Chapter 3

Author: Lavender Dream
On the day I was discharged from the hospital, Avril appeared before me, full of life and energy.

Zack didn't even bother to hide the joy on his face and explained, "The hospital developed a new, highly effective treatment for leukemia. Avril is completely cured now."

I sneered inwardly but said nothing in response.

While Zack was away handling the discharge paperwork, Avril took the opportunity to provoke me. She tossed her phone into my hands.

When I looked at the screen, I saw hundreds of TikTok-style videos of a couple showing off their intimate relationship. The man in the videos was someone I knew very well.

It was none other than Zack, my husband.

The account had over a hundred thousand followers, and the comments beneath each video were filled with fans gushing over them.

"What a perfect match! I'm totally shipping this couple."

"I really hope my favorite internet couple stays together forever!"

"You've made me believe in love again."

Besides that, there were thousands of intimate photos in the phone gallery. They'd even recorded sex videos of themselves.

"Zack, why don't we record some videos? I'm dying anyway, and I just want to leave behind some beautiful memories to keep you company."

"Avril Holden! Don't ever say things like that again!" Zack chided her. "You aren't going to die. I'll find a way to save you. Just wait a little longer."

Visibly upset, he silenced her with a kiss. Suddenly, the video was filled with Avril's soft moans and Zack's low, guttural growls as their bodies became entwined with each other.

"Please, Zackie, won't you go easy on me today?"

His husky yet tender voice replied, "You're so beautiful, Avril."

My stomach churned violently. I flung her phone aside and bit down hard on my lower lip until I tasted blood.

My heart felt as if it were bleeding.

So every time Zack claimed he was working late, every night he didn't come home, it was all to be with Avril.

He had once promised he would love only me for the rest of his life, and that his wife would always be me. But looking back on it now, it all seemed so ridiculous to me.

Avril curled the corners of her lips and arched an eyebrow at me, saying, "Zack was always so completely, uninhibitedly satisfied in all the countless days and nights he spent with me.

"As for you—you aren't even fit to stand by his side."

My fingernails dug deep into my palms as I stared at her, unblinking.

"Have you no shame, Avril Holden? Seducing your own brother-in-law? Do Mom and Dad know you're playing the homewrecker?"

Avril shrugged and said, "Who's the homewrecker here when the both of you aren't even married anyway? So why are you calling him my brother-in-law?"

Her eyes brimmed with mockery as she cast a cold, derisive glance my way.

However, she was right.

Zack and I had been together for three years, yet we had never officially registered our marriage. He kept putting it off, promising he would hold a grand wedding for me only after I gave birth to his baby.

But now I realized he never intended to marry me from the very beginning.

Heartbroken and disillusioned, I booked a flight to Trevallia for three days later.

From this moment on, we would never see each other again.

Seeing Zack return, Avril immediately stepped forward to link her arm through his, cooing in a sugary, coquettish tone. "Zackie, haven't you told Ashley about the wedding yet?"

His smile turned stiff as he hurriedly explained, "Uh, Ashley, actually, there's something I need to tell you. The wedding I promised you—it's happening in three days.

"But your leg is injured, and it wouldn't look very good at the ceremony. Since Avril looks just like you, being your own sister and all, we've decided she'll take your place as the bride. Our parents have all agreed to it."

Avril giggled. "You should come and watch the wedding, Ashley. Otherwise, people might just say that I stole your spot!"

She still maintained her facade of kindness and gentleness, but I was the only one who knew the truth.

She simply intended to use the wedding day to declare her victory and assert her position as the winner, ensuring I could never hold my head high in public again.

Zack's hands hung limply at his sides. Suddenly, he looked up, his eyes gleaming as he said, "I know what to do now, Ashley. Just wait a little longer. Once I get everything back on track, you'll forgive me, won't you?"I looked at him and let out a silent sigh. But before I could even respond, he hurried off and disappeared.…The next time I saw Zack again was ten years later.I heard that, in an attempt to atone for his sins and win my forgiveness, he had ruthlessly locked Avril in the basement the moment he returned home from Trevallia. Then, he proceeded to cut the child from her womb forcibly. His expression twisted into something hideous and deranged as he sliced open her abdomen with his own hands.A manic, increasingly wild smile spread across his lips as he murmured, "Once the baby is cut out, my darling Ashley will surely forgive me. The child who died will forgive me too. Then, Ashley and I can be together forever.""No! Zack, stop!"But Avril's desperate, groveling

Nathan kept glancing toward the door every now and then. After hesitating for a long moment, he finally asked, "That man has been hanging around here for days, just watching you from outside. Do you know him?"I followed his gaze and saw a familiar figure standing outside. It was Zack. His eyes were rimmed red, and he looked at me with profound heartache. But I had no energy to deal with him now, and I certainly didn't want to look at him for even a second longer."I don't," I said indifferently. With that, I had Nathan shut the door on him. However, Zack refused to give up and continued to keep watch every single day. He took over the nurse's duties, bringing my meals in and offering to wipe me down. He kept a solicitous eye on my wounds, and the moment I frowned, he would panic and call for a nurse. He brought me my favorite flowers and carefully cut apples into bite-size pieces for me. He even cooked me some stew and other nutritious meals himself.Still, I ignored it all.

But by now, Zack found the mere thought of Avril repulsive. He roared at her again, "Get out!""You can't treat me like this! I'm pregnant with your child!" The words spilled out of Avril's mouth, her face etched with sorrow.Zack froze as a wave of deep remorse crashed over him.He and Ashley had once had a child, too. He suddenly recalled how overjoyed Ashley had been when she was pregnant. He opened their chat history and realized she had always initiated the conversations, while he only responded with cold, perfunctory replies. On January 20th, she texted, "Are you coming home tonight, dear? I have a huge surprise to share with you!"He replied indifferently, "Working late tonight. Not coming home.""You work so hard it breaks my heart… Please don't overexert yourself, dear. I'll make you some of your favorite stew tomorrow!"On January 22nd, she texted, "Dear, you haven't been home for two days. It must be really exhausting for you at work. Don't forget to take breaks e

At that moment, Zack was as furious as a beast, wanting nothing more than to tear Avril apart. He seized her by the throat, staring at her with an icy, piercing gaze. He roared through gritted teeth, "Even now, you're still trying to deceive me!"A murmur rippled through the guests."Good heavens, who would have expected such a twist? Has Avril been this vicious since she was a child? How could she have done such a thing to her own sister?""Poor Ashley. She was sold off by her parents when she was young, and now they're exploiting her again—that whole family is nothing but trash.""Zack is a ruthless jerk as well. He hurt his own wife for the sake of another woman! Tsk.""Anyone caught in a situation like this would be absolutely shattered!"As the crowd's murmurs grew, Zack's expression darkened further.Even Ashley's biological parents who loathed her to the bone, Calvin Holden and Patricia Cox, stared incredulously at Avril. They were completely stunned and at a loss for w

I returned home disheveled and packed my belongings.I burned everything associated with me in the fireplace, reducing it to ashes and making it seem as if I had never set foot in this villa. After handing a box to the butler, Ian Addams, I went straight to the airport. Just as I was about to board the plane, Zack sent a message with a feeble attempt to explain himself."I was in the wrong today, Ashley. I know you must be hurting because you didn't get to be the most beautiful bride today, and I shouldn't have said those things to you. I certainly shouldn't have laid a hand on you in front of everyone either."But I did it for the sake of the Burton family and your own reputation! Causing a scene like that at the wedding would have looked terrible for you. Besides, Avril's health is still fragile, and I was worried something might happen to her and you'd end up with a cruel and jealous reputation forever."I bought you a wedding gift. Let me make it up to you properly when I get

Avril sobbed, "I'm sorry… I ruined this wedding. It's all my fault for wearing the wedding dress that was meant for Ashley… Seeing me in it must have upset her, which is why she—"Zack flew into a rage and turned to roar at me. "Avril only agreed to stand in for you at the wedding because she cared about you! She wanted to make amends and put the past behind you. And instead of being grateful, you actually tried to kill your own sister?"When did you become so vicious, Ashley Holden? Or were you always this malicious to begin with?" he hollered at me.Avril whined, "No, Zackie, please don't blame Ashley… I know she didn't mean it. I just lost my footing…"The crowd erupted instantly with everyone hurling curses at me. Even Mom and Dad rushed over and slapped me across the face."You good-for-nothing wretch! You just can't stand to see Avril doing well! If we'd known you'd turn out this wicked, we never should have given birth to you! We should have strangled you the moment you wer
