Chapter 5

Author: richer
Halfway through the meal, someone brought up their plans for the future.

“What are you all planning to do?”

Ron asked while cutting the cake.

“As for me, I’ll take over my family’s store.”

Ron turned to Edward.

“What about you, Edward?”

Edward was scooping strawberries from the top of his cake with a small spoon.

He didn’t even look up.

“Of course I’m going to become a werewolf warrior.”

After saying that, he naturally glanced in my direction.

“Monica and I already agreed. We’ll become warriors together. How glorious would that be?”

His tone was casual, as if he were talking about something that was only natural.

No one found it strange.

Most of the people sitting at the table knew about our relationship.

Ron then turned toward the person sitting diagonally across from him.

“Sophia, what about you?”

Sophia was holding a glass of water.

When she heard the question, she set down the glass and smiled faintly.

“I’m planning to become a warrior too.”

The private room fell silent for a moment.

The spoon in Edward’s hand stopped in midair.

The strawberry rolled off the edge of the spoon and landed on the cake plate.

He stared at Sophia, his eyes filled with surprise.

“Sophia, you want to become a warrior too?”

“Mm.” Sophia nodded, her smile unchanged. “Werewolf warriors can protect the pack and help everyone. Becoming a warrior has always been my dream.”

She said it so naturally, as if she were talking about something that had nothing to do with her.

But the expressions of everyone else at the table had already become interesting.

Some lowered their heads to look at their phones.

Some pretended to pick up food.

Others secretly glanced at me, then at Edward.

I didn’t look up.

I simply continued eating.

After the meal, Ron suggested going out for drinks, but I declined.

Edward remained in his seat and gave me a long, deep look.

He didn’t try to stop me.

When I returned home, my parents were watching television in the living room.

I sat down on the sofa and said calmly,

“Dad, Mom, I’ve already received an offer from the Northern Pack.”

“I don’t want Edward to know about it.”

The living room fell silent for several seconds.

“And I want to go to the Northern Pack as soon as possible. I’ll leave next Monday.”

These past few days, whenever I came home, I locked myself in my room.

I barely looked at my phone, and I hardly spoke during meals.

I had never contacted Edward either.

They had seen all of it.

They should have guessed something.

My mom asked quietly,

“Monica, is there something going on between you and Edward…?”

“There’s nothing between us,” I replied. “I just want to become an herbalist more.”

I was about to say something else, but Dad raised his hand and stopped me.

“Monica. As long as you’ve thought it through, that’s enough. We respect your decision.”

My mom’s eyes reddened, and she didn’t ask anything else.

A few days later,

I dragged my suitcase to the airport, checked in, and joined the line at the boarding gate.

My phone rang.

It was Edward’s mother.

“Monica, do you remember what day it is today?”

She spoke with a smile on the other end of the phone.

Of course I knew.

I remembered this date better than anyone.

I often started preparing his birthday gift several months in advance.

“Please wish Edward a happy birthday for me.”

“And one more thing.”

I paused.

“Tell him this is the last time.”

There was silence on the other end.

I didn’t wait for her to say anything.

I turned off my phone.

I picked up my luggage and walked forward without hesitation.

“You don’t love me anymore?” he asked.I thought for a moment before saying, “Edward, do you remember the Full Moon Festival? You asked me if you could dance the opening dance with Sophia. I didn’t argue or make a scene. I simply stepped aside. You were surprised because you thought I would react the way I always had—get angry, and then forgive you after you coaxed me with a few words.”His lips moved, but he said nothing.“You always said I was jealous over nothing, that I had a terrible temper, that I was domineering and unreasonable. You said I couldn’t live without you, and that even if the sky fell, I would never be the one to ask for a breakup.” I looked into his eyes. “You were right. The old me really couldn’t live without you. I had known you since I was three. You were in every memory I had. I thought that was love, but it was actually just a habit.”“Monica…”“You don’t regret losing me,” I said softly. “You regret losing someone who would always wait for you, always forgive

Edward found the Northern Pack in the spring, a year later.Spring came late in the North. The snow had not completely melted yet, and the wind carried a damp chill. That day, I was turning the soil in the herb garden with my apprentices when I heard a commotion at the entrance. A werewolf called out, “herbalist Wolf Monica, someone is here to see you!”I straightened up and brushed the dirt from my hands. Then I saw Edward. He stood in the snow, wearing a trench coat that was clearly too thin for the weather. His face was pale from the cold, and his lips were cracked. He had lost a lot of weight, and his eyes were terribly red, as if he had not slept well in a long time. The Edward who had once been so full of confidence at the Full Moon Festival now looked like a lost traveler. When he saw me, he stopped for a moment before hurrying toward me.“Monica.”His voice was so hoarse that it was almost unrecognizable.I stood where I was without moving. When he reached me, he tried to pull

She paused, her voice becoming even quieter.“I thought you had feelings for me…”Edward looked at her and suddenly felt irritated. His mind was filled with Monica.Monica’s hand when she handed him his drink. The way Monica lowered her head when she fastened his tie clip for him.And Monica’s back as she walked away without looking back.“Sophia, did you misunderstand something?”“I asked you to have meals with me because the assistance program required me to fill out feedback forms.”“I took walks with you because the pack requires those providing assistance to communicate with their assigned recipients regularly.”He spoke each word slowly.“As for shopping and going to the movies, that’s because Monica wasn’t around and I was bored.”Sophia’s face went completely white.“What did you think there was between us?”Edward continued, his tone growing increasingly impatient.“You know what your family situation is, and you know what mine is. Don’t you?”“The tie clip I casually replaced

Edward wanted to say no, but his throat felt as though something was blocking it, and no words would come out.His phone was still in his hand. The screen lit up, then went dark. Then lit up again, then went dark.Yet there was still no message from her.“Go ahead and call her.”Edward’s mother took out her phone, found Monica’s number, and dialed.Monica answered.“Please wish Edward a happy birthday for me.”“And tell him…”“This is the last time.”The call ended.Edward’s mother was still holding the phone to her ear, frozen in place.“Mom, what did Monica say?”Seeing his mother’s expression, Edward suddenly had a bad feeling. His mother turned to him, her lips moving slightly.“Monica said… happy birthday.”“She also said this is the last time.”The last time.He stood frozen in place, his mind buzzing. What did she mean by “the last time”?“Impossible!”“Mom, you must have heard her wrong. Call her again!”Edward’s mother looked at him as if she wanted to say something. In the en

Edward took a selfie and posted another update. That afternoon, he posted another one.It was a photo from his birthday the year before.Monica was in the photo too, standing beside him with a cake in her hands, her eyes curved into a bright smile. Some people commented, “Such a nostalgic photo.”Others said, “Monica is in it too!”Edward didn’t reply. He just wanted Monica to see it.But by evening, Monica’s profile picture remained quietly in his contact list, without a single red notification dot.Edward kept turning his phone over and over in his hands. Finally, he tossed it onto the sofa and leaned heavily back into the cushions.A wave of irritation surged through him.But his pride wouldn’t allow him to lower his head first. He had already given in.He had posted two updates. His meaning couldn’t have been any clearer. If Monica was smart, she should know what to do.If she couldn’t even understand that, then she was doing it deliberately.Edward let out a cold snort. It was fin

Edward sat in the private room, his fingers unconsciously tapping twice against the tabletop. When Monica left, she hadn’t even looked back.He stared at the closed door for several seconds, and a fleeting sense of unease crossed his heart.“Is Monica okay?” Ron came over and asked.Edward withdrew his gaze and picked up the glass of juice on the table, taking a sip.“She’s fine. She’s always like that.”“Aren’t you going to check on her?”“What’s there to check on?”Edward put down his glass, a look of disdain crossing his face.“She’s not a little kid anymore. If she wants to leave, let her.”His tone was casual, as if he were talking about something completely insignificant.Or perhaps he was saying it to convince himself.Ron opened his mouth, but said nothing more. The private room soon became lively again, with waves of laughter rising one after another.Edward laughed along, chatting with the people beside him and occasionally exchanging a glance with Sophia. But he still felt u
