Chapter 3

Evan immediately spotted the half-burned necklace in the fireplace.

"Isn't that the necklace I gave you...?"

"I don't like it anymore, so I burned it," I interrupted, my voice flat.

He smiled and crouched down beside me. "All right. If you don't like it, there's no reason to keep it. Besides, I've got a new surprise for you tomorrow."

Then, with a hint of apology in his voice, he added, "I've been so busy with border patrol lately that I've neglected you. That's my fault. I promise I'll make it up to you at the celebration the day after tomorrow."

Make it up to me? It didn't matter anymore.

Our mate bond was coming to an end anyway.

"Okay," I said. "I've prepared a surprise for you, too."

His eyes immediately lit up. "What is it? I can't wait!"

"Neither can I."

I couldn't wait to leave the pack for good, and I couldn't wait for the moment he laid eyes on our mate-bond severance agreement.

"I'm not feeling very well today, so I'm going to rest in the guest room."

Without waiting for his reaction, I turned and went to the guest room, locking the door behind me.

Early the next morning, he came knocking on my door.

He told me something urgent had come up within the pack and insisted that I accompany him.

Since our mate-bond severance agreement hadn't been officially approved yet, I was still his mate in name, so I had little choice but to go with him.

It wasn't until we arrived that I realized he'd brought me to a high-end jewelry boutique in the heart of the city's shopping district.

He stayed close to me the entire way, showering me with attention and trying to please me at every turn.

But all I felt was disgust.

I turned to leave, but he grabbed my arm and stopped me.

As soon as we entered, a sales associate hurried over to greet us.

She recognized Evan immediately and welcomed us with a bright smile, declaring that we were the best-matched couple in the entire pack.

She then escorted us to the exclusive VIP section on the top floor.

Displayed on a stand was the store's most expensive piece of jewelry: a magnificent diamond necklace.

The necklace shimmered brilliantly under the lights, its dazzling sparkle making it almost impossible to look away.

"The necklace is set with exactly nine hundred and ninety-nine diamonds, symbolizing a one-of-a-kind love that lasts a lifetime," the sales associate explained. "It's the only one of its kind in the entire city. Quite a few customers have asked about it, but Mr. Evan reserved it for you well in advance."

Evan immediately took out his black card and handed it over.

"All right, put it on my card and have it gift-wrapped, please."

The sales associate accepted the card with a practiced smile and looked at me with undisguised envy.

"Mr. Evan has put so much thought into this. You're a very lucky woman."

Evan's voice was full of affection. "A necklace is nothing. If Sophia wanted the moon, I'd find a way to bring it down from the sky for her."

Just then, the automatic door to the VIP section slid open with a soft chime.

Harriet walked in, accompanied by another sales associate.

The instant Evan saw her, his gaze drifted toward her before he could stop himself.

So it had always been this obvious.

I had simply been blinded by the affection he had pretended to give me.

Looking back, the signs had been there all along.

At every pack dinner, Evan's eyes would inevitably find their way to Harriet, lingering on her without him even realizing it.

There had also been that time when Harriet was home alone and he'd seemed far too concerned about her.

And whenever he prepared something for me, he always made a point of getting an extra one to send to Harriet.

Back then, I'd even admired him for being so thoughtful and caring toward his family.

Now I understood that I'd been nothing more than a convenient cover for him to openly shower Harriet with attention, the perfect excuse to conceal his true feelings.

While I was lost in thought, Harriet had already approached us.

The moment she saw the necklace on display, her eyes lit up.

"It's beautiful... Evan, could I try it on?"

Evan instinctively took half a step forward, moving to block her.

"I'm sorry. This one is for Sophia."

Oliver smiled triumphantly, convinced that I'd chosen him.He opened his arms, ready to pull me into an embrace."Sophia! I knew it! We've known each other since we were children. There's no way your feelings for me could have just disappeared."Before he could finish speaking, I'd already walked past him, taking the roses and chocolates from his hands as I went.Right in front of him, I hurled them into a nearby trash can."Old, spoiled garbage belongs exactly where it is."The smile on Oliver's face froze instantly.Seeing this, Evan wasted no time rubbing salt into his brother's wounds."I know Sophia better than anyone. She can't stand being betrayed, so why would she ever want someone else's castoff? Sophia, you threw away his gifts. Does that mean I'm the one you've loved all along?"As he spoke, he eagerly pressed the old box of werewolf-specific medicine into my hand.I gave him a polite smile and accepted it.Evan was so delighted that he nearly jumped for joy. What was Oliver doing here, too? Hadn't I had enough trouble for one day? First Evan, and now Oliver. What business do you have with Sophia?!"At the mention of Harriet, a flicker of embarrassment crossed Oliver's face. But the next moment, he was quick to distance himself from her."I've already applied for a forced severance of our mate bond. Harriet and I have nothing to do with each other anymore. As far as I'm concerned, she's nobody important.""Well, aren't you heartless?" Evan

The man standing before me had a face covered in stubble, his clothes were disheveled, and there was nothing remotely dignified about his appearance. He was almost unrecognizable compared to the impeccably dressed, elegant man I remembered.Evan had always been so particular about his appearance. His clothes had never had a wrinkle out of place, and he'd never missed a single season's latest fashions.I stared at the disheveled man for a long time before I could finally reconcile him with the Evan I once knew. The moment he saw me, Evan began trembling violently with emotion.Tears even spilled down his cheeks as he cried, "Sophia, it really is you! You're not dead! You're alive! I knew it was you in that photograph!"He opened his arms and eagerly stepped forward to embrace me.I took two steps back in disgust, quickly making up my mind.To keep him from pestering me, I decided to pretend I didn't recognize him."I'm sorry, sir, but you've mistaken me for someone else."Naturally, Eva

Ever since starting my new life, I'd felt a sense of fulfillment every single day.I'd joined the most prestigious and highly classified genetics laboratory in the werewolf world, where I worked on cutting-edge research that most people would never have the opportunity to encounter in their entire lives. The truth was, I'd always possessed extraordinary talent in this field. The laboratory had offered me a position with a generous salary several times before, but I'd turned them down every time.Back then, I'd foolishly waited for my childhood friend Oliver, hoping that one day he'd finally accept my confession.I'd been willing to lower myself for him, asking for nothing more than a sincere response.Later, I'd fallen for Evan's sweet lies, believing I'd finally found true love, so naturally, I'd been reluctant to leave. But in the end, it had all been nothing more than self-deception.Now, I lived for myself and no one else.Although research could be tedious, I'd never felt more ful

Harriet froze for a moment, apparently not expecting Evan to turn her down. She quickly gave an awkward laugh. "Look at you getting all worked up! I was only joking. It's not like I'd actually fight Sophia over a piece of jewelry."She gave me a pointed look before turning back to Evan."You and Oliver really are alike. You both love spoiling your mates."With that, she turned on her heels and walked into the adjoining display area.Even after she'd left, Evan's gaze lingered in her direction, and a look of unmistakable disappointment flashed across his eyes.It wasn't until he noticed me watching him that he quickly composed himself and spoke to me gently."Sophia, why don't you have some champagne while I go over the necklace's details with the sales associate?"But more than ten minutes later, he emerged from the back room empty-handed.Before I could say anything, he let out a sigh, his face filled with guilt."The sales associate was careless while wrapping the necklace and damage
