Chapter 3

작가: Hare
When Amelia's husband was released from police custody, Shane only grew more uneasy.

Over the past few days, Shane had been distracted at work. He kept his phone in his hand, checking it every few minutes.

At night, he left his phone on the bedside table. The screen lit up and went dark every now and then, and it kept buzzing nonstop.

I rolled over, turning my back on him. "Shane, why didn't you put your phone on silent today?"

All these years, Shane always set his phone to silent before going to bed because being disturbed gave him headaches. He would even complain when my alarm went off.

Shane stayed silent for a few moments before saying, "I know it's noisy, but I can't put it on silent.

"That guy could go after Amelia at any time. If she calls, I'm afraid I'll miss it.

I turned over to look at Shane. "So, you're never going to put your phone on silent again?"

Shane merely said, "Let's talk about this once this is settled."

I finally couldn't take it anymore. "And what exactly does that mean? When Amelia gets a divorce? When she remarries? Or when her husband drops dead?"

Shane stared at me in disbelief. "Rachel Towne, can't you show a little compassion? That jerk is threatening Amelia every day, and she could be in danger at any moment.

"You want me to just leave her be at a time like this? If I put my phone on silent and miss her call, then what?"

I raised my voice too. "Can't she call 911? What about all those years before you reconnected? How did she manage to get on with life without you?

"Does it really have to be you? Amelia has family and friends. Why does it have to be you?"

Shane suddenly threw off the blankets and got out of bed, as though trying to put distance between us.

"Rachel, since when did you become this cruel? When I met you seven years ago, you'd even feel bad for a stray cat on the roadside. How did you end up like this?"

I was about to retort when Shane's phone rang. He immediately lunged for it and answered the call. "Amelia? What's wrong?"

Amelia's sobs came through the phone. "Shane… I don't dare go home. I didn't even bring any money with me.

"I don't know where else I can go. I don't know why, but I somehow ended up downstairs at your place. Could… Could I stay at your place for a while?"

Shane agreed without even thinking. "Of course. I'll come down and get you."

After he ended the call, I clung to him while he was getting dressed. "There's a hotel nearby. I'd be happy to pay for her room, but I don't want her staying in our home."

Shane looked up at me. "It's not safe at the hotel. What if her husband finds her there? The front desk can't hold him back.

"What if something happens? Who's going to take responsibility? Besides, Amelia needs someone with her in her current state.

"Staying with us is the safest option for her. With me around, she'll feel at ease."

As I listened to Shane speak so matter-of-factly about wanting to make another woman feel safe, I finally broke down.

"You're okay with having her here, but I'm not! Shane, I'm a woman too!"

Shane completely ignored how much it hurt me. His voice was cold. "I've already made up my mind. Stay out of this."

He grabbed his coat and headed for the door.

I called out to Shane with tears streaming down my face, "Shane, if you bring her into our home, I'll call off our engagement."

Shane froze for a moment before slowly turning to face me. We stood in silence, staring each other down for more than ten seconds.

Finally, Shane took a deep breath. "Rachel, you're the kindest person I know. You wouldn't just leave her to fend for herself."

With that, he picked up his keys from the table, turned, and walked out the door, leaving me alone in the suffocating silence and darkness.

A moment later, I wiped away my tears and called my real estate agent.

The agent sounded cheerful. "Rachel, is there something wrong with the house? I remember you bought it for you and your fiance to live in. Is your wedding coming up soon?"

I let out a bitter laugh. "There's nothing wrong with the house, but please help me put it on the market as soon as possible."

I refused to share the man I loved with another woman in my own home. At that point, I finally made up my mind. Tears were streaming down my face.

I didn't want the house or Shane anymore.

I did not respond. My gaze fell to my hand holding the phone. I glanced at the diamond ring on my finger.Just then, I received a text from an unfamiliar number. "Rachel, it's me, Shane. Can you come out and see me? I'm downstairs at your place." I walked to the window and looked down. Shane stood beneath the street lamp, holding a bouquet of red roses and looking up at my window. I put on my coat before heading downstairs. When Shane saw me step outside, his eyes lit up instantly. He strode over quickly and handed me the flowers. "Rachel, you're finally willing to see me."I didn't accept the flowers, but he didn't seem to mind and went on talking. "Amelia's issue has been fully resolved. "She's already divorced and moved to another city. She won't come looking for me again. I already made it clear to her that we should go our own separate ways."Shane looked at me. His eyes were filled with hope. "Rachel, nothing's holding me back now. I can finally be with you. Let's st

I said nothing. Shane's eyes turned red, and tears suddenly started streaming down his face. "Seven years, Rachel. We've been together for seven years, and you're going on a blind date just like that? How could… How could you just move on…"I stared at his tears, but they stirred nothing within me. "Shane, what are you crying for? You should be happy. "Amelia has nowhere else to go. It's the perfect time for you to take care of her. Haven't you always wanted to be her hero? No one's standing in your way now."Shane was practically roaring. "I don't want to be some hero! I want you! Rachel, I choose you. You've always been my choice!"However, I went around him and kept walking. …My blind date's name was Jasper Baker. He was the definition of a finance guy. When we were hitting it off, I said with a smile, "Back in college, I minored in finance for a while, but I dropped it because it was too hard. The only thing I remember is the term 'sunk cost.'"Jasper chuckled. "The

The living room fell silent. No one uttered a word. I lowered my gaze to check the time on my phone before turning to leave the living room. I took a dress I had already ironed out of the wardrobe and put it on.When I stepped out, Shane was still standing in the middle of the living room. Seeing that I had changed, he instinctively stepped forward and grabbed my wrist. "Where are you going?"I looked down at his hand, but didn't move it away. I merely calmly said, "I'm going on a blind date."Teresa looked up instantly. Her face was still wet with tears. "Rachel… What did you just say? You… How could you…"Shane froze. I took advantage of his distraction, pulled my hand free, and turned to walk out of the door. By the time I reached downstairs, Shane had already caught up to me. He blocked my way, staring at me with reddened eyes. "Who are you going on a blind date with? Rachel, we're not even officially over yet. Now you're going on a blind date?"I looked up to meet his g

Shane's expression shifted. Dad took a deep breath. "I'll tell you what you should've done! The right thing to do was to call the police, reach out to a women's rights organization, and contact a lawyer. "You shouldn't have brought her into the home you share with Rachel! You should've protected Rachel's feelings, not pushed her into backing down until she can't even stand living in her own house!"Shane still tried to explain himself. "Mr. Towne, I…"Dad slapped Shane too, this time harder than Marcus had. The slap sent Shane staggering to the side. The living room was so quiet that it was unsettling.Mom walked past me and stopped in front of Shane. "Shane, I have a question for you."Shane looked up at her. Blood stained the corner of his lips.Mom continued, "Are you helping Amelia because she really needs help, or because you can't bear to let her go?"Shane froze. Mom smiled, but it was filled with sorrow. She felt sorry for me, not him."You've been with my daught

Still holding his phone, Shane suddenly looked up at me. I shrugged. "I sold my own house. Is there a problem?"Shane's face instantly flushed. After telling Amelia not to worry, he ended the call."Rachel, that was our home! How could you sell it?"I met Shane's gaze. "Shane, our engagement is already off. Since we're no longer together, I sold our home. That makes perfect sense, doesn't it? What do you think?"The evidence spoke for itself. Teresa could no longer make excuses for Shane. Marcus was livid. "Shane, explain yourself! Who was the woman on the phone? Why is she living in your and Rachel's house?"Teresa became anxious as well and tugged at Shane's clothes. "Shane, say something! What on earth did you do?"Marcus and Teresa kept interrogating Shane, but he gave no reply and turned to look at me instead. "Rachel, could you not sell the house for now? If you do, Amelia will have nowhere to go."Before I could even say a word, Marcus rushed forward and slapped Shane

I called Shane back, and he answered very quickly. "Rachel, what on earth are you up to? Your parents came to our engagement dinner and said they wanted to call off our engagement. Can you stop being so unreasonable?"My voice stayed perfectly calm. "Shane, I told you a month ago that I wanted to call off our engagement. You need to stop clinging to your one-sided feelings."I had to stop clinging to my one-sided feelings too.Shane clearly didn't accept that. "You say it's over, and that's it? We've been together for seven years. You think you can just…"I cut him off. "Enough. Shane, we were together for seven years, and for all seven of them, you were waiting for someone else. "You can't use those seven years as leverage. They were just a waste of my time. That's all I have to say. Don't call me again." With that, I ended the call. Not long after, my parents came home. They didn't even bring up canceling my engagement, and I knew it was because they didn't want to trigger me.
