Chapter 3

Author: Ethereal
The next morning, I heard the lock turn.

Matteo entered just as I finished sealing the final cardboard box. Nora followed him, carrying several documents bound for the new headquarters.

They both stopped in the entryway when they saw the four neatly packed boxes in the living room.

Matteo had waited all night for my call of surrender. The impatience shadowing his face visibly eased when he saw the boxes.

Clearly, he thought my resolve the night before had been an act. He assumed I had come home, obediently packed my things, and was now desperate to move into the Vitale estate and claim the position he had approved for me.

“All right. You can stop sulking.”

He walked over and nudged one of the boxes with the toe of his polished shoe.

“As long as you stop throwing the entire family into chaos over every little concern, your place as Mrs. Vitale is secure. If you can keep this up, I’ll call you myself after the next meeting. Move everything to the estate today.”

Nora stood behind him, clutching a black leather folder. Her phone rested on top, its screen facing up.

“Please don’t be angry with Mr. Vitale about the other night, Miss Rossi. He only wanted you to understand that the fiancée of a family heir must remain composed. He called me because he knew I wouldn’t panic or keep asking questions. Once he knows you can do the same, he’ll call you too.”

She sounded sincere. Her fingertip moved slowly back and forth along the edge of her phone.

Six months ago, hearing her explain why she deserved his reassurance would have broken my control. I would have demanded to know why Matteo had called her instead of me. I would have reminded him that I was his fiancée, the one who had spent the night afraid he might never come home.

Now the two of them merely looked absurd.

I cut through a strip of packing tape and stood.

“Of course. I’m not angry. You should go on to headquarters. I’ll stay here and wait for the moving company.”

Matteo was plainly pleased by my obedience.

For the first time in weeks, he reached out as if to ruffle my hair the way he once had. I tilted my head and avoided his hand.

His fingers paused in midair. A moment later, he interpreted the resistance as my final trace of petulance and withdrew his hand in a good mood.

“That’s my good girl. Nora and I need to pick up a harbor contract from headquarters. There’s an opening reception on the executive floor tonight, and representatives from several partner families will be there.”

He adjusted one cuff link.

“Come straight over once the movers finish. Don’t be late, and don’t embarrass me in front of the elders again.”

“All right,” I answered softly.

Nora left first with the files. At the door, Matteo looked back at me one final time. When he saw me standing quietly beside the boxes, the last trace of suspicion left his eyes.

The door shut. Their footsteps faded down the hall.

The smile disappeared from my face.

I took out my phone and called an international shipping company.

“You can come now. Four boxes, all bound for New York. The computer and design portfolios need reinforced packaging. Insure everything at the highest level.”

I truly was moving.

But the only things coming with me were the computer I needed to earn a living, the design work I had created over the years, and the possessions that were genuinely mine.

I left every gown, piece of jewelry, and designer handbag Matteo had given me in the wardrobe. I did not take a single item of furniture he had purchased during our five years together.

In the study, I picked up a thin stack of papers from the desk.

On top was the cancellation agreement for our wedding venue, completed late the previous night. Beneath it were confirmations canceling the dress, guest accommodations, and family banquet.

The wedding had been scheduled for the following month. Under the contracts, I owed a substantial cancellation fee.

I paid it willingly.

The shredder started with a harsh mechanical whine. The wedding plans printed with Matteo’s name and mine disappeared between the rollers and emerged as strips that could never be reassembled.

Half an hour later, the shipping crew took the four boxes.

The apartment was finally empty.

I switched off the power, extended the handle of my single black suitcase, and looked one last time at the place where I had spent five years.

Then I closed the door and left the keys in the mailbox.

Matteo believed I was moving myself into the life he had permitted me to enter.

But as the evening sun spread across the elevated highway, I was already in a cab headed for the airport.

My phone lit up.

FIVE HOURS UNTIL DEPARTURE.

My wedding was held in a riverfront hotel high above Manhattan.White roses flown in from Europe filled the ballroom. Members of the Rossi and Warren families gathered with their closest allies and friends. There were no tests and no demands for obedience.Gabriel gave me a wedding of unmistakable honor. When we exchanged rings, he placed a black access card and a trust document in my palm before everyone present. The card opened every Warren residence and office. The trust held independent assets he had already transferred into my name.Gabriel closed his fingers around mine.“There is no probationary period in my world, Elena. From today onward, every door I can enter will recognize you, too. You never have to prove you’re obedient enough before asking a question or seeing the truth.”Warm laughter rose from the guests.I looked into eyes that held respect rather than calculation, and my own eyes stung.Someone who truly loves you tries to quiet your fear. He does not exploit it unti

One week before the wedding, I had an invitation delivered to Matteo. Two hours later, one of his former friends called me. For the first time, his voice held genuine fear.“Elena, are you really marrying Gabriel Warren? Matteo went insane when he saw the invitation. He smashed every piece of furniture Nora selected for the estate. His hands are covered in blood.”I sat in the bridal salon while a designer arranged the train of my wedding gown. The woman in the mirror looked healthy, clear-eyed, and calm.“Then let him smash it,” I said. “He paid for it.”“He’s kneeling in front of the security door now. He keeps striking his head against it. He’s begging us to bring him to you, even if you only let him see you once.”Behind the caller, I could faintly hear Matteo shouting.“Elena, come home! I restored everything. The estate is yours. The family is yours. I’ll never use Nora to test you again.”His friend lowered his voice.“I’ve never seen him like this. He says he’ll give you the hi

Rain came down over New York in silver sheets. The design summit had ended successfully. Wearing an ivory gown, I left the exhibition hall surrounded by colleagues and members of the press. Camera flashes broke across the steps, recording the moment for the year’s emerging designer.I had barely reached the bottom stair when a man drenched to the skin broke through the outer security line and lunged toward me.“Elena!”His voice was so hoarse it barely sounded human.Security intercepted him at once. But when he saw me, his legs gave way. He fell heavily to his knees in the muddy water below the steps. It was Matteo. In one hand, he clutched a long-distance bus ticket that had nearly dissolved in the rain. His expensive suit was wrinkled and soaked through, his shoes caked with mud. Dark shadows lay beneath his eyes. The man who had once looked down on everyone as the untouchable Vitale heir was almost unrecognizable. He seized the hem of my gown, his eyes burning red.“Elena, I was wr

Only five million dollars remained in the main project account of the Vitale hotel company. The money was intended to pay suppliers and keep three renovation projects from collapsing. The chief financial officer rushed into Matteo’s office, white-faced.“Mr. Vitale, the password was changed. Half an hour ago, every dollar was transferred to an offshore account.”Matteo shot to his feet.“Who did it?”“The login record shows Nora Benetti’s credentials.”He called her immediately. Her phone was switched off.By the time security reached her apartment, it had been emptied. The wardrobe, safe, and desk contained nothing that belonged to her. After Matteo revoked her executive-floor privileges, Nora had continued working as though nothing had happened. She apologized to everyone and claimed to understand her place. In secret, she used a financial authorization that had not yet been canceled to move the remaining project funds.“Lock down the airports and harbors,” Matteo said, his eyes bloo

Three months later, in New York, morning sunlight poured through the windows of a high-rise conference room.I projected the final version of my hotel design onto the wall.“This is the logic underlying the project. The public areas preserve the original building’s historic structure. The private suites use a newly planned circulation system that protects guest privacy without obstructing normal operations.”I advanced to the final slide.“That concludes my proposal. Thank you.”The room remained quiet for two seconds. Then applause began, measured but warm. The man at the head of the table closed his folder. Gabriel Warren, founder and design director of Warren International Design, was famously exacting. A missing material notation or half a yard of wasted circulation space never escaped his attention. But he never needed to humiliate a designer to prove his authority.“Exceptional work, Elena.” His praise was direct and unreserved. “The space has strength without losing warmth.”He

The message reached Matteo while he stood in the empty apartment. He stared at the lines for a long moment, then drove his fist into the wall.“Fuck!”His knuckles split instantly. Blood ran over his hand and left a violent red mark on the white plaster. He did not stop to treat it. Again and again, he called the number that had sent the message. The first call went unanswered. The second found the phone switched off. By the third, there was only a cold recorded announcement.Matteo refused to believe it.He could not believe that Elena—the woman who had once panicked when his convoy arrived ten minutes late, the woman whose eyes had always followed him—could leave so completely. With blood trembling on his fingers, he called a private contact at the airport.“Find Elena Rossi. Check every flight leaving the city tonight. I want to know where she went.”The man on the other end hesitated. Passenger records were not supposed to be handed over casually. But Matteo Vitale was still the he
