Chapter 2

Author: Shirley
When my best friend Sloane came looking for me, she looked pale.

"Did you and Julian break up?"

"Why do you ask?" I looked up at her.

She gritted her teeth and simply shoved her phone right in front of my face: "Look for yourself."

Sloane and I used to play online shooters together at a dark web club, and she'd gotten close to one of the guys in Julian's crew.

That guy had a sudden crisis of conscience and sent her screenshots from an internal group chat for the Marchesi family's "made men."

Someone in the group asked Julian:

"Boss, how come we haven't seen you on missions with that wild little kitten from the dark web lately?"

Julian replied coldly:

"Dumped her."

The chat immediately exploded.

"Weren't you guys super hot and heavy? Why the sudden cut-off?"

"I always heard her voice acting all seductive and thought she was a top-tier babe. But in a photo she sent last time, half of a takeout receipt was showing. I tracked the location and had a hacker pull the street cameras."

"Turns out she's a hillbilly with coke-bottle glasses and hair like a steel wool pad. Boys, I almost puked my lunch all over my Cartier watch. Had to dump her."

Someone chimed in to jeer: "Hahaha, she's probably breathy from the air whistling through the metal in her mouth. The sweeter she sounds, the more disgusting she must look!"

"I remember that chick was crazy about you. She did whatever you asked. You think she'd really let you go?"

Julian's reply was casual. "Of course she didn't want to. So I sold her off to whoever bid highest on a burner ID I listed on the black market. She doesn't even know my real last name anyway."

Right after that, he posted a screenshot of the thread where he sold his dark web girlfriend.

His underlings immediately began kissing up to him:

"Holy shit, that's a genius move. You even made money off a girl you were done with."

"Now that ugly chick can never find you. Brilliant. You put up with her for a whole year, and now you're finally free."

"It must have been suffocating to be with that kind of trash for a year. How the hell did you stomach that for a year?"

Julian replied quickly: "Just got a taste for something new. The youngest daughter of one of the family's old-timers just got back. She's a total knockout, so pure and innocent."

As the son of a district Capo, Julian was generous with his money and casually tossed plenty of scraps to his men.

That crew was incredibly eager to flatter him.

Someone immediately asked: "Damn, only the prince of the Marchesi family could land a top-tier girl so fast."

"Only the hottest girls are worthy of climbing into your bed."

"Got any pictures? Let the boys feast their eyes!"

Julian dropped a photo into the chat.

The girl in the picture wore a white satin slip dress with a sheer knit cardigan over it. Her ash-blonde hair was tied in a loose low ponytail resting near her collarbone, and her eyes curved into crescents when she smiled.

She was undeniably beautiful.

I recognized her instantly. It was Gia from the Bianchi family.

Just a few days ago, she had posted a selfie in the underground club's youth chat. The moment that face appeared, all the guys were calling her their dream girl.

Sloane was so furious her knuckles turned white. "Julian dated you for over a year, dumped you just like that, and treated you like secondhand goods to sell on the net. Is that something a human being does?"

"Besides, how does Gia even compare to you now? With her plain look and fake innocent act, all she knows is how to drape a man's suit jacket over her shoulders and play the damsel!"

"Harper, if you post a picture of what you look like now in their group chat, he'll be kicking himself so hard."

I said nothing, merely lowering my head to continue looking at the screen.

Out of the hundreds of people in the group, only one low-level soldier cautiously spoke up for me.

"But that girl from before really cared about you, Boss. I remember during that shootout on the block, she was the one who got the intel, tipped you off, and fed you the strategy. She even got heat for it afterward. Isn't it a bit too cruel to treat her like this?"

A few minutes later, Julian replied dismissively:

"I only care about a pretty face. Is that my fault? The thought of flirting with that brace-faced hillbilly makes me nauseous."

"If she wants someone to blame, she should blame herself for being ugly."

Three months later.Julian formally requested to be withdrawn from all direct affairs of his branch of the Marchesi family.Madre Marchesi pulled some strings for him with the family council, and he left for their ancestral home in Sicily to recuperate. He kept his word. He never appeared before me again. The night he boarded his flight, he sent one last message to the encrypted channel only the two of us used.He repeated the last sentence I ever gave him, word for word:"I'm sorry. And I wish you happiness."As the message popped onto the screen, a private jet flew low over the East River.Against the night sky, the red lights on its wings blinked.Soon, it vanished into the clouds.I looked up for a moment, waiting until the two red dots had disappeared completely. Then, I unlocked my phone and decisively deleted the forum app."Baby," Zeno's voice came from behind me."What are you looking at?"He smiled, revealing the same slightly crooked canine from his Oreo-smuggling days at ca

Madre Marchesi left the room, gently closing the door behind her.I sat by the bed for a while. Then I spoke softly, "You're awake, aren't you?"The eyelashes of the man in the bed fluttered slowly.Julian slowly opened his eyes.I had noticed a while ago. His eyelashes had twitched right when his aunt reached the part about "when he was eight years old.""Thank you," I said earnestly.Julian had lost the arrogant aura of a Marchesi heir. His unstyled black hair fell softly against the pillow. His face was pale as paper, and the rims of his eyes were suspiciously red.The bullets had shattered his exquisite, glittering playboy shell. What lay beneath was a core so fragile it was painful to see."I just... had a dream."He stared blankly at the hospital ceiling, his gaze slightly unfocused."I dreamed I never sold that account.""I dreamed that you and I just kept dating. We went from the dark web to real life. I had a glass of Chianti with your father on the doorstep of the Pierce fami

The unlock passcode for Julian's phone was my birthday.I scrolled through his contacts and called his parents, one by one. When I told him the news, his father, every inch the district Capo, just snorted. "Shot? I'm in the middle of a smuggling op at the border. I don't have time for this.""Find out how much hush money and medical fees are needed. I'll have my men wire it straight into the doctor's account."Then he ruthlessly hung up.I dialed his mother's number several times, but no one ever answered. Finally, I got his aunt's private number from one of his men.By the time his aunt arrived at the hospital, Julian's surgery had just ended.Fortunately, the private medical team the Marchesi family kept in Brooklyn was professional enough. Several bullets had narrowly missed his vital organs. The blood loss was terrifying, but he survived. He was still unconscious, his bare chest wrapped in heavy bandages seeping with blood."Madam," I said, a twinge of guilt washing over me as I re

"Harper Pierce, you have absolutely no shame."When I walked out of a Bellagio-affiliated casino in New York, Gia blocked my way from behind a pillar in the VIP parking garage. Her eyes were red, and her gaze was filled entirely with hatred."What's so great about stealing someone else's boyfriend?""Are you blind?" I shot back."What did you say?" She didn't seem to process it.I brushed the dust off my coat, getting impatient. "I said, are you blind? Julian has been chasing me around like a puppy this whole time. You really couldn't tell?"Gia bit her lower lip hard. "If you hadn't seduced him first, why would he dump me?""Did you know that the person you dated on the dark web for a year was him? He was the one who paid his family's tech guy to dig up your ugly photo. He thought you were disgusting, so he sold the account on the market to Zeno!""He was the one who was disgusted by you! He was the one who threw you away!"As she spoke, her eyes held a sick sort of excitement, a palp

For some reason, Zeno seemed upset. He hadn't sent a single message all day.It was a complete one-eighty from his usual clingy behavior, where he usually acted like he wanted to be surgically attached to my hip.Feeling suspicious, I texted him that night and asked him to meet me downstairs by the safehouse on the Lower East Side."Found someone new?" I asked, looking up at him."If you do, just say so. I'm not the type to be a clingy girlfriend."He stared at me dead on, his jaw clenched tight."I knew it. You really don't like me that much."I was just about to fire back a sarcastic remark when a sudden force yanked me into the shadows against the rough brick wall.Zeno's familiar scent of cedar and leather enveloped me.Only this time, his aura was different from usual. There was a ruthless edge to it.He pinned me against the cold brick wall, bracing one hand beside my head, looking down at me.The neon orange glow from the building across the street bled into the alley mouth, fal

The next day, as I walked out of the Pierce family's underground shooting range, someone blocked my path in the side alley.I turned around.Julian was leaning against the brick wall, his figure half swallowed by the shadows, his expression unreadable."What is it?" I frowned."You really like that wild dog so much?" He kept his hands in his suit pockets, slowly stepping closer.I rolled my eyes coldly. "He's my man. Who else would I like? You? You're a psycho."Just as I was about to walk around him, he called out to me sharply."What if the person who talked to you on the dark web for a year wasn't him at all?"I stopped cold.I slowly turned around, looking straight at him."What do you mean?""Harper, the person you were dating online for a whole year... that was me."Julian sounded like he was finally unburdening himself, the words tumbling out fast and urgent."I had a moment of stupidity and listed the account on that neutral dark web market. But you have to listen to me—for tha
