Chapter 2

Penulis: River Snapshot
Anton's POV

The video abruptly ended. I looked up and stared at myself in the mirror. The suit didn't fit. The sleeves were too short, making it look terribly awkward on me. It was the style Julian liked, and it was his size.

I took the suit off. It took me a long time to finally pull it off. Suddenly, I found it all absurd. I was the groom, yet I hadn't been involved in my own wedding.

My phone screen lit up. A message suddenly appeared in the family group chat. "Congratulations, Vivian…"

I hadn't even finished reading the rest when the message was immediately deleted.

The next moment, Vivian tagged me in the group chat. "Anton, I've suddenly got a stomachache. Harper and the others are taking me to the hospital, so the wedding is on hold. You've had a long day too. What do you want to eat? We'll bring something back for you."

Before I could reply, Julian answered for me. "Anton likes the ravioli shop near the school."

Vivian replied instantly. "Okay."

But I had long since forgotten this place. Julian was the one who loved the food there. He had brought me there several times. I didn't know when it started, but somehow, everything he liked became something I liked too. Not a single trait he remembered about me was actually mine.

My family kept chatting in the group, and the message count quickly shot past 99. I had already figured it out. Besides this group, they had another group without me. If anyone sent a message there by mistake, it would quickly get buried under a bunch of new messages.

I started typing a message, wanting to ask what that congratulations was all about. But halfway through, I deleted it.

I could never get a word in when they were chatting. Whenever I occasionally sent a message or two in the group, everyone would silently ignore it. It wasn't as if I had never spoken up.

But Julian said, "Anton, you're too quiet. You only send a sentence or two, so we really don't notice."

After that, I tried my best to text more. If no one responded, I would repeat myself several times.

Vivian frowned and interrupted me. "Anton, sending it once is enough. We can read your texts perfectly well."

Of course they could. They simply chose to ignore my words and chose to treat me like a mute.

A message from a colleague remained on my phone. "Anton, the station's team of reporters being sent to Dalton is still looking for a sign language interpreter. Are you interested?"

Ever since I heard about this job, I had been planning to discuss it with Vivian. But I didn't need to anymore.

After sending off my application for the assignment, I went straight to my room and started packing. All the important things had already been moved to the new house. Only a pile of old clothes remained. They were all things Julian no longer wore. Once I finished packing, I threw every last one of them away.

Vivian and Julian didn't come home until very late that night. Mom and Julian's father, Caleb Cadwell, came back with them. Even Vivian's parents were there.

They thought I wasn't home, so they sat around the couch and started talking. I was just about to leave when I heard Vivian crying. "Julian, what should I do? Anton and I just got married, and now I'm pregnant with your child."

My mind went blank.

The next moment, Julian patted Vivian's back and pulled her into his arms. "Don't worry. We'll get our marriage license first, then explain it to him later. If we just talk to him, he'll understand."

Mom stared at Vivian's belly, looking nervous. "Vivian, don't cry. You need to take care of the baby."

Vivian's mother, Cindy Garcia, chimed in, "You've already had the wedding. All that's left is to get the marriage certificate. You might as well make this official."

Vivian's father, Josiah Wilder, shook Caleb's hand, smiling. "Now we're officially in-laws. That's great."

"We're family now. There's no need to be so formal."

I felt a chill run down my spine. I clenched my fists in anger, and suddenly, everything became clear. The message they had deleted in the group chat was actually a message congratulating my future wife on becoming pregnant with my stepbrother's child.

I knew I could never win against Julian when it came to winning over the family. But I had never imagined that everyone already knew the two of them were together, yet they chose to keep me in the dark. And like a fool, I had played along with their charade.

Anton's POVVivian was stunned. She was about to say something, but I cut her off. "Vivian, ever since we were children, you've all been the ones making decisions for me. I never even had the chance to speak for myself. You never once stopped to think about whether I wanted any of it. You never asked if I was okay with it. I only have aphasia. I'm not mute!"I practically shouted that last sentence. These were words I had kept to myself for far too long. When I finally said them out loud, every one of them still carried the pain they had left behind. Her face instantly turned pale. "Anton, I'm sorry. I—""Vivian, go home. This isn't the place for you." I turned around and walked away. "When you get back, pass a message on to them for me. From now on, I don't want any of you coming to find me."Just like that, Vivian left.A few days later, Mom called me. On the other end of the line, she was sobbing uncontrollably. "Anton, do you really not want me as your mother anymore? You d

Anton's POVThe day Vivian appeared at the entrance of our base, I was handing out bread to a group of children. She had become much thinner, looking completely worn out from the journey here, and her face was pale."Anton." The moment she spoke, tears came streaming down her face. "Anton, I watched your interview. You did a really good job with the translation."I handed out the last piece of bread in my hands, then turned to look at her. "Go home, Vivian. No matter what you say, I'm not going back with you.""Anton, listen to me—" She stepped forward and tried to take my hand, but I stepped back and avoided her.Her hand froze in midair. "Anton, I love you. I just couldn't let go of Julian. We are already divorced, and the baby is gone now. Come home. We've all been so worried about you. Julian cries every day, blaming himself for what happened to you. And your mom checks the news from Dalton first thing every day, and she doesn't relax until she sees that you're safe—"I cut h

Third-Person POVAnton didn't give Vivian a chance to explain. He simply hung up the phone. The hand Vivian was holding the phone with slowly dropped, and she sank into the couch. She suddenly recalled that afternoon back in her second year of high school.Julian had shoved Anton in front of her and read the love letter aloud on his behalf.Anton turned his head away, his face flushed as he didn't dare look at her. All the students in their class gathered around, everyone waiting for her answer. No one knew how much she had struggled inside. In the end, she finally said quietly, "I like you too."Her words had been a lie from the very beginning. Julian was her first love. Since their first year of high school, they had secretly been together. Later, Julian learned that Anton liked her, so he wanted to break up with her.At the time, Anton was often bullied by his classmates because of his aphasia, and he was already in a poor mental state. Julian said Anton needed her more and as

Third-Person POVVivian called Anton 17 times, but every time, the mechanical voice said his phone was switched off. In the past, even when she and Anton had argued, he had never ignored her calls. And he had never simply turned off his phone as he did then.Julian paced anxiously around the hospital room and asked, "Vivian, did you get through to him?"She gripped her phone tightly and shook her head.Just then, Shirley Lind, Anton's mother, woke up in the hospital bed. When she found out he had left, she nearly passed out again.Julian immediately patted her back to comfort her. "Mom, stay calm. Anton is just throwing a tantrum. He'll be back soon."However, she slapped his hand away and yelled, "Fine! If he's left, so be it! I don't have a son like him!"Vivian sent a message to Anton. "Anton, your mom has woken up. Come back and apologize."An hour later, he still hadn't replied.Julian also tried sending him a message. "Anton, where did you go? We're all worried about you

Anton's POVThe next morning, I went to the station to complete my work. When I returned home, Julian and Vivian were there. Their marriage certificate was sitting on the table. He wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his chin in the crook of her neck. "Vivian, am I being too selfish? If it weren't for the baby, we would never have been able to get married… Anton is supposed to be your husband…"She smiled and kissed him on the cheek. "We'll just treat him a little better from now on."I walked in with my hands clenched, my expression twisted with anger. When they saw me, they quickly pulled apart.Julian stood up and quickly explained, "Anton, it's not what you think. I—"I ignored him and simply went back to my room to get my luggage.Vivian pushed the door open. When she saw my luggage, she immediately grabbed my hand. "Anton, where are you going? I'll leave right away. Please, don't do this—"I avoided her and dragged my suitcase toward the door. But she chased

Anton's POVMy throat constricted painfully. I forced myself to stay on my feet, my eyes welling up with tears. Finally, I walked out, grabbed the cup from the table, and smashed it hard against the floor. Shards scattered everywhere.Vivian stood up quickly, her voice frantic. "Anton…"Seeing me like this, Julian tried to stop me. "Anton, I'm sorry. Vivian's pregnancy was an accident. I never meant to fight you for her…"I was so furious that I could barely breathe, unable to utter a single word. All I could do was raise my hand and shove him away. I signed. "Why? Why did you make a fool of me? Why did everyone lie to me?""Enough! What are you gesturing about?" Mom shoved me aside. She yelled, "If you can't speak, just keep your mouth shut! Don't upset Vivian."Caught off guard, I stumbled and nearly fell.Crying, Vivian took out her phone. "Anton, I let you down. I'll make an appointment to get rid of the baby—"As soon as she said that, everyone rushed over to stop her. Jul
