Chapter 4

Author: Ethereal
On the top floor of the Vitale family’s new headquarters, a champagne cork struck the ceiling with a sharp pop.

Several of Matteo’s oldest friends raised their glasses, laughing until they could barely speak.

“You really do know what you’re doing, Matteo. Elena flew all the way back because none of us would answer her calls. She found out you’d called Nora instead, and now she’s still obediently packing at the apartment.”

“It’s called training,” another man said, swirling his drink. “If the future mistress of a family can’t control a little emotion, how is she supposed to hold her position?”

Matteo lounged against the leather sofa, one ankle resting over the opposite knee.

He said nothing. He only checked his watch.

Nora stood some distance away, reviewing the reception guest list. She poured his wine, then immediately returned to her work. Matteo did not give her a second look.

It was already past eight.

Even allowing for traffic, the movers should have finished. Elena should have arrived at headquarters by now.

The faint curve at the corner of Matteo’s mouth gradually disappeared.

He took out his phone and dialed my number.

“Still not done? Do you want me to send a few men to help?”

My voice did not answer.

An automated recording did.

WE’RE SORRY. THE NUMBER YOU HAVE DIALED IS NO LONGER IN SERVICE.

Matteo went still.

His friends continued talking and drinking around him, but the room suddenly seemed to recede from his senses.

Frowning, he ended the call and tried again.

The same precise, indifferent recording greeted him.

THE NUMBER YOU HAVE DIALED IS NO LONGER IN SERVICE.

“Sir?” Nora approached with her tablet. “Is something wrong?”

Matteo surged to his feet. She instinctively reached for his coat, and he snatched it away.

“Don’t touch my things.”

Nora froze.

He did not look at her again. He seized his keys and strode toward the private elevator.

As the doors closed, the smiles on his friends’ faces had not quite disappeared.

His black sports car shot from the underground garage and tore through the night.

The tendons stood out across Matteo’s hands as he gripped the wheel.

He told himself I had simply changed my number. Perhaps my phone had failed. Perhaps I was still angry about the calls.

That morning, I had been packing.

I had wanted the wedding for years. I loved him. How could I possibly have left?

He called again at a red light.

The recording began. He hung up before it finished.

The car stopped so sharply outside the apartment building that the tires screamed.

Matteo jumped out without turning off the engine. He ran upstairs and unlocked the door with his spare key.

“Elena, what the hell are you doing?”

His shout vanished into silence.

The four boxes were gone.

The clothes I wore every day were missing from the wardrobe. The expensive gowns he had bought me still hung untouched. My cosmetics and toothbrush had vanished from the bathroom. The blanket I always used was no longer folded on the sofa. The computer, drawings, and books had disappeared from the study.

Only his possessions remained.

Matteo stopped in the center of the living room, his breathing increasingly rough.

His eyes fixed on the dining table.

A plain silver ring lay on top of the cancellation agreement for our wedding venue.

He had bought the ring at a winter market five years earlier, before he became heir. It had cost almost nothing, but I had worn it every day since.

Now I had left it behind with everything else he had given me.

Matteo lifted the pages with an unsteady hand.

They were signed the previous night.

While his friends laughed about leaving my calls unanswered, I had already decided to cancel the wedding.

When I said I was waiting for the movers that morning, I had not surrendered. The boxes he imagined on their way to the Vitale estate were not even remaining in the same city.

He took out his phone again.

The call history was still there. My name filled the screen, one missed call after another.

He had watched them come in without answering.

Now he pressed my name.

THE NUMBER YOU HAVE DIALED IS NO LONGER IN SERVICE.

At the airport, a boarding announcement rang through the terminal.

“Flight 807 to New York is now boarding. Passengers should proceed to the gate with their travel documents.”

I extended the handle of my suitcase and joined the line for the jet bridge.

My old number was gone. The new phone in my hand contained a newly activated SIM and almost no contacts.

Before boarding, I opened a blank message and entered Matteo’s private number.

YOUR TRAINING WORKED, MATTEO.

FROM NOW ON, I WILL NEVER ASK WHERE YOU ARE, WHO YOU’RE WITH, OR WHETHER YOU COME HOME ALIVE.

THE ENGAGEMENT IS CANCELED.

WE’RE OVER. DON’T LOOK FOR ME.

I pressed send.

By the time the message showed as delivered, I was inside the aircraft.

The flight attendant closed the cabin door and asked everyone to switch their phones to airplane mode.

I looked through the window at the familiar city one final time.

Then I darkened the screen.

The aircraft eased away from the gate.

The countdown to my departure reached zero.

In the empty apartment, Matteo’s phone lit up.

He reached for it at once.

For a moment, his shoulders loosened. He opened the message, still expecting an apology.

Then he read it.

His eyes stopped on the words WHETHER YOU COME HOME ALIVE.

He stood motionless, the cancellation papers slipping from his hand.

Only hours earlier, he had promised his friends I would call before midnight.

Now he stared at the unfamiliar number, afraid that I would never answer him again.

My wedding was held in a riverfront hotel high above Manhattan.White roses flown in from Europe filled the ballroom. Members of the Rossi and Warren families gathered with their closest allies and friends. There were no tests and no demands for obedience.Gabriel gave me a wedding of unmistakable honor. When we exchanged rings, he placed a black access card and a trust document in my palm before everyone present. The card opened every Warren residence and office. The trust held independent assets he had already transferred into my name.Gabriel closed his fingers around mine.“There is no probationary period in my world, Elena. From today onward, every door I can enter will recognize you, too. You never have to prove you’re obedient enough before asking a question or seeing the truth.”Warm laughter rose from the guests.I looked into eyes that held respect rather than calculation, and my own eyes stung.Someone who truly loves you tries to quiet your fear. He does not exploit it unti

One week before the wedding, I had an invitation delivered to Matteo. Two hours later, one of his former friends called me. For the first time, his voice held genuine fear.“Elena, are you really marrying Gabriel Warren? Matteo went insane when he saw the invitation. He smashed every piece of furniture Nora selected for the estate. His hands are covered in blood.”I sat in the bridal salon while a designer arranged the train of my wedding gown. The woman in the mirror looked healthy, clear-eyed, and calm.“Then let him smash it,” I said. “He paid for it.”“He’s kneeling in front of the security door now. He keeps striking his head against it. He’s begging us to bring him to you, even if you only let him see you once.”Behind the caller, I could faintly hear Matteo shouting.“Elena, come home! I restored everything. The estate is yours. The family is yours. I’ll never use Nora to test you again.”His friend lowered his voice.“I’ve never seen him like this. He says he’ll give you the hi

Rain came down over New York in silver sheets. The design summit had ended successfully. Wearing an ivory gown, I left the exhibition hall surrounded by colleagues and members of the press. Camera flashes broke across the steps, recording the moment for the year’s emerging designer.I had barely reached the bottom stair when a man drenched to the skin broke through the outer security line and lunged toward me.“Elena!”His voice was so hoarse it barely sounded human.Security intercepted him at once. But when he saw me, his legs gave way. He fell heavily to his knees in the muddy water below the steps. It was Matteo. In one hand, he clutched a long-distance bus ticket that had nearly dissolved in the rain. His expensive suit was wrinkled and soaked through, his shoes caked with mud. Dark shadows lay beneath his eyes. The man who had once looked down on everyone as the untouchable Vitale heir was almost unrecognizable. He seized the hem of my gown, his eyes burning red.“Elena, I was wr

Only five million dollars remained in the main project account of the Vitale hotel company. The money was intended to pay suppliers and keep three renovation projects from collapsing. The chief financial officer rushed into Matteo’s office, white-faced.“Mr. Vitale, the password was changed. Half an hour ago, every dollar was transferred to an offshore account.”Matteo shot to his feet.“Who did it?”“The login record shows Nora Benetti’s credentials.”He called her immediately. Her phone was switched off.By the time security reached her apartment, it had been emptied. The wardrobe, safe, and desk contained nothing that belonged to her. After Matteo revoked her executive-floor privileges, Nora had continued working as though nothing had happened. She apologized to everyone and claimed to understand her place. In secret, she used a financial authorization that had not yet been canceled to move the remaining project funds.“Lock down the airports and harbors,” Matteo said, his eyes bloo

Three months later, in New York, morning sunlight poured through the windows of a high-rise conference room.I projected the final version of my hotel design onto the wall.“This is the logic underlying the project. The public areas preserve the original building’s historic structure. The private suites use a newly planned circulation system that protects guest privacy without obstructing normal operations.”I advanced to the final slide.“That concludes my proposal. Thank you.”The room remained quiet for two seconds. Then applause began, measured but warm. The man at the head of the table closed his folder. Gabriel Warren, founder and design director of Warren International Design, was famously exacting. A missing material notation or half a yard of wasted circulation space never escaped his attention. But he never needed to humiliate a designer to prove his authority.“Exceptional work, Elena.” His praise was direct and unreserved. “The space has strength without losing warmth.”He

The message reached Matteo while he stood in the empty apartment. He stared at the lines for a long moment, then drove his fist into the wall.“Fuck!”His knuckles split instantly. Blood ran over his hand and left a violent red mark on the white plaster. He did not stop to treat it. Again and again, he called the number that had sent the message. The first call went unanswered. The second found the phone switched off. By the third, there was only a cold recorded announcement.Matteo refused to believe it.He could not believe that Elena—the woman who had once panicked when his convoy arrived ten minutes late, the woman whose eyes had always followed him—could leave so completely. With blood trembling on his fingers, he called a private contact at the airport.“Find Elena Rossi. Check every flight leaving the city tonight. I want to know where she went.”The man on the other end hesitated. Passenger records were not supposed to be handed over casually. But Matteo Vitale was still the he
