Chapter 3

Author: richer
“Can’t you stop getting jealous over nothing?”

“Otherwise, I won’t dare tell anyone that you’re my future mate.”

Every one carried that familiar, slightly condescending tone of reprimand.

As if I had done something wrong again.

As if I were making a fuss over nothing again.

As if I were supposed to lower my head and apologize again.

I read them twice.

Then I smiled.

He had no idea that just moment, I had already decided that I would no longer stay behind to become a warrior with him.

Instead, I would go to the Northern Pack and become a herbalist Wolf.

It was the most decisive decision I had ever made in my life.

When I returned home, I began clearing out everything that reminded me of him.

A large stack of movie ticket stubs, a jar filled with folded paper stars, and more than a dozen birthday cards.

His handwriting on the cards had been crooked and childish. The way he addressed me had changed from “Monica” to “Sweetheart.”

I put everything into a large cardboard box.

On the bedside table was a little ceramic figurine he had made himself—a badly shaped little wolf.

At the time, he had said it looked like me.

I held the little wolf in my hand for two seconds.

Then I threw it into the box, too.

The cardboard box was almost full.

I didn’t seal it right away.

I could tell a story about every single thing inside.

That jar of handmade stars was because of a legend in our pack.

It was said that couples who collected a thousand handmade stars would receive the Moon Goddess’s blessing and never be separated.

So he had stayed up for several nights, proudly presenting the jar of stars to me.

And that moonstone necklace had been his prize for winning the Spring Hunt Festival.

In front of the entire pack, he had put it around my neck himself.

The box was filled to the brim with traces of him.

Fifteen years of traces, from the age of three to eighteen.

It was also my entire youth.

My phone suddenly rang.

It wasn’t a call.

It was a notification from a social media platform.

I opened it and saw that Sophia had just posted something.

There were two pictures.

The first showed a hotel room, with dim lighting and white sheets.

The second was a close-up of a wristwatch.

I recognized the watch at a glance.

I had saved three months of living expenses to buy it for Edward’s birthday last year.

He had loved it when he tried it on.

He had hugged me tightly and said, “This is my favorite birthday present this year.”

Sophia captioned the post:

“He said he was drunk and insisted that I take him to the hotel. I’m exhausted.”

A flood of comments followed.

“May the Moon Goddess bless you two! You make such a perfect match!”

I stared at the photos for a few seconds.

Then I walked back to the cardboard box and wrapped the sealing tape around it three times.

I carried it downstairs and threw it into the trash bin outside the villa.

When it landed inside, it made a dull thud.

Then everything went silent.

For the next few days, Edward didn’t call me once.

He didn’t send me a single message either.

And I was more than happy to enjoy the peace and quiet.

A week later, Ron messaged me privately, inviting me to attend his birthday party.

He was Edward’s best friend.

The two of them had been inseparable since childhood.

I could roughly guess what he wanted.

I told him I was busy and didn’t have time.

“You don’t love me anymore?” he asked.I thought for a moment before saying, “Edward, do you remember the Full Moon Festival? You asked me if you could dance the opening dance with Sophia. I didn’t argue or make a scene. I simply stepped aside. You were surprised because you thought I would react the way I always had—get angry, and then forgive you after you coaxed me with a few words.”His lips moved, but he said nothing.“You always said I was jealous over nothing, that I had a terrible temper, that I was domineering and unreasonable. You said I couldn’t live without you, and that even if the sky fell, I would never be the one to ask for a breakup.” I looked into his eyes. “You were right. The old me really couldn’t live without you. I had known you since I was three. You were in every memory I had. I thought that was love, but it was actually just a habit.”“Monica…”“You don’t regret losing me,” I said softly. “You regret losing someone who would always wait for you, always forgive

  • He Thought I’d Never Leave, Until I Became the Northern Pack’s Herbalist Wolf   Chapter 10

Edward found the Northern Pack in the spring, a year later.Spring came late in the North. The snow had not completely melted yet, and the wind carried a damp chill. That day, I was turning the soil in the herb garden with my apprentices when I heard a commotion at the entrance. A werewolf called out, “herbalist Wolf Monica, someone is here to see you!”I straightened up and brushed the dirt from my hands. Then I saw Edward. He stood in the snow, wearing a trench coat that was clearly too thin for the weather. His face was pale from the cold, and his lips were cracked. He had lost a lot of weight, and his eyes were terribly red, as if he had not slept well in a long time. The Edward who had once been so full of confidence at the Full Moon Festival now looked like a lost traveler. When he saw me, he stopped for a moment before hurrying toward me.“Monica.”His voice was so hoarse that it was almost unrecognizable.I stood where I was without moving. When he reached me, he tried to pull

She paused, her voice becoming even quieter.“I thought you had feelings for me…”Edward looked at her and suddenly felt irritated. His mind was filled with Monica.Monica’s hand when she handed him his drink. The way Monica lowered her head when she fastened his tie clip for him.And Monica’s back as she walked away without looking back.“Sophia, did you misunderstand something?”“I asked you to have meals with me because the assistance program required me to fill out feedback forms.”“I took walks with you because the pack requires those providing assistance to communicate with their assigned recipients regularly.”He spoke each word slowly.“As for shopping and going to the movies, that’s because Monica wasn’t around and I was bored.”Sophia’s face went completely white.“What did you think there was between us?”Edward continued, his tone growing increasingly impatient.“You know what your family situation is, and you know what mine is. Don’t you?”“The tie clip I casually replaced

Edward wanted to say no, but his throat felt as though something was blocking it, and no words would come out.His phone was still in his hand. The screen lit up, then went dark. Then lit up again, then went dark.Yet there was still no message from her.“Go ahead and call her.”Edward’s mother took out her phone, found Monica’s number, and dialed.Monica answered.“Please wish Edward a happy birthday for me.”“And tell him…”“This is the last time.”The call ended.Edward’s mother was still holding the phone to her ear, frozen in place.“Mom, what did Monica say?”Seeing his mother’s expression, Edward suddenly had a bad feeling. His mother turned to him, her lips moving slightly.“Monica said… happy birthday.”“She also said this is the last time.”The last time.He stood frozen in place, his mind buzzing. What did she mean by “the last time”?“Impossible!”“Mom, you must have heard her wrong. Call her again!”Edward’s mother looked at him as if she wanted to say something. In the en

Edward took a selfie and posted another update. That afternoon, he posted another one.It was a photo from his birthday the year before.Monica was in the photo too, standing beside him with a cake in her hands, her eyes curved into a bright smile. Some people commented, “Such a nostalgic photo.”Others said, “Monica is in it too!”Edward didn’t reply. He just wanted Monica to see it.But by evening, Monica’s profile picture remained quietly in his contact list, without a single red notification dot.Edward kept turning his phone over and over in his hands. Finally, he tossed it onto the sofa and leaned heavily back into the cushions.A wave of irritation surged through him.But his pride wouldn’t allow him to lower his head first. He had already given in.He had posted two updates. His meaning couldn’t have been any clearer. If Monica was smart, she should know what to do.If she couldn’t even understand that, then she was doing it deliberately.Edward let out a cold snort. It was fin

Edward sat in the private room, his fingers unconsciously tapping twice against the tabletop. When Monica left, she hadn’t even looked back.He stared at the closed door for several seconds, and a fleeting sense of unease crossed his heart.“Is Monica okay?” Ron came over and asked.Edward withdrew his gaze and picked up the glass of juice on the table, taking a sip.“She’s fine. She’s always like that.”“Aren’t you going to check on her?”“What’s there to check on?”Edward put down his glass, a look of disdain crossing his face.“She’s not a little kid anymore. If she wants to leave, let her.”His tone was casual, as if he were talking about something completely insignificant.Or perhaps he was saying it to convince himself.Ron opened his mouth, but said nothing more. The private room soon became lively again, with waves of laughter rising one after another.Edward laughed along, chatting with the people beside him and occasionally exchanging a glance with Sophia. But he still felt u
