Chapter 1

Author: Willow·hai
My parents, Richard and Helena Hale, were the Alpha and Luna of the Westmere pack.

I was their only daughter, and they'd spoiled me rotten from the start.

My wolf awakened when I was six. My father spread the news through the whole pack right away. He couldn't wait to name me Alpha heir, and he started giving me pack business to handle.

But I could never sit still. I'd much rather be out on the training grounds than buried in pages of tiny print.

One day, while I was sneaking out, I ran smack into a young werewolf dressed in rags.

That was the first time I met Evan.

It was also how I learned that my late uncle had left behind a son.

Under pack law, once a new Alpha was chosen, every other wolf with Alpha blood had to leave the pack and fend for themselves.

When my uncle died young and my father became Alpha, he didn't have the heart to throw Evan out, so he let him stay.

But once I was named Alpha heir and my parents went off traveling, it was up to me whether Evan could stay.

He seemed shy. He hardly dared to speak to me, afraid I'd lose my temper.

I felt bad for him. So I promised to behave and take my pack duties seriously. In return, Evan could stay with me.

He treasured that chance.

Every morning before sunrise, he had all my paperwork organized. He even took care of all the social obligations I couldn't be bothered with, and he was great at it.

Before long, he was handling my paperwork whenever I went out to have fun and keeping the pack in line whenever I was training.

When my father found out, he called me in and gave me a lecture. I just smiled sweetly at him.

"Evan's good at the boring stuff, and I'm good at fighting. That's just smart teamwork!"

My father never could say no to me. He gave in and made Evan my assistant, letting him handle pack affairs on my behalf.

At the start of every year, I would evaluate Evan's performance over the past year and decide whether he could keep his position. If he failed, he'd be kicked out of the pack.

Evan was a sensitive kid back then. The moment he heard that, he tensed up.

My father laughed to put him at ease.

"Relax, it's just a formality. Lorelei's counting on you so she can slack off. She'd never have the heart to send you away."

For the next 13 years, Evan submitted his annual report to me at the start of every year.

Every time, I fought to stay awake, flipped through a few pages, and stamped it with my seal.

Evan would look half amused and half exasperated.

"You trust me that much? Aren't you afraid I'll sell you out?"

I'd sprawl across the desk, eyes half closed, and wave him off.

"Come on, it's you and me. I picked you myself!"

Over time, anyone in the pack with a problem went to Evan first.

I was happy to let them.

13 years went by in a blink.

Evan fell in love with Winona, the Emberwind Alpha's daughter.

But Victor didn't think Evan's status was high enough for his daughter, so he kept pushing Winona to give him up.

When Evan came to beg me for help, I was out on the training grounds doing some target practice.

I hit the target and turned to look at him.

"You really want to be with Winona? Like, mates-for-life serious?"

He turned red and nodded.

I dragged him straight to my father. I whined and pleaded and threw a full-blown tantrum until he agreed to adopt Evan. Then I convinced him to go to the Emberwind pack himself and arrange the match.

After one meeting with my father, Victor agreed to the match on the spot.

To boost Evan's status, I signed over three of Westmere's territories to him. And to welcome Winona into the pack, I gave her a villa outright.

After that, Winona's attitude toward me completely changed.

She brought me homemade sparkling drinks and went weapon shopping with me. She had zero interest in training, but she still insisted on keeping me company.

On the day of the mating ceremony, she stopped to talk to me right before she stepped up to the altar.

"Lorelei, I never had a sister. From now on, you're the closest thing I've got."

I was so happy that I gave her my favorite custom-made bracelet.

Early the next morning, I brought her some Almas caviar as a treat.

Evan wasn't there. She was alone.

When she saw me, she smiled and came over to take my hand.

But the moment we were inside, she let go, and her smile slowly faded.

"Lorelei.

"Aren't you tired of this whole sister act yet?"

When Winona found out Evan had come to see me, she and Evan had a huge fight that turned physical. She hurled insults at him, clawing and hitting him.Evan never once fought back.He waited until she'd worn herself out. Only then did he speak. "Winona, let's break the mate bond."Winona's eyes went wide."Are you serious?"Evan nodded.Winona sneered."Fine. But get one thing straight. I'm the one dumping you. Look at yourself now. How could you be good enough for me?"They went to the altar that same day. When the ceremony began, Winona suddenly hesitated."Evan, what I said earlier was too harsh. I shouldn't have hit you either. Can we please not break the bond?"Winona hadn't been having an easy time lately either.Victor had a lot of children. She was just one of them, and not a favorite.Being forced to return to her own pack with a husband in tow had humiliated Victor, and he'd been treating her even worse because of it.That was why she couldn't stop taking it out on Evan.Deep

Not long after Winona left, Soren told me Evan wanted to see me.My father had banned him from Westmere, so he had to wait outside our borders.I didn't even look up."No."Night fell, and the day's training was over.As I left the training grounds, Soren hesitated before he spoke. "Ms. Hale, Evan's still waiting out there for you."It poured this afternoon. He's soaked through, and he still hasn't left."I wasn't surprised at all.If he wanted to see me that badly, he wasn't going to give up after one day.I crossed the border. The moment Evan saw me, he hurried over."Lorelei, I knew..."Before he could finish, he let out a huge sneeze."Achoo..."He coughed. "I knew you'd come see me."I frowned at how pale he was."Once your wolf awakens, your body gets stronger. Even if your wolf is at the lowest rank, a little rain shouldn't make you this sick."His dull eyes suddenly lit up."Lorelei, you still care about me?"I didn't answer.Evan understood what my silence meant. He lowered hi

That morning, I was out on the training grounds, practicing my shooting.Soren walked in with an odd look on his face."Ms. Hale, you should come to the reception room. Alpha Corwin Stone of the Ironcrest pack is here with his son, Gareth. They'd like to see you."My heart skipped a beat.Winona had mentioned Gareth not long ago.But after the beating she'd just taken, you'd think she would lie low for a while.I set my gun aside, sat down, and wiped the sweat from my face."We barely have any dealings with Ironcrest. Did they say why they're here?"Soren answered, "It's Winona's doing."I wanted to send her away, but I couldn't exactly make a scene in front of the Ironcrest wolves."I nodded."Got it."I got up and headed out.Soren trailed after me."Ms. Hale, if you don't want to see them, I can say you're out."I laughed softly."They've come all the way to our door. How would it look if I hid from them?"Besides, I want to see what trick Winona's pulling now."I walked into the re

Evan went quiet. He waited until the Betas and Elders had left, then came over to me."Lorelei, there's something I want to say to you."I paused as I was getting up, then sat back down."Okay. Go ahead."We'd had each other's backs for 13 years, after all. I wasn't going to write off our entire history because of one day.Evan talked Winona into leaving. That left just the two of us in the meeting room. His voice was strained. "Lorelei, I admit it. I overlooked everything you've done for the pack."But I've put in just as much as you have."Besides, nobody knows this job better than I do. If you replace me now with a new assistant, they'll need time to learn the ropes and settle in. That's definitely not your best option."I raised an eyebrow."You're saying there are things only you can do?"He nodded."I'm not exaggerating."I'm the one who rebuilt our ties with the Stillwater and Sunridge packs."The wolves handling Westmere's purchasing right now? I trained them. They only listen

Winona spoke up right away. "What accounts?"In all his years as assistant, Evan never did a single thing to harm this pack!"I smiled."Relax. Good work gets rewarded. But mistakes and debts have to be dealt with too."Evan looked a little hurt."Lorelei, whatever you think of me, I've given Westmere everything I had for 13 years. All I ever wanted was to make it better."I nodded."I know. But we still need to settle the accounts."Following my instructions, Soren had put together a summary of Evan's accounts over the years. At a glance, the numbers looked great.I had to give him that. Evan really had poured himself into his work for Westmere over the years.Last year, the pack's net profit was up five percent over the year before.Even Stillwater and Sunridge, the two packs we had the most strained relations with, had resumed normal trade with us.He'd also resolved last year's three toughest territorial issues.I set the first ledger down."Evan did good work. Ten percent of the a

When I finished, the room went dead silent.Evan stared at me in disbelief. His face darkened."Lorelei, this is not the time for one of your tantrums."Winona crossed her arms."All this because I said a few things to you the other day? Seriously?"You have to make a scene on a day this important? You really think you call all the shots in Westmere?"Everyone here knows who's been holding Westmere together all these years. If I were you, I'd apologize to Evan right now, before you embarrass yourself."I didn't say anything. She had a point. I'd gone out of my way to support him, but Evan's own talent had also kept him in the position.Soren didn't defend me. Instead, he turned to Evan."Evan, do you honestly believe Ms. Hale's position as heir is nothing but an empty title?"Evan closed his eyes for a moment."What do you all think? Has Lorelei done a single thing for this pack all these years?"Her Alpha seal gets used once a year, right about now. What else is it good for?"Soren sh
