Chapter 4

Author: Jasmine Flower
“One more thing,” Grant said. “Harbor Point is officially moving forward. Vanessa has done a good job, so I’m promoting her to Director of Development.”

He watched me, waiting for a reaction.

“What do you think?”

It sounded like a question.

But the announcement had probably already been written.

“I have no objection.”

Grant visibly paused.

In the past, every time he handed one of my projects to Vanessa, I fought back with budgets, data, and risk reports.

This time, I said nothing.

His shoulders relaxed.

“Good. Because you haven’t brought in any new projects lately. I’m moving you to Records Review for now.”

The Director of Development controlled the company’s biggest projects.

Records Review organized old contracts and checked archived files.

This wasn’t a transfer.

He was removing me from senior management and burying me at the bottom of the company.

First, Grant took away my project.

Then he used my lack of results as an excuse to punish me.

“It’s temporary,” he added. “Once you get yourself together, I’ll move you back.”

“Fine.”

He stared at me for several seconds.

“You really agree?”

“Yes.”

My resignation had already been submitted to the board.

It would take effect automatically in two days.

He could put me anywhere he wanted.

It no longer mattered.

Grant had no idea.

He mistook my silence for surrender.

He thought I had finally accepted that loving him meant obeying him.

“Then it’s settled,” he said. “Move downstairs tomorrow. Vanessa needs a larger office to meet with investors.”

I had chosen that office myself during the first year I helped Grant build the company.

Now one sentence from him gave it to Vanessa.

“Fine.”

As Grant stood, his eyes moved to my bookshelf.

“Where’s the ceramic house?”

He had given it to me after we closed our first development deal.

The base was engraved with one line:

Grant and Evelyn. It started here.

I had kept it in the most visible place in my office.

Every time Grant disappointed me, I looked at it and reminded myself that we had once survived the hardest years together.

Grant used to make fun of me for caring about it.

He said it was a cheap gift from a developer and that I was childish for treating it like something precious.

Now that it was gone, he noticed immediately.

“It fell and broke,” I said.

His eyes dropped to the floor.

“Did you clean up the pieces?”

“Yes.”

“Have the cleaning staff check again. If they missed anything, someone could get cut.”

My obedience had put him in a better mood. His voice had lost some of its edge.

It almost sounded like concern.

But Vanessa was moving into this office tomorrow.

He wasn’t worried about me.

After Grant left, I opened the bottom drawer.

The ceramic house wasn’t broken.

I had placed it beside my wedding ring.

In two days, I would leave both behind.

I used to believe that if nothing else, the company was one place that belonged to Grant and me.

Then, a month earlier, I came home unexpectedly and found oat milk in our refrigerator.

I was allergic to oats.

Vanessa drank it every morning.

The refrigerator in my own home was being stocked for another woman.

Grant told me Vanessa occasionally came over for meetings.

So I checked the smart-lock history.

She had entered our home eleven times in the past two months.

Seven of those times, I hadn’t been there.

“You don’t need to come to London.”I held my employment contract up to the camera.“It’s a five-year appointment. I can’t simply walk away. My long-term residency application has already been approved.”“I’m not coming back.”Grant stared at the contract for a long time. The ring box slipped from his hand.“You planned this all along?”“Yes.”“So this was never meant to scare me?”“Never.”I ended the call and stopped answering his messages. One month later, the fund completed its acquisition of the old financial district.I signed the final document on its behalf. That same day, construction stopped at Harbor Point. When the crew opened the old foundation, they discovered large amounts of industrial waste buried underground. The city immediately sealed the site. The bank invoked the loan terms and demanded early repayment.Buyers who had already paid deposits filed a class-action lawsuit.Every one of those risks had been listed in my original report.Vanessa had deleted the warnings

Returning to international real estate was easier than I expected.During my three years at Whitmore Development, I had never stopped studying the market. At the acquisition meeting for the old financial district, I discovered that the seller had hidden an eighty-million-dollar tax liability. If we signed that day, the fund would become responsible for the entire debt.I stopped the deal and reopened negotiations.Three days later, the purchase price had been reduced by one hundred and twenty million dollars. The board approved the new agreement unanimously. In front of everyone, Robert said, “Welcome back, Evelyn. This position should always have been yours.”After the meeting, I received several messages from Grant.Vanessa has been removed as Director of Development. Her access to the house has been deleted. She will never enter our home again.Your office is untouched. Come back, and everything will return to the way it was.He wrote as if he were giving me one final opportunity.T

I didn’t argue with him.I took out my phone and called the police.“Hello. Someone is preventing me from leaving an office. The address is—”Grant’s expression changed. He immediately released the door.“Evelyn, have you lost your mind?”“No. I just want the police to explain whether a husband has the right to hold his wife against her will.”He reached for my phone.I stepped back and put the call on speaker. The dispatcher’s voice came through clearly.“Ma’am, are you safe right now? Does the other person have a weapon?”Grant’s hand froze. He didn’t dare touch me again.“She’s safe,” he said toward the phone. “This is a marital dispute.”“Then move.”I looked straight at him.Several seconds passed before Grant finally stepped aside.I told the dispatcher I was no longer in immediate danger, then ended the call.Grant’s face was livid.“You called the police just to force me to give in?”“You refused to let me leave.”He forced down his anger, and his voice suddenly softened.“Fine

Grant stared at the divorce agreement, his entire body rigid.A flash of delight crossed Vanessa’s eyes. She lowered her head quickly, but I saw it.“Evelyn, don’t do anything rash,” she said softly. “You’ve been married for three years. You can’t throw that away over one small misunderstanding—”“Get out,” Grant said.Vanessa froze.“Grant, I’m only worried—”“I said get out.”His voice wasn’t loud, but it was cold enough to silence her.Vanessa bit her lip.“Fine. Talk this through calmly. Please don’t hurt each other because of me.”She walked out with a smile she could barely hide. The moment the door closed, Grant grabbed the divorce agreement.“What do you want?”He flipped through the pages.“Your position back? More money? Or do you want Vanessa removed from Harbor Point?”“I don’t want anything.”“Stop pretending.”He slammed the agreement onto the desk.“You stayed quiet all week because you planned to use divorce to force me to back down, didn’t you?”“Evelyn, I already prom

“Grant, don’t be angry,” Vanessa said, stepping closer and resting a hand on his arm. “Evelyn is only jealous because she cares about you.”Then she looked at me.“My necklace clasp broke. Grant was only helping me fasten it. We’re meeting investors tonight, and I couldn’t show up looking careless.”Her voice softened, as if she were speaking to an unreasonable child.“Please don’t misunderstand, Evelyn. We were working. That’s all.”She had crossed the line with my husband. Now she was teaching me how I should react to it.I remained silent.Grant took my silence as guilt.“This company has rules,” he said. “You entered the CEO’s office without permission. Your bonus for this month is canceled, and your pay will be cut in half.”The same man who ignored every boundary Vanessa crossed was suddenly very concerned about rules.Rachel spoke without thinking.“Mr. Whitmore, but Evelyn already—”Grant silenced her with one cold look.“I don’t want excuses. Do as I said.”Rachel closed her m

I confronted Grant with the smart-lock records. He pulled up several security clips showing Vanessa entering our home with project files in her arms.“Our house is close to the office. It’s convenient for meetings.”“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”“Because it’s my house too. I don’t need your permission to bring an employee home for work.”He accused me of monitoring the locks, searching the refrigerator, and becoming increasingly paranoid. After that, he brought Vanessa home even more often. He wasn’t trying to reassure me.He was pushing the boundary on purpose, almost daring me to object so he could punish me again.Technically, I still had no proof that they were having an affair.Every visit had a work file.Every late night had an explanation. For a while, I questioned myself.Maybe I had imagined the intimacy between them.Maybe I really was the problem. If I had put half the energy I spent analyzing Grant and Vanessa into my own career, I might have accomplished far more by now.T
