Chapter 4

Author: Willow·hai
Winona was very pleased with herself over the next few days.

I'd sent Audrey away for a little break, but Winona thought I'd actually sent her off to be punished.

She wasted no time replacing Westmere's key staff with her own relatives.

Then she strutted into my private vault and helped herself.

I shut my door and pretended I didn't know.

But she still wouldn't leave me alone.

She showed up at my room with a few people and announced that since I'd be moving in with my mate sooner or later, there was no need for me to hog such a big room.

It had the best view in the place, she said. It would be perfect for the kids she and Evan would have someday.

I couldn't be bothered to fight her, so I just handed it over.

What Winona didn't know was that everything she was taking now, she'd pay back several times over.

On New Year's morning, Evan showed up right on time.

He'd brought a new contract.

"Lorelei, sign this.

"Like we agreed, this is the last time. I've replaced the usual annual contract with one that lasts a lifetime.

"If you want to keep playing this game, I'll let you keep your title as Alpha heir until you're mated."

I glanced at the contract, then looked up at him.

"Is that really what you think? That every year when I stamp your review, you're just humoring me?"

Evan's face darkened.

"Lorelei, do you really want me to spell it out?

"I'm the one who's run Westmere all these years. You've never handled a single thing. Everyone knows it."

Winona, right behind him, laughed.

"Evan only plays this silly game with you because he thinks of you as his little sister. You're an adult now. Time to face reality.

"Don't push your luck just because Evan has a soft spot for you."

She shoved the contract in front of me.

"Hurry up and sign. Unlike you, some of us have real work to do."

I kept my voice even. "Let's wait until everyone's here."

Before long, all 11 of Westmere's Elders and all 129 managers had arrived.

Evan looked a little surprised, but he quickly found an explanation that suited him.

"Lorelei's finally growing up. She knows today is the official handover of power. It's good to have all the pack's leaders here to witness it."

Soren, the Beta leading the group, came over carrying my seal and a roster.

"Ms. Hale, per the contract, Evan's term as assistant has ended.

"Please choose your assistant for this year."

Winona's smile froze.

Evan frowned.

"Soren, what are you talking about?"

Soren didn't even look at him.

There were more than 100 wolves in that room, and every one of them was looking at me.

Evan thought he was the only one who'd done anything for the pack all these years. But I had also earned the respect of the Betas and Elders on my own merits.

Soren went on, "Ms. Hale, the candidates are all waiting outside for your decision."

Evan rushed up to me.

"What candidates? Why didn't I know about this?"

I opened the roster, picked up a pen, and crossed out Evan's name.

"You said you were only playing along all these years, didn't you?

"Well, you won't have to anymore."

When Winona found out Evan had come to see me, she and Evan had a huge fight that turned physical. She hurled insults at him, clawing and hitting him.Evan never once fought back.He waited until she'd worn herself out. Only then did he speak. "Winona, let's break the mate bond."Winona's eyes went wide."Are you serious?"Evan nodded.Winona sneered."Fine. But get one thing straight. I'm the one dumping you. Look at yourself now. How could you be good enough for me?"They went to the altar that same day. When the ceremony began, Winona suddenly hesitated."Evan, what I said earlier was too harsh. I shouldn't have hit you either. Can we please not break the bond?"Winona hadn't been having an easy time lately either.Victor had a lot of children. She was just one of them, and not a favorite.Being forced to return to her own pack with a husband in tow had humiliated Victor, and he'd been treating her even worse because of it.That was why she couldn't stop taking it out on Evan.Deep

Not long after Winona left, Soren told me Evan wanted to see me.My father had banned him from Westmere, so he had to wait outside our borders.I didn't even look up."No."Night fell, and the day's training was over.As I left the training grounds, Soren hesitated before he spoke. "Ms. Hale, Evan's still waiting out there for you."It poured this afternoon. He's soaked through, and he still hasn't left."I wasn't surprised at all.If he wanted to see me that badly, he wasn't going to give up after one day.I crossed the border. The moment Evan saw me, he hurried over."Lorelei, I knew..."Before he could finish, he let out a huge sneeze."Achoo..."He coughed. "I knew you'd come see me."I frowned at how pale he was."Once your wolf awakens, your body gets stronger. Even if your wolf is at the lowest rank, a little rain shouldn't make you this sick."His dull eyes suddenly lit up."Lorelei, you still care about me?"I didn't answer.Evan understood what my silence meant. He lowered hi

That morning, I was out on the training grounds, practicing my shooting.Soren walked in with an odd look on his face."Ms. Hale, you should come to the reception room. Alpha Corwin Stone of the Ironcrest pack is here with his son, Gareth. They'd like to see you."My heart skipped a beat.Winona had mentioned Gareth not long ago.But after the beating she'd just taken, you'd think she would lie low for a while.I set my gun aside, sat down, and wiped the sweat from my face."We barely have any dealings with Ironcrest. Did they say why they're here?"Soren answered, "It's Winona's doing."I wanted to send her away, but I couldn't exactly make a scene in front of the Ironcrest wolves."I nodded."Got it."I got up and headed out.Soren trailed after me."Ms. Hale, if you don't want to see them, I can say you're out."I laughed softly."They've come all the way to our door. How would it look if I hid from them?"Besides, I want to see what trick Winona's pulling now."I walked into the re

Evan went quiet. He waited until the Betas and Elders had left, then came over to me."Lorelei, there's something I want to say to you."I paused as I was getting up, then sat back down."Okay. Go ahead."We'd had each other's backs for 13 years, after all. I wasn't going to write off our entire history because of one day.Evan talked Winona into leaving. That left just the two of us in the meeting room. His voice was strained. "Lorelei, I admit it. I overlooked everything you've done for the pack."But I've put in just as much as you have."Besides, nobody knows this job better than I do. If you replace me now with a new assistant, they'll need time to learn the ropes and settle in. That's definitely not your best option."I raised an eyebrow."You're saying there are things only you can do?"He nodded."I'm not exaggerating."I'm the one who rebuilt our ties with the Stillwater and Sunridge packs."The wolves handling Westmere's purchasing right now? I trained them. They only listen

Winona spoke up right away. "What accounts?"In all his years as assistant, Evan never did a single thing to harm this pack!"I smiled."Relax. Good work gets rewarded. But mistakes and debts have to be dealt with too."Evan looked a little hurt."Lorelei, whatever you think of me, I've given Westmere everything I had for 13 years. All I ever wanted was to make it better."I nodded."I know. But we still need to settle the accounts."Following my instructions, Soren had put together a summary of Evan's accounts over the years. At a glance, the numbers looked great.I had to give him that. Evan really had poured himself into his work for Westmere over the years.Last year, the pack's net profit was up five percent over the year before.Even Stillwater and Sunridge, the two packs we had the most strained relations with, had resumed normal trade with us.He'd also resolved last year's three toughest territorial issues.I set the first ledger down."Evan did good work. Ten percent of the a

When I finished, the room went dead silent.Evan stared at me in disbelief. His face darkened."Lorelei, this is not the time for one of your tantrums."Winona crossed her arms."All this because I said a few things to you the other day? Seriously?"You have to make a scene on a day this important? You really think you call all the shots in Westmere?"Everyone here knows who's been holding Westmere together all these years. If I were you, I'd apologize to Evan right now, before you embarrass yourself."I didn't say anything. She had a point. I'd gone out of my way to support him, but Evan's own talent had also kept him in the position.Soren didn't defend me. Instead, he turned to Evan."Evan, do you honestly believe Ms. Hale's position as heir is nothing but an empty title?"Evan closed his eyes for a moment."What do you all think? Has Lorelei done a single thing for this pack all these years?"Her Alpha seal gets used once a year, right about now. What else is it good for?"Soren sh
