Chapter 17: Sick Day

Milo never got sick.

He was the kid who ran in the rain, slept in cold apartments, never had insurance. He didn't get sick.

Until he did.

It started with a sniffle at 2 AM. By 6 AM, his nose was red, his freckles were lost in his flushed cheeks, and he was shivering even in Lucien's biggest hoodie.

Lucien woke up and touched his forehead.

"You're burning," Lucien said.

"I'm fine," Milo said automatically. Old habit.

Lucien looked at him. "Milo. Are you fine?"

Milo's lip wobbled. "...no."

That was new. Saying not fine.

Lucien called Lena at 6:05 AM. Lena never got calls at 6:05 AM.

"Cancel everything today," Lucien said.

"Lucien, you have the board—"

"Cancel it. Milo is sick."

Silence on the phone. Then Lena said, "The whole board?"

"The whole board. The Tokyo call. Everything. Tell them my boyfriend has a fever and I'm staying home. If they have a problem, they can fire me."

He hung up.

Milo stared at him from the bed, eyes watery. "You canceled work... for me?"

"I canceled work because my home is sick," Lucien said, crawling back into bed, pulling Milo into his chest. "My home is more important than my company. You taught me that."

He spent the day being a nurse.

He made soup — from a YouTube video, because billionaires don't know how to make soup — and it was salty but Milo ate it anyway.

He put a cold towel on Milo's forehead and changed it every 20 minutes.

He let Milo steal all the blankets and didn't complain when Milo sneezed on his favorite blue shirt.

At 3 PM, Milo's fever went down a little and he was whiny and clingy.

"Don't go," he mumbled, holding Lucien's wrist.

"I'm not going anywhere," Lucien said.

"Promise?"

"Promise."

Milo fell asleep on his chest, snotty nose and all. Lucien just held him and worked from his phone with one hand, answering emails that said "My boyfriend is sick today, please reschedule."

At 6 PM, Eleanor called.

"Is my son sick?" she asked Lucien.

"Our son," Lucien corrected. "Yes. Fever."

"Put him on," Eleanor said.

Lucien put the phone on speaker. "Milo, Mom is here."

"Mom?" Milo's voice, tiny and sick.

"Hi honey, I heard you're sick. Did Lucien make his terrible soup?"

Milo laughed and then coughed. "Yes. It's salty."

"I know. He made it for me when I was sick too. He's terrible at it but he means well. Drink water, okay? And make him stay with you. He will try to work."

"I'm staying," Lucien said.

"Good," Eleanor said. "Milo, honey, you call me if he tries to leave. I will hit him with a pancake, remember?"

"Remember," Milo whispered, smiling.

That night, Milo's fever broke. He woke up at 2 AM, sweaty but better, and Lucien was awake, watching him.

"You stayed," Milo said.

"Of course I stayed," Lucien said.

Milo curled into him. "No one ever stayed when I was sick before. Daniel said I was whiny when I was sick."

"You're whiny," Lucien said honestly. "You're very whiny. You sneezed 47 times and counted each one out loud."

Milo pouted. "Hey!"

"But you're my whiny," Lucien said, kissing his sweaty forehead. "My whiny, freckled, feverish boy. Mine to take care of."

Milo sniffled, but not from sickness this time.

"I like being yours when I'm sick too," he said. "Even snotty."

"Especially snotty," Lucien said.

And Milo fell back asleep, safe, because someone had finally stayed.

On the fridge the next morning, Milo wrote: I was sick and he canceled his board meeting. - M

Lucien added: Worth it. Don't get sick again. You are terrible at being sick. - L

And Eleanor, who visited with more soup, added: My soup is better. - E
