Chapter 4

Author: Shirley
In the underground club's cross-family youth group chat, Gia posted another photo.

On a white yacht anchored off the coast of Miami, she leaned against the railing in a bikini, an oversized men's dress shirt draped over her shoulders, an obvious attempt at innocent seduction.

The face of the man pressing close to her was pixelated out.

But I instantly recognized the custom cufflink peeking out of the man's shirt sleeve. It bore the Marchesi family crest, exactly the one Julian always wore.

The gangsters in the chat immediately started cheering:

"Miss Gia gracing us with her presence!"

"Damn, she's perfect from head to toe. Who's the lucky guy next to her?"

"Judging by the vibe, that's gotta be our prince, Julian. All hail the boss!"

Sloane had just told me two days ago that the night Gia posted that photo in her slip dress, Julian immediately dispatched a private helicopter to Gia's estate.

He gifted her an entire trunk full of haute couture jewelry and rented out a whole block to set off fireworks for her.

Now, the two of them were officially public.

Julian arrogantly dropped screenshots of underground casino VIP chips with staggering denominations, flooding the chat.

"The young master is always so generous! A talented man and a beautiful woman, a perfect match!"

"The chemistry is off the charts. You two need to get married already!"

"In our circle, only a top-tier babe like Gia is worthy of our boss."

Someone steered the conversation toward me:

"You guys probably don't know, but our boss got played for over a year by some brace-faced ugly girl on the dark web. Her looks almost made him puke. Thankfully, he finally cleansed his palate and traded up for a real prize. Congrats, boss!"

Gia raised an eyebrow and asked: "Oh? What ugly girl are we talking about?"

That person added fuel to the fire, broadcasting the whole story about the dark web account being sold off.

Instantly, the chat filled with foul, unbearable mockery directed at me.

"Holy shit, trash like that actually dared to latch onto our family's young master?"

"A brace-faced hillbilly like that wouldn't even get touched by a dog in real life. She could only hide behind a keyboard, fake her voice, and trick blind men who've never seen a woman before."

"I heard that ugly chick is so desperate she still wants to meet the boss's son. Who knows, maybe she'll sneak into the club party this weekend. We'll all have to gather around and see what this 'prize' looks like up close."

Gia followed up with a giggling emoji: "That girl is probably just starved for attention. It's not her fault she's unlucky with her looks, but pretending to be someone else just to mess with Julian's head is going too far."

Julian replied: "Don't mention her. Just thinking about the year I wasted on her makes me sick. Thank God I have you now."

Julian didn't know I had always lurked in this group using an alternate account.

I had watched every single step of this "new romance" of his with crystal clarity.

Someone else in the chat asked: "Boss, what's the name of that disgusting hillbilly anyway? We might run into her on the streets someday."

Julian sneered and typed out a few letters: "Harper Pierce."

"Pfft, Pierce? Sounds like some bottom-feeder family collecting protection money in the slums. No real power. No wonder she's so cheap and pathetic."

Staring at that line of text, I let out a cold laugh.

The next second, I switched to my main account and logged into the group.

The system permissions flashed a notification: "Harper Pierce" has joined the group chat.

Within seconds, the chat that had been scrolling madly fell into a deathly silence.

But I knew very well that behind their screens, all those gangsters were definitely staring wide-eyed, waiting for a good show.

After about three minutes, Gia sent two messages, paired with pink heart emojis.

"Oh my, Miss Pierce is in the group too. Welcome, welcome!"

"By the way, Harper, there's a cross-family rave at our underground club this weekend. Everyone is bringing a plus-one. Do you want to come play?"

I knew she just wanted me to show up so I could be served as the joke of the night.

I let a smirk play on my lips and casually typed out a single sentence.

"Count me in."

Three months later.Julian formally requested to be withdrawn from all direct affairs of his branch of the Marchesi family.Madre Marchesi pulled some strings for him with the family council, and he left for their ancestral home in Sicily to recuperate. He kept his word. He never appeared before me again. The night he boarded his flight, he sent one last message to the encrypted channel only the two of us used.He repeated the last sentence I ever gave him, word for word:"I'm sorry. And I wish you happiness."As the message popped onto the screen, a private jet flew low over the East River.Against the night sky, the red lights on its wings blinked.Soon, it vanished into the clouds.I looked up for a moment, waiting until the two red dots had disappeared completely. Then, I unlocked my phone and decisively deleted the forum app."Baby," Zeno's voice came from behind me."What are you looking at?"He smiled, revealing the same slightly crooked canine from his Oreo-smuggling days at ca

Madre Marchesi left the room, gently closing the door behind her.I sat by the bed for a while. Then I spoke softly, "You're awake, aren't you?"The eyelashes of the man in the bed fluttered slowly.Julian slowly opened his eyes.I had noticed a while ago. His eyelashes had twitched right when his aunt reached the part about "when he was eight years old.""Thank you," I said earnestly.Julian had lost the arrogant aura of a Marchesi heir. His unstyled black hair fell softly against the pillow. His face was pale as paper, and the rims of his eyes were suspiciously red.The bullets had shattered his exquisite, glittering playboy shell. What lay beneath was a core so fragile it was painful to see."I just... had a dream."He stared blankly at the hospital ceiling, his gaze slightly unfocused."I dreamed I never sold that account.""I dreamed that you and I just kept dating. We went from the dark web to real life. I had a glass of Chianti with your father on the doorstep of the Pierce fami

The unlock passcode for Julian's phone was my birthday.I scrolled through his contacts and called his parents, one by one. When I told him the news, his father, every inch the district Capo, just snorted. "Shot? I'm in the middle of a smuggling op at the border. I don't have time for this.""Find out how much hush money and medical fees are needed. I'll have my men wire it straight into the doctor's account."Then he ruthlessly hung up.I dialed his mother's number several times, but no one ever answered. Finally, I got his aunt's private number from one of his men.By the time his aunt arrived at the hospital, Julian's surgery had just ended.Fortunately, the private medical team the Marchesi family kept in Brooklyn was professional enough. Several bullets had narrowly missed his vital organs. The blood loss was terrifying, but he survived. He was still unconscious, his bare chest wrapped in heavy bandages seeping with blood."Madam," I said, a twinge of guilt washing over me as I re

"Harper Pierce, you have absolutely no shame."When I walked out of a Bellagio-affiliated casino in New York, Gia blocked my way from behind a pillar in the VIP parking garage. Her eyes were red, and her gaze was filled entirely with hatred."What's so great about stealing someone else's boyfriend?""Are you blind?" I shot back."What did you say?" She didn't seem to process it.I brushed the dust off my coat, getting impatient. "I said, are you blind? Julian has been chasing me around like a puppy this whole time. You really couldn't tell?"Gia bit her lower lip hard. "If you hadn't seduced him first, why would he dump me?""Did you know that the person you dated on the dark web for a year was him? He was the one who paid his family's tech guy to dig up your ugly photo. He thought you were disgusting, so he sold the account on the market to Zeno!""He was the one who was disgusted by you! He was the one who threw you away!"As she spoke, her eyes held a sick sort of excitement, a palp

For some reason, Zeno seemed upset. He hadn't sent a single message all day.It was a complete one-eighty from his usual clingy behavior, where he usually acted like he wanted to be surgically attached to my hip.Feeling suspicious, I texted him that night and asked him to meet me downstairs by the safehouse on the Lower East Side."Found someone new?" I asked, looking up at him."If you do, just say so. I'm not the type to be a clingy girlfriend."He stared at me dead on, his jaw clenched tight."I knew it. You really don't like me that much."I was just about to fire back a sarcastic remark when a sudden force yanked me into the shadows against the rough brick wall.Zeno's familiar scent of cedar and leather enveloped me.Only this time, his aura was different from usual. There was a ruthless edge to it.He pinned me against the cold brick wall, bracing one hand beside my head, looking down at me.The neon orange glow from the building across the street bled into the alley mouth, fal

The next day, as I walked out of the Pierce family's underground shooting range, someone blocked my path in the side alley.I turned around.Julian was leaning against the brick wall, his figure half swallowed by the shadows, his expression unreadable."What is it?" I frowned."You really like that wild dog so much?" He kept his hands in his suit pockets, slowly stepping closer.I rolled my eyes coldly. "He's my man. Who else would I like? You? You're a psycho."Just as I was about to walk around him, he called out to me sharply."What if the person who talked to you on the dark web for a year wasn't him at all?"I stopped cold.I slowly turned around, looking straight at him."What do you mean?""Harper, the person you were dating online for a whole year... that was me."Julian sounded like he was finally unburdening himself, the words tumbling out fast and urgent."I had a moment of stupidity and listed the account on that neutral dark web market. But you have to listen to me—for tha
