Chapter 13

作者: Shirley
For some reason, Zeno seemed upset. He hadn't sent a single message all day.

It was a complete one-eighty from his usual clingy behavior, where he usually acted like he wanted to be surgically attached to my hip.

Feeling suspicious, I texted him that night and asked him to meet me downstairs by the safehouse on the Lower East Side.

"Found someone new?" I asked, looking up at him.

"If you do, just say so. I'm not the type to be a clingy girlfriend."

He stared at me dead on, his jaw clenched tight

  • He Sold Me for Cheap   Chapter 17

Three months later.Julian formally requested to be withdrawn from all direct affairs of his branch of the Marchesi family.Madre Marchesi pulled some strings for him with the family council, and he left for their ancestral home in Sicily to recuperate. He kept his word. He never appeared before me again. The night he boarded his flight, he sent one last message to the encrypted channel only the two of us used.He repeated the last sentence I ever gave him, word for word:"I'm sorry. And I wish you happiness."As the message popped onto the screen, a private jet flew low over the East River.Against the night sky, the red lights on its wings blinked.Soon, it vanished into the clouds.I looked up for a moment, waiting until the two red dots had disappeared completely. Then, I unlocked my phone and decisively deleted the forum app."Baby," Zeno's voice came from behind me."What are you looking at?"He smiled, revealing the same slightly crooked canine from his Oreo-smuggling days at ca

Madre Marchesi left the room, gently closing the door behind her.I sat by the bed for a while. Then I spoke softly, "You're awake, aren't you?"The eyelashes of the man in the bed fluttered slowly.Julian slowly opened his eyes.I had noticed a while ago. His eyelashes had twitched right when his aunt reached the part about "when he was eight years old.""Thank you," I said earnestly.Julian had lost the arrogant aura of a Marchesi heir. His unstyled black hair fell softly against the pillow. His face was pale as paper, and the rims of his eyes were suspiciously red.The bullets had shattered his exquisite, glittering playboy shell. What lay beneath was a core so fragile it was painful to see."I just... had a dream."He stared blankly at the hospital ceiling, his gaze slightly unfocused."I dreamed I never sold that account.""I dreamed that you and I just kept dating. We went from the dark web to real life. I had a glass of Chianti with your father on the doorstep of the Pierce fami

The unlock passcode for Julian's phone was my birthday.I scrolled through his contacts and called his parents, one by one. When I told him the news, his father, every inch the district Capo, just snorted. "Shot? I'm in the middle of a smuggling op at the border. I don't have time for this.""Find out how much hush money and medical fees are needed. I'll have my men wire it straight into the doctor's account."Then he ruthlessly hung up.I dialed his mother's number several times, but no one ever answered. Finally, I got his aunt's private number from one of his men.By the time his aunt arrived at the hospital, Julian's surgery had just ended.Fortunately, the private medical team the Marchesi family kept in Brooklyn was professional enough. Several bullets had narrowly missed his vital organs. The blood loss was terrifying, but he survived. He was still unconscious, his bare chest wrapped in heavy bandages seeping with blood."Madam," I said, a twinge of guilt washing over me as I re

"Harper Pierce, you have absolutely no shame."When I walked out of a Bellagio-affiliated casino in New York, Gia blocked my way from behind a pillar in the VIP parking garage. Her eyes were red, and her gaze was filled entirely with hatred."What's so great about stealing someone else's boyfriend?""Are you blind?" I shot back."What did you say?" She didn't seem to process it.I brushed the dust off my coat, getting impatient. "I said, are you blind? Julian has been chasing me around like a puppy this whole time. You really couldn't tell?"Gia bit her lower lip hard. "If you hadn't seduced him first, why would he dump me?""Did you know that the person you dated on the dark web for a year was him? He was the one who paid his family's tech guy to dig up your ugly photo. He thought you were disgusting, so he sold the account on the market to Zeno!""He was the one who was disgusted by you! He was the one who threw you away!"As she spoke, her eyes held a sick sort of excitement, a palp

You really don't like me that much."I was just about to fire back a sarcastic remark when a sudden force yanked me into the shadows against the rough brick wall.Zeno's familiar scent of cedar and leather enveloped me.Only this time, his aura was different from usual. There was a ruthless edge to it.He pinned me against the cold brick wall, bracing one hand beside my head, looking down at me.The neon orange glow from the building across the street bled into the alley mouth, fal

The next day, as I walked out of the Pierce family's underground shooting range, someone blocked my path in the side alley.I turned around.Julian was leaning against the brick wall, his figure half swallowed by the shadows, his expression unreadable."What is it?" I frowned."You really like that wild dog so much?" He kept his hands in his suit pockets, slowly stepping closer.I rolled my eyes coldly. "He's my man. Who else would I like? You? You're a psycho."Just as I was about to walk around him, he called out to me sharply."What if the person who talked to you on the dark web for a year wasn't him at all?"I stopped cold.I slowly turned around, looking straight at him."What do you mean?""Harper, the person you were dating online for a whole year... that was me."Julian sounded like he was finally unburdening himself, the words tumbling out fast and urgent."I had a moment of stupidity and listed the account on that neutral dark web market. But you have to listen to me—for tha
