Chapter 3

Author: Helen
The pounding on the bathroom door started almost at once. Margaret had arrived with private security and a spare key. "You refuse to leave Alex, so I'm arranging your exit," she called through the door. "Victor will pose for a few pictures. In the morning, you'll sign the divorce papers, and the seven hundred thousand dollars will be yours."

My mind was hazy, but I bit my lip hard enough to draw blood, forcing myself to stay conscious. "This isn't an arrangement. It's a crime."

When they broke down the door, two men forced me into a car and drove me to one of Victor's hotels. Margaret's lawyers later repackaged what happened there as a consensual encounter. Victor used the hidden-camera footage as proof of my "affair." He threatened to release the video and hurt my baby if I went to the police.

The next morning, I woke on the hotel bathroom floor, bruised and bleeding. My phone held dozens of flirtatious messages I had never sent. Victor played the edited clips for me. The camera avoided the restraint marks on my wrists and kept only the images that could destroy my marriage. He said the Walsh PR team already had a statement ready. If I told the truth, they would paint me as an unstable woman trying to extort a powerful family.

The assault sent me into premature labor. Noah and I both nearly died. Alex saw only the edited footage and my fingerprint on the divorce agreement. He believed the baby was dead. He believed I had taken the money and run away with Victor.

Noah weighed less than four and a half pounds and spent six weeks in an incubator. Every day, I stood outside the glass and counted his breaths. I worked at a commercial laundry during the day and returned to the hospital at night to pump what little milk I had. Victor routed the bills to his club, then used each payment to buy my silence. The seven hundred thousand dollars remained untouched in a separate account. Taking even one dollar would have felt like admitting their lie was true.

Victor had controlled me with that footage for five years. Sometimes he paid my rent, then saved the receipts as proof that I depended on him. He knew Noah's kindergarten, too. Whenever I tried to leave New York, he would smile and say, "Disappear, and child protective services gets a file proving you're an unfit mother."

Now Victor reached for me again. Alex caught my wrist first and ordered him to back off. They pulled me between them until pain detonated behind my eyes and my legs gave way.

"Mia!" Alex dropped to his knees and caught me, his voice panicked for the first time.

Victor sneered. "This isn't new. When the pain gets bad enough, she crawls to me and begs for pills. You're a little late to start caring, Mr. Walsh."

Alex's grip tightened. "Say that again."

"If you want her, ask what she wants." Victor bent over me. "Mia, who do you choose?"

I knew I had only days left. If Victor took me, I would not live long enough to see Noah again. I clutched Alex's sleeve with the last of my strength. "Get me to a hospital... please."

It was the first time in five years that I had reached for him willingly. Even through his expensive coat, I remembered the warmth of his arm. I remembered believing he would put himself between me and anything that tried to hurt me. His embrace was inches away, but reaching for him felt like grasping at a door already locked against me and waiting for him to decide whether I deserved to live.

Lydia held Alex's arm tighter, her voice trembling. "It's my birthday. Are you really going to leave me and the baby here for her?"

Victor laughed. "The great Alex Walsh has to take care of his wife first, doesn't he? Besides, isn't your family the reason Mia is dying?"

I turned toward his voice, confused.

Victor went on. "That donation agreement ten years ago? Alex ordered the hospital to draw it up himself. He knew exactly who you were, and he knew from the start that Lydia never needed all those collections."

After the case ended, Alex kept my little apartment. He did not carry Noah straight into the cold Walsh mansion. He waited for the family court to confirm paternity and custody, then moved into the neighborhood Noah knew. He learned school drop-offs, basic cooking, and parent-teacher conferences. At first, he was terrible at all of it. He forgot the sugar in his first cake. He mixed up every form at his first parent-teacher conference. When Noah spiked a fever one night, Alex panicked and called two private doctors. Noah cried until both strangers left. Eventually, Alex learned to crouch to his son's eye level and ask what he needed. Before every decision, he told him, "You can say no. No one will punish you." It was the choice I had never been given, and Alex was returning it to our son piece by piece. At first, Noah refused to call him Dad. Alex never pushed. He simply told the boy, again and again, "Your mommy didn't abandon you. She was the bravest person I've ever known. I'm t

Walsh Media released neither my medical records nor Lydia's private footage. The board hired outside counsel to finish the investigation and gave prosecutors and the press only the nonconfidential audit findings, forged-consent records, and public court filings. After making bail, Lydia called a press conference before anyone else could speak. Wearing an oversized hospital gown, she wept as she accused Alex of forcing her to end the pregnancy and holding her against her will. Then she claimed the Walsh family had invented my entire story to repair its image. At first, the performance worked. Social media turned on Alex almost overnight, and reporters asked whether the Walsh family was using its money to crush a woman who had just lost her child.Alex did not use his own outlets to clear his name. The board temporarily assigned all related coverage to an external editorial team for review, and he refused to give any emotionally charged interviews before the evidence was made public. For

Lydia saw that Alex would not bend, and the gentle mask finally fell. "How dare you blame all of this on me? You found Mia. You had her sign that agreement. You knew her grandmother's bills made it impossible to say no, and you still let the hospital take from her again and again. Then you married her and never once defended her against your mother or me. I didn't kill Mia alone. You're the one who should spend the rest of your life making amends."Alex's face went white. He gripped the edge of the table to keep himself standing. "I know. I'll carry my share of the blame for the rest of my life. But that doesn't mean you get to walk away from yours."Alex set a paternity report on the table. Lydia's baby was not his. Hotel records and her own messages showed that she had been seeing another man throughout their marriage."What happens with the pregnancy is between you and your doctor. I will not make that decision for you." Alex's voice held no warmth at all. "But I've filed for divorc

"Mother." Alex laid the bank statements, hotel key-card logs, and drug-purchase records in front of Margaret. "You drugged Mia. You had Victor stage the affair. Tell me I'm wrong."Color drained from Margaret's face, but her posture stayed perfect. "She had no family, no connections, nothing to offer the Walshes. Marrying Lydia secured the media division and the Grant investment. I ended a marriage that never should have happened.""So that gave you the right to destroy her life?""You answered her call that night, but you wouldn't come home because of Lydia's documentary," Margaret shot back. "You knew the authorization the production team had was questionable. You knew Mia didn't want her grandmother's medical records made public. If you really cared about her, why didn't you stop it?"Alex went still. When he finally spoke, his voice was raw. "That call... Mia was asking me to save her?""Yes. But you chose Lydia."That night, Alex entered my apartment for the first time. Braille la

After that night, I never opened my eyes again.Victor never took me to the hospital. Afraid I would report him if I woke up, he left me outside my apartment and drove away. By the time my neighbor found me, I was no longer breathing. Maybe I could not let go of Noah. Whatever the reason, I did not disappear. I became an unseen ghost, tethered to my son.Two weeks later, Noah walked into the Walsh Media building alone. He clutched an old photo of me and looked up at the front desk. "Has my mommy been here? My name is Noah. I want to take her home."After my death, a neighbor cared for Noah until child protective services placed him with a foster family. The adults said the police were searching for relatives, but he refused to believe I was gone. One day, he slipped away when the school van pulled up, then followed an address from an old newspaper and took two buses across the city. A five-year-old knew nothing about powerful families or tabloid scandals. He only believed the building

Alex didn't deny it.I thought of the night he proposed, when he slipped the ring onto my finger and whispered that my eyes were so clear he couldn't look away. I had always believed that was the moment he fell in love with me.Victor asked, "So why did you marry her? Guilt, or to keep a matching donor close?"Alex said nothing for a long time. Then he gave a bitter laugh. "Lydia could have relapsed at any moment. Keeping Mia in the family meant we would never have to hunt for another match."That one sentence broke something the tumor had not managed to reach. The wedding, the ring, that brief year of tenderness: all of it had been built around keeping a spare donor close. Maybe Alex had cared for me once. He had never truly seen me as Lydia's equal.I remembered every checkup during our marriage. Alex always arranged the car and the doctor himself, and I called it love. Whenever Lydia's numbers shifted, he asked whether I had a fever or had taken any medication, and I called that con
