't return until the next evening, showing up with Amelia in tow. He walked straight in as if he owned the place.

Shane held two shopping bags and said with a smile, "Rachel, Amelia said she wants to thank us. She insisted on cooking for us herself."

Bruises were still visible on Amelia's face. "Rachel, I'm really grateful Shane helped me call the police yesterday. There's nothing I can do for him, so I thought I'd cook for him to show my gratitude."

With that, Amelia walked in as if she owned the place and headed straight into the kitchen.

Without thinking, Shane followed her. "Let me help you, just like I used to."

Amelia turned back, feigning annoyance. "You should just wait in the living room. Whenever you offer to help, you just get in the way."

However, Shane refused to leave the kitchen, lingering around shamelessly. "I can help wash the vegetables.

"Surely I can handle that, right? Come on. It's been seven years. I've got to have improved by now."

Amelia said with a smile, "Fine. Help me tie my hair up. It's in the way."

He did as he was told and helped her tie up her long hair. I could only force myself not to notice how close they were.

Not long after, Amelia came out with the food. "Dinner's ready, Rachel."

I barely tasted a thing during dinner, but Shane was all smiles. "Amelia, your cooking's just as good as before. It's been ages since I had it."

Amelia added more ribs to his plate. "I know you like my baby back ribs best, so I made them just for you. Try these. They're meatier."

Finally, Amelia noticed me. "Rachel, why aren't you eating? Is the food not to your liking?"

Shane looked up at me, and his voice was commanding. "Rachel, you should at least eat something. Amelia has spent all afternoon cooking this dinner."

I was about to say something when the doorbell rang. I opened the door and found two workers standing outside, holding a large cardboard box.

"Good evening. Your wedding photos have arrived."

I froze. Shane and I had taken those wedding photos last month. When we ordered the photos, he kept going over the delivery date again and again. He insisted he would feel better if they arrived the day after his 30th birthday.

Back then, I assumed Shane just liked a sense of occasion, but he had only asked for that because of his promise to Amelia.

After hearing what the workers said, Amelia's expression shifted. She dropped the glass she was holding, and it shattered on the floor, scattering shards everywhere. "Ah!"

Shane immediately shot up from the dining table and bent down to steady her arm. "Don't move. You'll step on the shards."

The workers were still asking, "Where should we hang these wedding photos?"

Shane didn't even bother looking up. "Hang them wherever you like. Rachel, could you just sign for the delivery?"

Shane then picked Amelia up bridal-style and carried her to the couch.

The two workers looked at me, clearly feeling awkward. "Miss…"

I stared at the cardboard box holding our wedding photos, and my eyes suddenly stung.

We had been so happy on the day those photos were taken, smiling in each other's arms.

I turned back, only to see Shane carefully disinfecting Amelia's wound. He then lifted her ankle and carefully placed a bandage over it.

So, Shane's indifference toward those photos was just so he could focus more on another woman.

I took a deep breath, forcing down the bitterness. "No need to hang them up. Just leave them in the box."

I did not respond. My gaze fell to my hand holding the phone. I glanced at the diamond ring on my finger.Just then, I received a text from an unfamiliar number. "Rachel, it's me, Shane. Can you come out and see me? I'm downstairs at your place." I walked to the window and looked down. Shane stood beneath the street lamp, holding a bouquet of red roses and looking up at my window. I put on my coat before heading downstairs. When Shane saw me step outside, his eyes lit up instantly. He strode over quickly and handed me the flowers. "Rachel, you're finally willing to see me."I didn't accept the flowers, but he didn't seem to mind and went on talking. "Amelia's issue has been fully resolved. "She's already divorced and moved to another city. She won't come looking for me again. I already made it clear to her that we should go our own separate ways."Shane looked at me. His eyes were filled with hope. "Rachel, nothing's holding me back now. I can finally be with you. Let's st

I said nothing. Shane's eyes turned red, and tears suddenly started streaming down his face. "Seven years, Rachel. We've been together for seven years, and you're going on a blind date just like that? How could… How could you just move on…"I stared at his tears, but they stirred nothing within me. "Shane, what are you crying for? You should be happy. "Amelia has nowhere else to go. It's the perfect time for you to take care of her. Haven't you always wanted to be her hero? No one's standing in your way now."Shane was practically roaring. "I don't want to be some hero! I want you! Rachel, I choose you. You've always been my choice!"However, I went around him and kept walking. …My blind date's name was Jasper Baker. He was the definition of a finance guy. When we were hitting it off, I said with a smile, "Back in college, I minored in finance for a while, but I dropped it because it was too hard. The only thing I remember is the term 'sunk cost.'"Jasper chuckled. "The

The living room fell silent. No one uttered a word. I lowered my gaze to check the time on my phone before turning to leave the living room. I took a dress I had already ironed out of the wardrobe and put it on.When I stepped out, Shane was still standing in the middle of the living room. Seeing that I had changed, he instinctively stepped forward and grabbed my wrist. "Where are you going?"I looked down at his hand, but didn't move it away. I merely calmly said, "I'm going on a blind date."Teresa looked up instantly. Her face was still wet with tears. "Rachel… What did you just say? You… How could you…"Shane froze. I took advantage of his distraction, pulled my hand free, and turned to walk out of the door. By the time I reached downstairs, Shane had already caught up to me. He blocked my way, staring at me with reddened eyes. "Who are you going on a blind date with? Rachel, we're not even officially over yet. Now you're going on a blind date?"I looked up to meet his g

Shane's expression shifted. Dad took a deep breath. "I'll tell you what you should've done! The right thing to do was to call the police, reach out to a women's rights organization, and contact a lawyer. "You shouldn't have brought her into the home you share with Rachel! You should've protected Rachel's feelings, not pushed her into backing down until she can't even stand living in her own house!"Shane still tried to explain himself. "Mr. Towne, I…"Dad slapped Shane too, this time harder than Marcus had. The slap sent Shane staggering to the side. The living room was so quiet that it was unsettling.Mom walked past me and stopped in front of Shane. "Shane, I have a question for you."Shane looked up at her. Blood stained the corner of his lips.Mom continued, "Are you helping Amelia because she really needs help, or because you can't bear to let her go?"Shane froze. Mom smiled, but it was filled with sorrow. She felt sorry for me, not him."You've been with my daught

Still holding his phone, Shane suddenly looked up at me. I shrugged. "I sold my own house. Is there a problem?"Shane's face instantly flushed. After telling Amelia not to worry, he ended the call."Rachel, that was our home! How could you sell it?"I met Shane's gaze. "Shane, our engagement is already off. Since we're no longer together, I sold our home. That makes perfect sense, doesn't it? What do you think?"The evidence spoke for itself. Teresa could no longer make excuses for Shane. Marcus was livid. "Shane, explain yourself! Who was the woman on the phone? Why is she living in your and Rachel's house?"Teresa became anxious as well and tugged at Shane's clothes. "Shane, say something! What on earth did you do?"Marcus and Teresa kept interrogating Shane, but he gave no reply and turned to look at me instead. "Rachel, could you not sell the house for now? If you do, Amelia will have nowhere to go."Before I could even say a word, Marcus rushed forward and slapped Shane

I called Shane back, and he answered very quickly. "Rachel, what on earth are you up to? Your parents came to our engagement dinner and said they wanted to call off our engagement. Can you stop being so unreasonable?"My voice stayed perfectly calm. "Shane, I told you a month ago that I wanted to call off our engagement. You need to stop clinging to your one-sided feelings."I had to stop clinging to my one-sided feelings too.Shane clearly didn't accept that. "You say it's over, and that's it? We've been together for seven years. You think you can just…"I cut him off. "Enough. Shane, we were together for seven years, and for all seven of them, you were waiting for someone else. "You can't use those seven years as leverage. They were just a waste of my time. That's all I have to say. Don't call me again." With that, I ended the call. Not long after, my parents came home. They didn't even bring up canceling my engagement, and I knew it was because they didn't want to trigger me.
