Chapter 2

Author: Sunny Embrace
Just before noon, I went to Ashton’s office.

I usually brought him lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays whenever I had time.

Ashton used to wish I would come every day. He loved making sure everyone knew I was his girlfriend.

When I walked in that day, I saw that the photo of us that had always stood in the most prominent spot on his desk was gone. A landscape photo had taken its place.

Ashton took the lunch I had packed for him. Then, he hesitantly said, “Chloe, maybe you should stop coming by the office until after the wedding. I’m being considered for a promotion. I don’t want people gossiping about you.”

I gave a dry laugh and called him out. “Is that really why you want me to stay away? Or are you worried the girl with a crush on you will get upset when she sees me?”

Ashton froze. For a moment, panic flashed across his face.

Then he recovered and took my hand. “You noticed too?”

He gave a bitter smile. “I suppose it’s hard not to. She’s made it pretty obvious. But Chloe, you have to believe me. Nothing has happened between us.”

“Then why didn’t you tell her clearly that you weren’t interested?” I asked.

Ashton pressed his lips together for a second.

“Because I know you can’t help who you fall for. She knows I have a girlfriend, but that doesn’t make her feelings go away. But that is what unrequited love is like.

“Sometimes, wanting someone you can’t have only makes you want them more.”

He looked up at me briefly. “Chloe, you wouldn’t understand.”

I curled my hand into a fist.

Right, I had never had an unrequited love for anyone, but he had.

Rachel’s warning came back to me. "What if he sees himself in her and starts falling for her too?"

I was about to speak when a knock at the door interrupted me.

“Mr. King, I came to return your umbrella.”

It was Kimberly.

She walked in. When she saw me, she teared up.

“I’m sorry. I accidentally scratched the charm on the handle.”

I looked at what she was holding.

I had made that charm for Ashton myself.

Once, a friend of his had knocked a bead off it. Ashton had been so furious that he had nearly ended their friendship.

It already had several deep scratches, but Ashton did not raise his voice at Kimberly.

“It’s okay,” he said gently. “I know it was an accident.”

“Chloe.” Ashton turned to me. “It’s just a simple little thing. You can make me another one, right?”

I did not answer.

I stared at Kimberly as she walked away, lost in thought.

She was wearing the same pale blue dress Ashton had given me for my birthday last month.

No wonder none of the photos he posted after my birthday party showed my face clearly. He had taken them all from behind or from the side.

No wonder Kimberly had posted on my birthday.

[Thank you for letting me pretend, just for a moment, that I was your princess too.]

Ashton had not chosen that dress because it suited me.

He had dressed me to look like Kimberly, then posted photos that let her imagine herself in my place.

Nausea rose in my throat. I dug my nails into my palms and fought to keep my expression steady.

Soon after I left, Ashton texted me.

[I’ll keep my distance from her. I’m having dinner with some friends at seven the night after tomorrow. Come with me and take your mind off things, okay, Chloe?]

I knew what he was trying to do.

I did not arrive on time. Instead, I arrived at the private dining room half an hour early.

Before I opened the door, I heard his friends talking inside.

“Ashton, you spent twelve years pining for Chloe before she gave you a chance. She must think pretty highly of herself. Maybe it’s time to make her a little jealous.”

“That girl’s crazy about you. Don’t you want to enjoy being the one someone else is pining for?”

Ashton was in the city, just as I had thought. We met at a coffee shop. He arrived carrying an engagement ring.“Twelve years, Chloe.”He looked worn down as he sat across from me. His voice was breaking as he said, “Please forgive me this once. I don’t want to lose you.”I looked at the ring in silence. Its setting was shaped like a lily, my favorite flower. We had chosen it together before the wedding.Ashton used to say that after twelve years of pursuing me, he knew everything I liked.Yet at this moment…“You forgot I never take milk in my coffee.”I pushed my cup toward him.“It didn’t take long for you to change, Ashton.”He went still, unable to say a word.“You’re not afraid of losing me. You just can’t bear the thought that those twelve years of chasing me won’t end the way you wanted.”I smiled at him.“You love the idea of being the man who won me over. That’s why you saw yourself in Kimberly so easily.”The accusation hit home. Ashton looked up at me, strick

Chloe's POVAshton caught his breath.“So you know where Chloe is, don’t you? Can you give me her number? I need to talk to her.”“I doubt she has anything to say to you.”In the airport lounge, Rachel stopped me as I reached for the phone. She continued, “Ashton, you and Chloe are over. Enjoy being the one someone pines for. You won’t have to feel like you’re begging for love anymore.”Ashton’s breathing grew heavy. He said in a strained voice, “I swear, nothing happened between Kimberly and me.”“An emotional affair is still cheating, even if you never slept together. Why are you pretending that makes it okay?” Rachel frowned. “Chloe found out who you really are before the wedding. I’d call that a blessing. You can stop acting like she’s the only woman for you. There are plenty of pretty young women eager to chase you. Leave her alone.”“But she is the only woman I love!”I took the phone from Rachel.“Ashton, when will you understand that we were equals? I never made you

Ashton’s mind went blank.Had she really left the country?“Where did she go?”“I don’t know. She just said that she wasn’t here anymore. Didn’t you notice her handing her photography studio over to someone else a few days ago? I saw it when I walked past it.”Of course Ashton had not noticed. All week, he had thought they were merely giving each other the silent treatment. However, Chloe really had left him.She had even handed over her studio and walked away from her work here. Then what did that pregnancy termination report mean?Ashton could not bear to think about it.He rushed for the exit without so much as a glance at Kimberly on the stage.Kimberly went pale at his reaction and began to collapse backward again.“Hey! Ashton, come back! Kimberly’s fainted! She nearly died because she loves you, and you’re still treating her like this?”Ashton slowed, but before he could turn around, several uniformed officers entered the reception hall.“Ms. Kimberly Hower, we’re

Chloe soon blocked the number that kept calling.Ashton stared at his phone in disbelief. No matter how many times he tried, his calls would not go through. He grabbed the nurse who had brought him the report. “Where is Chloe? When did she ask you to give me this?”“Ms. Norman has been discharged. Her room was two floors below this one.”The nurse seemed to understand what had happened and gave him a look of contempt. “She asked us to wait until today to give you the report. She said it was the last thing she was leaving you, and that you should stop looking for her.”Ashton stumbled back. His face turned pale. What did she mean?He had never imagined Chloe would decide to end their pregnancy without telling him.He had certainly never imagined she would end their relationship for good.“Mr. King, this is all my fault. I shouldn’t have let you stay here to look after me.”Kimberly had heard enough to understand what was going on. A flicker of delight crossed her face befor

When Rachel arrived at the hospital, I was sitting on the bed and staring into space.“The baby…”She glanced at my stomach with a pained expression, then lowered her voice. “Chloe, you need to make a clean break.”I knew she was right. However, I had grown up an orphan. I had always wanted a family of my own, someone who shared my blood. When Ashton and I first started dating, we often talked about the child we might have one day.He said that whether we had a son or a daughter, he would be the best father in the world.“I’ll give you the happiest home. Trust me.”Someone knocked at the door. I looked up to see Kimberly come in carrying a bouquet of flowers.“Mrs. King, I’m sorry. I’ve talked things through with Mr. King.” She lowered her head. Her eyes were shining with tears.“I’m going to resign. You won’t see me around him again.”She set the flowers on my bedside table. That was when I noticed the braided leather bracelet on her wrist, with its tiny silver guardian an

Laughter erupted inside the room.I waited in silence until I heard Ashton answer. “Yeah. I don’t want to lose Chloe. But I also don’t want to let Kimberly down.”Everything around me seemed to go quiet. Too numb to feel much of anything, I smiled numbly and walked away. Then I took out my phone and booked a flight.“Better to cut your losses now,” Rachel said. She was hardly surprised when I told her I was leaving with her.Rachel had seen what was happening all along. I was the one who had kept holding on to hope.I told Ashton I felt unwell and would not be coming to dinner. He thought little of it. As far as he was concerned, I had put Kimberly out of my mind and would not bring her up again.Three days later, Ashton called as usual. He told me that my altered wedding dress had been delivered to the house and that I should come home to try it on.I felt no excitement. When I opened the front door, I found Kimberly trying on my dress.“What are you doing?”I stepped towa
