Chapter 3

Author: Elora Faye
I immediately sat up a little straighter.

"What do you mean? You mean he's actually gay?"

Mick nodded, looking like a tortoise retracting into its shell. "Cody seems to be really into you. He wants to meet you again."

My mind went blank. I then stared at my phone, vibrating with an incoming call from Cody. I felt so unnerved that I turned my phone off completely.

Some time later, in the middle of the night, someone hammered loudly at the door while I was in the shower.

I came out with a towel wrapped around my waist and dripped water all over the place as I went to answer the door, wondering what kind of idiot would be wandering around like a lost soul so late into the night.

As soon as the door was opened, I saw Kai standing there with his collar wide open and his collarbones on display.

He smelled faintly of alcohol, and the heat in his eyes nearly burned straight into my skull.

"Why are you here?" I asked, instinctively tightening my grip on the towel around my waist. I just couldn't forget the dirty things he'd whispered in my ear the last time I was at his place.

Kai narrowed his eyes and stepped closer toward me. His breath, warm with liquor, fanned across my neck as he demanded, "Why didn't you pick up my calls?"

I stepped backward and bumped into the door frame. My towel nearly dropped.

"My phone was off!"

Kai then grabbed my wrist. "You turned your phone off for hours? Trying to avoid me, huh?"

My heart began to race. My wet hair was still dripping, and the droplets fell onto my collarbone and slid down my chest.

Kai's eyes followed the droplets, his Adam's apple bobbing, looking so hungry as if he hadn't eaten for days.

"Why would I avoid you?" I shot back at him stubbornly.

The smell of smoke and alcohol on his body was making my brain go haywire. "Let go of me."

Kai didn't let go. Instead, he brought forward his other hand and pressed it into my side.

"It's my birthday today," he said. "Did you forget?"

"I didn't."

"Then, where's my gift?"

Kai then looked at the baseball cap on my bed.

"Don't even think about it," I warned. "I have to wear that cap every night if I want to sleep!"

Kai just pressed himself against me, and he nipped at my earlobe.

"I thought you promised to spend every birthday with me."

I swallowed hard. "Is it not enough having Liesel by your side?"

Kai's eyes darkened. He then grabbed my other hand and pushed both my hands above my head, pinning me against the wall. My towel immediately fell to the floor, the sudden coolness quickly dissipating as his warm body pressed flush against mine.

"Aiden," Kai said, his voice hoarse as he stared at my lips for the longest time ever before swallowing thickly. "If Cody can be your boyfriend, does that mean I have a chance too?"

My brain couldn't even fathom what he said and drew a blank. "What… What do you mean?"

Kai then reached down and grabbed me. "Still don't get it? I want to do it with you."

I was so shocked that I forgot to greet him properly.Kai was sitting at his desk, wearing a tailored suit and a pair of gold-rimmed glasses that made him look like a cold, heartless person.I hadn't seen him in years. And now, my ex-boyfriend was my new boss, and my paycheck was completely in his hands.I lowered my head and gave myself a good look. I looked like a typical corporate drone, having to smile and bend over backward for top management.Kai glanced at me, a hint of mockery in his eyes. "You're still like this even though it's been years since our breakup."But life had been punching me in the gut back then. I never had the chance to fight back in the first place. He lowered his head and started signing papers. I didn't dare to say a word because I was afraid of getting fired. So, I ended up standing in his office for the entire day. This was his form of revenge. This couldn't possibly be anything other than that.My colleagues' looks of envy eventually turned into

Antonio's face was stern, but he smiled subtly at me."Hey, Aiden. It's been a while. How have you been?""I've been alright," I answered.Antonio sat down on the couch and said, "Kai's stubborn. I'm here today to get you to convince him to come back. He's my best right-hand man, you see, and I don't want him to think that he's… not straight."He added, "You understand what I'm trying to say, don't you?""I can't do much to change his mind, Antonio. You—""Aiden," he said, cutting me off. "I helped you when your family ran into trouble back then. Now, it's time to return the favor. You shouldn't be encouraging Kai to do things he shouldn't be doing."He wasn't wrong. Antonio had indeed helped me out when my family went bankrupt. But now, even though I was independent and could talk back to him, I had no leverage. I was a nobody. Even when going out on dates, Kai was the one spending all the money and treating me to nice things. And of course, his money came from the gang.Ther

"Why did you bring Cody with you?" I asked Mick, giving him a pointed look. My lips were drawn in a tight line.Mick just shrugged. "I thought you were the one who said you owed him a meal anytime."I'd totally forgotten about that. I had to repay him for his favor, of course."Any place you'd like to go to for dinner?" I asked with a small smile."Your call. I'm fine with anything," Cody replied, smiling brightly at me.However, while we sat down for pizza, Cody wouldn't stop staring at me. It was like he was burning a hole through my head with his eyes.Mick excused himself as quickly as he could, and I felt a little restless after that."You seem busy. Why aren't you picking up your phone?" Cody asked, inching closer to me.His hot breath was right up against my ear, and he smelled fresh and citrusy like a lemon."I just wanted to explain… about last time.""It's fine. I was just trying to make a new friend," Cody replied.I sighed in relief. Cody was easy to hang out wit

That night, I dreamed of the streets in Wooklyn back when we were still kids.Kai was still new to the area and rarely ever spoke. I thought he was just acting cool.I caught a stray dog and tried to get it to go after Kai to tease him. However, the dog turned on me and went berserk, biting me in the butt instead.Kai immediately rushed over and grabbed a branch to chase it away. He managed to pry the dog's teeth from my butt, but in doing that, he got bitten on his leg and bled everywhere. He ended up needing stitches.I cried as I grabbed his hands in mine. "You can't die! I promise I won't bother you anymore!"Kai just chuckled and said, "I won't die. I like it when you bother me. I'll always protect you in the future."I couldn't believe that he still remembered that stupid promise he made such a long time ago.I woke up from the heat, covered in sweat.Kai's arm was draped around my waist. I carefully moved it aside, but it woke him up. He narrowed his eyes as he sat up, p
