Chapter 1

Autor: Perfect Timing
No wonder the graceful Natalie Pearson, the cold and stunning campus queen, Valerie Cross, and today's freshman, Annie Porter, had all inexplicably fallen for Blake Ramsey after going on a single date with me.

The comments kept scrolling, full of praise for Blake and insults aimed at me.

[The villain, Mack Sheldon, is still trying to fight it. He doesn't even know he's just a tool.]

[Right? The harder he tries to be charming, the more the female leads fall for Blake. I'm dying laughing.]

I drew a deep breath and forced down the shock and anger rising in my chest. If that was how it worked, then I wanted to see whether this system was truly unbeatable.

I refused to believe my charm fell short of his. No trashy system was going to win against an all-out pursuit.

Blake pulled out that dating booklet again to console me.

"Mack, that freshman didn't know what she had. She's the type who falls for whoever's new. Just keep putting yourself out there and you'll find your true love!"

This time, I shoved the booklet away and fixed my eyes straight ahead. "I don't want those. If I'm going after someone, I'm going for the hardest target there is."

Blake froze for a second, and a flash of barely contained glee passed through his eyes. "Mack, you're finally back on your feet! Who do you have in mind? I'll back you up all the way!"

I spoke the name slowly, one syllable at a time. "Helena Beaumont."

She was the youngest visiting professor at Bellingham University, ice-cold and untouchable. She was the dream girl of countless guys on campus.

If ordinary girls could all be manipulated by the system, then what about Helena, the youngest and most unattainable visiting professor at Bellingham? She was famously immune to every approach, hard or soft. Nothing came before her research.

Blake practically jumped out of his seat, nodding over and over. "Yes! Professor Beaumont is perfect! You can totally win her over!"

Of course, he was thrilled. The moment I won Helena over, she would become the biggest catch in his collection.

Over the next month, I pulled out every stop I had. Every morning at 6:00 am, I showed up outside Helena's lab with a fresh cup of pour-over coffee at the perfect temperature.

I stayed up night after night grinding through dense research papers, just so I could hold my own in one flawless exchange with her during class.

I kept up the image of a guy who was broke but unbreakable. My white dress shirts had been washed so many times they had gone pale, yet they were always spotless and neatly pressed.

Finally, Helena's wall of ice began to crack. That evening, she handed me a key inside the lab.

"This is the key to my apartment. Tomorrow's the weekend. Come over. There's a set of core data I want to go over with you privately."

Her eyes were calm but warm, filled with admiration she did not bother to hide.

My heart pounded against my ribs. I nodded, hard.

At that moment, I thought I had won. I thought my all-out pursuit had actually shattered that godforsaken system.

The next morning, I changed into a clean, sharp casual outfit and let myself into Helena's apartment with the key, full of anticipation. Yet the second the door swung open, every drop of blood in my body went cold.

Blake was lounging on Helena's couch in a pair of pajamas. She walked out of the kitchen carrying two mugs of warm milk.

The moment she saw me, the warmth drained from her face and her expression went ice-cold. "Who told you you could come in?"

Every last drop of color drained from Blake's face.I stepped forward and leaned close to his ear, speaking in a voice only the two of us could hear."Maybe what they fell for was the mask. But underneath that mask, I am still a real person with real value. You, on the other hand, the second that mask gets ripped away, all that is left is an empty, crude, lazy shell."We were never the same."I turned and walked away without another look at him. He stood there, rooted to the spot, unable to move.[Holy... Mack actually convinced me...][That hit different. He's absolutely right. If you're going to fake it, you'd better have the substance to back it up!][So what women really fell in love with was never any one person. They fell in love with the idea, the perfect symbol that checked every box in their fantasies. Whether it was Mack or Blake behind that symbol didn't even matter.][I get it now. I completely get it. Why should any man twist himself into a character just to impres

Over the next few days, Bellingham University descended into absolute chaos.Helena issued an official disciplinary notice to the entire department, condemning Blake's academic conduct and ordering him to retake three core courses.Natalie froze every bank card and supplementary card she had ever given Blake and sent people to collect every designer watch and pair of sneakers he had received as gifts.Valerie posted under her real name on the campus forum. The title read, 'Exposing the Parasite I Once Loved and Just How Good He Was at Pretending'.She never named him directly, but the screenshots of spending records she attached made it abundantly clear who she was talking about.Annie was the most ruthless of all. She used her authority as student council president to uncover multiple cases of fabricated materials in Blake's scholarship and honors applications, and she reported every last one of them directly to the university's disciplinary board.Blake went from the top of the

I ran up to Valerie while gasping for air and pointed at an empty water bottle lying on the ground a few feet behind her. A greedy look spread across my face. "Valerie... That bottle. Can I have it? I... I want to turn it in for the deposit."The entire gym went dead silent. Valerie and her teammates stood there with their mouths hanging open wide enough to fit a volleyball inside. What she used to find most irresistible about me was exactly this kind of image—broke but tough.I used to work part-time jobs like handing out flyers and washing dishes in the cafeteria for extra cash, and she had found all of it impossibly attractive. To her, I was like a blade of wild grass bending in the wind but never breaking.Yet now, in front of the entire school, I was standing barefoot, asking to pick up an empty bottle for pocket change. This was not toughness anymore. This was just shameless.[Fatal error! 'Scrappy underdog' persona module has detected behavior exceeding acceptable threshold

The next day, I showed up at the campus library after not washing my hair in three days. The strands hung in greasy clumps. I was also wearing a novelty T-shirt that read 'Larry's Sewer & Drain Cleaning' in bold block letters. This was Natalie's territory. As the pride of Bellingham's literature department, Natalie loved nothing more than spending her afternoons on the third floor of the library in the classics section, cradling a yellowed hardcover and losing herself in silence. What she admired most about me was the quiet, bookish refinement I carried, the aura of someone who had read more than he would ever say.The system had used that to gift Blake the persona of a brooding literary soul, someone too pure for the world around him. He could not even recite a Shakespeare sonnet from memory, but in Natalie's eyes, he was some otherworldly poet.I found Natalie sitting by the window. The afternoon sun edged her in gold, and she did look, for a moment, like she had stepped out of

"Blake Ramsey! You're a student. Why would you show up to class looking like this? And on top of that, you're trying to shift the blame onto Mack?"[System Warning! Helena Beaumont's affection filter toward the host is cracking! Charm conversion efficiency reduced by 30%!][Oh no! Mack's the one who looks terrible, so why is the male lead taking all the heat? Professor Beaumont, please stop yelling at him!][The male lead's image is completely destroyed in Professor Beaumont's eyes. I can't take this!]Blake had no answer. His mouth hung open, but nothing came out. That face, once smoothed over by the system's filter into something refined and flawless, now looked painfully ridiculous with its real acne scars and its panicked expression."I... I'm not..." He tried to defend himself, but it was useless.Helena did not want to hear it. She picked up her lecture notes from the podium and glanced at her watch. "You've truly disappointed me. The person standing here right now is nothi

Every morning, I woke up early to study and held the top rank in our year, yet the female leads saw Blake as an academic genius.Every day, I worked part-time jobs and maintained my image as a scrappy, hardworking underdog, yet the female leads saw Blake as some lovable angel.I ate slowly and carried myself with polished manners, yet the female leads saw Blake's crudeness as 'keeping it real'.Every bit of effort I put in, every good quality I radiated, all of it got drained by the system like a vampire and turned into Blake's golden halo. The whole time, I had never been competing with Blake. I had been feeding his bloated, revolting collection of admirers with my own flesh and blood. As long as I kept being perfect and kept pursuing women, the system would keep running nonstop. Blake would stay on his throne as the guy everyone worshipped, and I would be stuck forever as the villain everyone despised.I slowly walked out of my corner and looked at Blake's face, dotted with acn
