Chapter 16: Daniel Again

Milo saw Daniel first.

He was at the coffee shop near campus, editing photos for his new Tokyo campaign — because now Milo Chen had a campaign, because his boyfriend was a billionaire who believed in him.

And there was Daniel. Same hair. Same smile that used to make Milo do anything.

"Milo? Holy shit," Daniel said. "You look... wow."

Milo froze. His old hoodie suddenly felt too big. His lip piercing felt stupid.

"Hi," Milo said, small.

Daniel sat down without asking. "I saw Page Six. Billionaire boyfriend, huh? Beaumont Corp? Damn, you upgraded."

Milo didn't know what to say. Old feelings — shame, smallness — came back fast.

"I was a dick," Daniel said. "I know. I cheated and you... you deserved better. I heard you threw wine on Alex? That's very you."

Milo's hands shook around his camera.

Before he could answer, the coffee shop door opened and cold air came in.

Lucien.

Lucien Beaumont in a $5,000 coat, scanning the shop, eyes finding Milo instantly. He had been tracking — not in a creepy way, in a "Milo's location says he's been here for 2 hours and he didn't text me" way.

He saw Daniel. His jaw went tight.

He walked over. Didn't touch Daniel. Didn't need to. Just stood behind Milo's chair, hands on Milo's shoulders, claiming.

"Milo, Lena said your meeting ended an hour ago," Lucien said calmly, but his eyes were on Daniel. Cold CEO eyes. The ones that made boardrooms silent.

Milo leaned back into him instantly. Safe again.

"Lucien, this is Daniel," Milo said. "My ex."

"I know who Daniel is," Lucien said. He didn't offer a hand. "You're the reason Milo checks phones at 3 AM."

Daniel laughed nervously. "Look, man, we have history—"

"You have history," Lucien corrected. "He has a future. With me. So you can leave our table now."

Our table.

Milo looked up at Lucien, heart pounding. Lucien was jealous. For the first time, Lucien was the possessive one.

Daniel stood up. "Milo, if you ever—"

"He won't," Lucien said. And pulled out Milo's chair, picked up Milo's camera bag, and said, "Let's go home, love. You left your key at home again."

Milo grabbed his stuff and followed, freckles pink, feeling 10 feet tall.

Outside, in the cold, Lucien stopped and turned Milo around.

"Are you okay?" he asked, soft now, jealousy gone, just worry.

Milo nodded. "I thought I would feel... small again. When I saw him. But then you came and said 'our table' and I felt... big. Like I was yours and that made me big."

Lucien kissed his forehead. "You are big. You are my big, brave, wine-throwing photographer who owns a penthouse now."

Milo smiled. "Were you jealous?"

"So jealous I wanted to buy this coffee shop and ban him," Lucien admitted.

Milo gasped, delighted. "You were possessive!"

"I was. Is that okay?"

Milo jumped into his arms, right there on the sidewalk.

"It's hot," Milo whispered in his ear. "Be possessive. Be jealous. I like it when you do it. It means you love me like I love you."

Lucien carried him to the car, camera bag banging against his leg.

"Then I'm jealous," Lucien said. "I'm possessive. You're mine, Milo Chen. Don't talk to exes without me again, okay?"

"Okay," Milo said happily. "Only if you don't talk to Julian without me."

"Deal."

That night, Milo deleted Daniel's number for real. Not just from his phone — from his old laptop, from his email, from everywhere.

And he wrote on the fridge: I saw him and I didn't feel small. Because he said OUR table. - M

Lucien added underneath: I was jealous. It was awful. I loved it. - L
