Chapter 4

Author: richer
“Monica, you have to come. Otherwise, it means you don’t consider me a friend.”

I really couldn’t refuse any longer, so at five that afternoon, I arrived outside the private room.

I was about to knock when I raised my hand, then lowered it again.

It was because I heard my name.

“…You danced the opening dance with Sophia that night. Weren’t you afraid Monica would get jealous?” someone asked.

Edward’s voice carried a hint of amusement, completely unconcerned.

“With that temper of Monica, she needs to be taught a lesson once in a while.”

“She’s way too controlling and overbearing. She doesn’t give me any freedom at all.”

“What’s the big deal with me dancing with someone else? ”

Someone followed up with a question.

“But what if Monica really gets angry? Aren’t you afraid she’ll break up with you?”

Edward laughed again.

“I’ve grown up with Monica for more than ten years. I know what kind of person she is better than anyone.”

“Don’t worry. She’ll just throw a little tantrum. She’ll be fine in a few days.”

“Just like last time, when I insisted on going to the movies with Sophia.”

After a pause, he added, his tone even lighter,

“Even if the sky came crashing down, there’s no way she’d ever break up with me.”

“Of that, I can be one hundred percent certain.”

I stood outside the door.

There was no pain.

No anger.

I just felt exhausted.

He was right.

I had argued with him. I had thrown tantrums.

But I had never once asked to break up.

Every time he crossed the line, every time he treated my boundaries like something he could keep stretching, every time he said, “You won’t really be mad at me, right?”

I always forgive.

Not because I didn’t have a temper.

But because I loved him.

But now I understood.

In his eyes, my patience meant my boundaries could be pushed back indefinitely.

He had taken all the kindness I gave him as proof that I couldn’t live without him.

I was about to turn around and leave.

Then someone tapped me on the shoulder from behind.

“Monica, why aren’t you going inside?”

Sophia looked at me with a bright smile.

Before I could answer, she had already reached out and pushed the door open.

Everyone inside the private room turned toward the entrance.

Edward was sitting directly opposite the door, with an empty seat beside him.

When he saw me, he froze for a moment.

Then his expression quickly returned to normal, and he even smiled at me.

Ron was the first to react.

He stood up and waved at me.

“Monica’s here? Come in, come in. We’ve been waiting for you.”

Sophia half-pushed, half-guided me into the private room.

Ron took my arm and led me toward the empty seat beside Edward.

I didn’t sit down.

“I’ll just stand for a while.”

Ron wouldn’t take no for an answer and forcibly pressed me down into the chair.

Edward looked up at me and said softly,

“You’re here?”

His tone was completely natural, as if nothing had ever happened.

The tie clip I gave was back on his tie.

The blue gemstone matched the color of his eyes.

But right beside the tie clip was a faint indentation.

It was left behind by Sophia’s tie clip.

I said nothing and lowered my head to eat.

The table was lively.

Edward was chatting with Sophia, and their laughter drifted over from time to time.

I didn’t look at them.

I didn’t say anything either.

“You don’t love me anymore?” he asked.I thought for a moment before saying, “Edward, do you remember the Full Moon Festival? You asked me if you could dance the opening dance with Sophia. I didn’t argue or make a scene. I simply stepped aside. You were surprised because you thought I would react the way I always had—get angry, and then forgive you after you coaxed me with a few words.”His lips moved, but he said nothing.“You always said I was jealous over nothing, that I had a terrible temper, that I was domineering and unreasonable. You said I couldn’t live without you, and that even if the sky fell, I would never be the one to ask for a breakup.” I looked into his eyes. “You were right. The old me really couldn’t live without you. I had known you since I was three. You were in every memory I had. I thought that was love, but it was actually just a habit.”“Monica…”“You don’t regret losing me,” I said softly. “You regret losing someone who would always wait for you, always forgive

  • He Thought I’d Never Leave, Until I Became the Northern Pack’s Herbalist Wolf   Chapter 10

Edward found the Northern Pack in the spring, a year later.Spring came late in the North. The snow had not completely melted yet, and the wind carried a damp chill. That day, I was turning the soil in the herb garden with my apprentices when I heard a commotion at the entrance. A werewolf called out, “herbalist Wolf Monica, someone is here to see you!”I straightened up and brushed the dirt from my hands. Then I saw Edward. He stood in the snow, wearing a trench coat that was clearly too thin for the weather. His face was pale from the cold, and his lips were cracked. He had lost a lot of weight, and his eyes were terribly red, as if he had not slept well in a long time. The Edward who had once been so full of confidence at the Full Moon Festival now looked like a lost traveler. When he saw me, he stopped for a moment before hurrying toward me.“Monica.”His voice was so hoarse that it was almost unrecognizable.I stood where I was without moving. When he reached me, he tried to pull

She paused, her voice becoming even quieter.“I thought you had feelings for me…”Edward looked at her and suddenly felt irritated. His mind was filled with Monica.Monica’s hand when she handed him his drink. The way Monica lowered her head when she fastened his tie clip for him.And Monica’s back as she walked away without looking back.“Sophia, did you misunderstand something?”“I asked you to have meals with me because the assistance program required me to fill out feedback forms.”“I took walks with you because the pack requires those providing assistance to communicate with their assigned recipients regularly.”He spoke each word slowly.“As for shopping and going to the movies, that’s because Monica wasn’t around and I was bored.”Sophia’s face went completely white.“What did you think there was between us?”Edward continued, his tone growing increasingly impatient.“You know what your family situation is, and you know what mine is. Don’t you?”“The tie clip I casually replaced

Edward wanted to say no, but his throat felt as though something was blocking it, and no words would come out.His phone was still in his hand. The screen lit up, then went dark. Then lit up again, then went dark.Yet there was still no message from her.“Go ahead and call her.”Edward’s mother took out her phone, found Monica’s number, and dialed.Monica answered.“Please wish Edward a happy birthday for me.”“And tell him…”“This is the last time.”The call ended.Edward’s mother was still holding the phone to her ear, frozen in place.“Mom, what did Monica say?”Seeing his mother’s expression, Edward suddenly had a bad feeling. His mother turned to him, her lips moving slightly.“Monica said… happy birthday.”“She also said this is the last time.”The last time.He stood frozen in place, his mind buzzing. What did she mean by “the last time”?“Impossible!”“Mom, you must have heard her wrong. Call her again!”Edward’s mother looked at him as if she wanted to say something. In the en

Edward took a selfie and posted another update. That afternoon, he posted another one.It was a photo from his birthday the year before.Monica was in the photo too, standing beside him with a cake in her hands, her eyes curved into a bright smile. Some people commented, “Such a nostalgic photo.”Others said, “Monica is in it too!”Edward didn’t reply. He just wanted Monica to see it.But by evening, Monica’s profile picture remained quietly in his contact list, without a single red notification dot.Edward kept turning his phone over and over in his hands. Finally, he tossed it onto the sofa and leaned heavily back into the cushions.A wave of irritation surged through him.But his pride wouldn’t allow him to lower his head first. He had already given in.He had posted two updates. His meaning couldn’t have been any clearer. If Monica was smart, she should know what to do.If she couldn’t even understand that, then she was doing it deliberately.Edward let out a cold snort. It was fin

Edward sat in the private room, his fingers unconsciously tapping twice against the tabletop. When Monica left, she hadn’t even looked back.He stared at the closed door for several seconds, and a fleeting sense of unease crossed his heart.“Is Monica okay?” Ron came over and asked.Edward withdrew his gaze and picked up the glass of juice on the table, taking a sip.“She’s fine. She’s always like that.”“Aren’t you going to check on her?”“What’s there to check on?”Edward put down his glass, a look of disdain crossing his face.“She’s not a little kid anymore. If she wants to leave, let her.”His tone was casual, as if he were talking about something completely insignificant.Or perhaps he was saying it to convince himself.Ron opened his mouth, but said nothing more. The private room soon became lively again, with waves of laughter rising one after another.Edward laughed along, chatting with the people beside him and occasionally exchanging a glance with Sophia. But he still felt u
