Chapter 4

Author: Sunny Embrace
When Rachel arrived at the hospital, I was sitting on the bed and staring into space.

“The baby…”

She glanced at my stomach with a pained expression, then lowered her voice. “Chloe, you need to make a clean break.”

I knew she was right.

However, I had grown up an orphan. I had always wanted a family of my own, someone who shared my blood.

When Ashton and I first started dating, we often talked about the child we might have one day.

He said that whether we had a son or a daughter, he would be the best father in the world.

“I’ll give you the happiest home. Trust me.”

Someone knocked at the door. I looked up to see Kimberly come in carrying a bouquet of flowers.

“Mrs. King, I’m sorry. I’ve talked things through with Mr. King.” She lowered her head. Her eyes were shining with tears.

“I’m going to resign. You won’t see me around him again.”

She set the flowers on my bedside table.

That was when I noticed the braided leather bracelet on her wrist, with its tiny silver guardian angel charm.

“I asked Mr. King if I could keep it as something to remember him by.” She hurriedly covered her wrist.

“He said it wasn’t anything important, so he gave it to me.”

It was not anything important.

That bracelet had taken me five hours to make. I had chosen the little angel charm because I wanted him to have something watching over him.

He had once told me that it meant more to him than his own life.

Yet he had given it away without a second thought.

“She’s resigning voluntarily, but she walked in here wearing a badge that says she’s the CEO’s executive assistant?”

After Kimberly left, Rachel gave a scornful laugh and said in contempt, “Those two really do deserve each other.”

The night air had turned cool. I said little and booked an abortion for three days later.

Ashton knew nothing about it. The next day, he even sent me another message.

He went on about how much Kimberly had given in and how considerate she was, then told me to stop making an issue of it.

He received no answer.

I had already handed my studio over to another friend. Everything else was taken care of. I would leave the country as soon as the procedure was over.

Perhaps my run of bad luck was not over. The day before my procedure, it got worse.

Ashton called me again and again while I was driving in rush hour traffic. When I finally answered, I lost focus for a moment and collided with a truck beside me.

“Chloe, when are you going to stop this? You’re the one who posted those claims that Kimberly is the other woman, aren’t you? You got people harassing her online!”

“She swallowed sleeping pills at home. If I’d arrived any later, she would’ve died! Won’t you stop until you’ve destroyed her?”

The airbag went off. Blood blurred my vision. The pain made my whole body shake. I gritted my teeth and said, “I didn’t post anything. Ashton, I’m outside your office. I just had an accident.”

He went quiet for a moment.

Then he snorted and indifferently said, “Even now, you’re still trying to lie to me? Get to the hospital and apologize to Kimberly right now, or we’re done.”

He hung up. As the ambulance sirens drew closer, I felt the last of my attachment to Ashton disappear.

“Doctor, no need to save the pregnancy. I was going to end it anyway.”

In the operating room, I used what little strength I had left to tell the doctor what I wanted. Then I closed my eyes.

I thought to myself, “Ashton, I should’ve been the one to say we were done. I never want to see you again.”

Third-person POV

Ashton came across a news report about the crash three days later.

Afraid Kimberly might try to hurt herself again, he had stayed by her side the entire time.

He and Chloe had not contacted each other.

Then he recognized the license plate in one of the photos.

Shocked, he was about to rush out when a nurse stopped him.

“Are you Mr. Ashton King? Your partner, Ms. Chloe Norman, asked us to give you a copy of her pregnancy termination record.”

The sheet of paper slipped from his fingers and fluttered to the floor.

At that same time, across the ocean, Chloe’s phone began buzzing nonstop.

Ashton was in the city, just as I had thought. We met at a coffee shop. He arrived carrying an engagement ring.“Twelve years, Chloe.”He looked worn down as he sat across from me. His voice was breaking as he said, “Please forgive me this once. I don’t want to lose you.”I looked at the ring in silence. Its setting was shaped like a lily, my favorite flower. We had chosen it together before the wedding.Ashton used to say that after twelve years of pursuing me, he knew everything I liked.Yet at this moment…“You forgot I never take milk in my coffee.”I pushed my cup toward him.“It didn’t take long for you to change, Ashton.”He went still, unable to say a word.“You’re not afraid of losing me. You just can’t bear the thought that those twelve years of chasing me won’t end the way you wanted.”I smiled at him.“You love the idea of being the man who won me over. That’s why you saw yourself in Kimberly so easily.”The accusation hit home. Ashton looked up at me, strick

Chloe's POVAshton caught his breath.“So you know where Chloe is, don’t you? Can you give me her number? I need to talk to her.”“I doubt she has anything to say to you.”In the airport lounge, Rachel stopped me as I reached for the phone. She continued, “Ashton, you and Chloe are over. Enjoy being the one someone pines for. You won’t have to feel like you’re begging for love anymore.”Ashton’s breathing grew heavy. He said in a strained voice, “I swear, nothing happened between Kimberly and me.”“An emotional affair is still cheating, even if you never slept together. Why are you pretending that makes it okay?” Rachel frowned. “Chloe found out who you really are before the wedding. I’d call that a blessing. You can stop acting like she’s the only woman for you. There are plenty of pretty young women eager to chase you. Leave her alone.”“But she is the only woman I love!”I took the phone from Rachel.“Ashton, when will you understand that we were equals? I never made you

Ashton’s mind went blank.Had she really left the country?“Where did she go?”“I don’t know. She just said that she wasn’t here anymore. Didn’t you notice her handing her photography studio over to someone else a few days ago? I saw it when I walked past it.”Of course Ashton had not noticed. All week, he had thought they were merely giving each other the silent treatment. However, Chloe really had left him.She had even handed over her studio and walked away from her work here. Then what did that pregnancy termination report mean?Ashton could not bear to think about it.He rushed for the exit without so much as a glance at Kimberly on the stage.Kimberly went pale at his reaction and began to collapse backward again.“Hey! Ashton, come back! Kimberly’s fainted! She nearly died because she loves you, and you’re still treating her like this?”Ashton slowed, but before he could turn around, several uniformed officers entered the reception hall.“Ms. Kimberly Hower, we’re

Chloe soon blocked the number that kept calling.Ashton stared at his phone in disbelief. No matter how many times he tried, his calls would not go through. He grabbed the nurse who had brought him the report. “Where is Chloe? When did she ask you to give me this?”“Ms. Norman has been discharged. Her room was two floors below this one.”The nurse seemed to understand what had happened and gave him a look of contempt. “She asked us to wait until today to give you the report. She said it was the last thing she was leaving you, and that you should stop looking for her.”Ashton stumbled back. His face turned pale. What did she mean?He had never imagined Chloe would decide to end their pregnancy without telling him.He had certainly never imagined she would end their relationship for good.“Mr. King, this is all my fault. I shouldn’t have let you stay here to look after me.”Kimberly had heard enough to understand what was going on. A flicker of delight crossed her face befor

Laughter erupted inside the room.I waited in silence until I heard Ashton answer. “Yeah. I don’t want to lose Chloe. But I also don’t want to let Kimberly down.”Everything around me seemed to go quiet. Too numb to feel much of anything, I smiled numbly and walked away. Then I took out my phone and booked a flight.“Better to cut your losses now,” Rachel said. She was hardly surprised when I told her I was leaving with her.Rachel had seen what was happening all along. I was the one who had kept holding on to hope.I told Ashton I felt unwell and would not be coming to dinner. He thought little of it. As far as he was concerned, I had put Kimberly out of my mind and would not bring her up again.Three days later, Ashton called as usual. He told me that my altered wedding dress had been delivered to the house and that I should come home to try it on.I felt no excitement. When I opened the front door, I found Kimberly trying on my dress.“What are you doing?”I stepped towa
