Chapter 2

Author: Elowen
The corridor behind me fell into complete silence.

“What?”

Antonio’s voice suddenly dropped several degrees.

“I said the wedding is canceled.” I turned around and repeated the words clearly, one by one.

“Antonio De Luca, this is where we end.”

His face turned deathly pale in an instant. A hoarse sound escaped his throat.

“Zoya, after all these years together, how can you call off our engagement so easily?”

“Have you forgotten how we made it this far, step by step?”

How could I forget?

Every transaction in the contract account was proof that we had survived together.

During our first year, he had only one revolver and three streets under his control. He drank with the district boss until he bled from the stomach, trading his health for information that helped him hold on to his territory.

He spent ten thousand euros on his hospital treatment and used the remaining twenty thousand to buy me a bulletproof vest.

In our third year, the old godfather had tried to marry me off to the enemy of the Milanese De Luca family.

Antonio had stormed into the enemy’s estate alone. With a gun pressed to his forehead, he knelt in the rain and let his blood stain the cracks between the stones.

“I will only ever acknowledge Zoya as my woman.”

“If I ever let her suffer the slightest hardship, I will accept the family’s most brutal punishment.”

In our seventh year, Antonio became the underboss. I had helped him purge traitors and consolidate his territory.

At last, we had saved 9.99 million euros.

Soon, we would be able to hold a real wedding.

But ever since Isabella had joined the family, that number had begun to quietly shrink.

“Custom-made handbag: fifty-eight thousand euros.”

“Opera box: twenty-four thousand euros.”

“Bulgari bracelet: ninety-six thousand euros.”

Antonio’s expression darkened.

“They were all part of the family’s social obligations.”

“Social obligations?” I gave a short laugh. “Then what am I to you?”

“Last month, I told you I wanted to see the sea in Naples. Did you go with me?”

“Is she really your consultant—or is she your mistress kept by the family?”

“That’s enough!”

Antonio suddenly shouted.

“Why have you become just like your mother? Why do you start suspecting everyone at the slightest sign of trouble?”

“Do you have to drive everyone around you away before you’ll be satisfied?”

I stared at the man before me in disbelief.

“What did you say?”

When I was young, my father had kept a mistress outside the family. My mother had lived in constant pain and suspicion, while everyone in their social circle mocked and condemned her.

And now Antonio had thrown my father’s exact words back at me.

For a moment, he seemed to come to his senses. Shock and remorse flashed through his eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

He brushed the tears from the corner of my eye with his thumb.

That hand had held a gun and been stained with blood. It had once shielded me from bullets.

Now it moved awkwardly and carefully across my cheek.

I struck him in the chest with my fist.

He grunted, but said nothing as a large red bruise spread beneath his shirt.

Once my emotions had subsided a little, he pulled me tightly into his arms and coaxed me in a low voice.

“Have you forgotten that you’ve always wanted a house with a view of the sea? A new plot of land was just approved south of the harbor. Let’s go see it tomorrow.”

I had always been obsessed with the sea.

He had never forgotten that.

At that moment, I decided to give him one last chance.

The next day, Antonio truly canceled all his gang meetings and underground deals. He personally drove me to the seaside estate sales office.

He chose a three-hundred-square-meter stone villa. It faced south and had a full-length glass balcony, allowing the sunlight to flood the living room.

I stood in the empty living room, secretly hoping the warm sunlight would dispel the gloom that had weighed on my heart for so long.

Just then, my encrypted terminal displayed a new payment notification.

“At 3:08 p.m., five million euros were withdrawn from your linked contract account.”

He had actually paid the enormous sum.

But that evening,

Isabella Rossi posted a new update.

In the video, she held up a brand-new set of keys and leaned against the railing of a south-facing terrace.

The familiar garden and identical sea view appeared behind her.

Her caption read:

“Thank you, Mr. De Luca. In this city filled with gunfire and lies, I finally have a place where I can sleep peacefully!”

After that day, Antonio never came back.My life finally returned to peace. The business at my consultancy flourished.I even hired two assistants and established myself in the seaside city.A year later, my security-system design won a highly prestigious award in the industry. At the award ceremony, I stood beneath the spotlight in an elegant gown, confident and composed.I thanked my family, my team, and my clients. At the end, I said:“I would also like to thank a failed relationship. It taught me that a woman’s worth has never been defined by a man. Only when you become strong enough to stand on your own can you truly take control of your life.”The audience erupted in applause. After the ceremony, I was removing my makeup backstage when the project manager walked in.Over the past year, we had become close friends.“Zoya, congratulations.” He handed me a glass of champagne. “You truly deserve this.”“Thank you.”“By the way,” he said, as though he had just remembered something, “I

Antonio’s hand dropped helplessly to his side.“No…that’s not true, Zoya. Listen to me—”“There’s no need.” I cut him off. “The project manager is waiting for me.”With that, I turned and walked into the conference room without looking back.Even through the frosted glass, I could feel his gaze fixed on my back. The meeting went smoothly. The project manager personally escorted me downstairs and praised me sincerely.“You’re young, Ms. Zoya, but your abilities are exceptional. You truly deserve this opportunity.”“You’re too kind.”He hesitated before speaking again.“Mr. De Luca…is still waiting downstairs.”I followed his gaze.Antonio’s car was parked not far away. He had not gotten out. He was simply sitting quietly in the driver’s seat.I looked away.“His affairs have nothing to do with me.”I returned to the office and immersed myself in work once again.Antonio did not come to bother me again directly.Instead, he began to infiltrate my life in other ways.On the second day, th

Several days later, I heard the news from a former subordinate I knew.【Zoya, you have no idea! Not long after you left, Isabella claimed that she was pregnant with Mr. De Luca’s child!】【Mr. De Luca was completely confused at the time and almost believed her lie. Then, one day, he suddenly came to his senses. He forcibly took her to the hospital for an examination.】【The results showed that she wasn’t pregnant at all! The pregnancy report had been forged. She had fabricated it to deceive Mr. De Luca and rise to power!】【Mr. De Luca went completely insane. He slapped her and ordered security to throw her out. The family is now suing her for commercial fraud and leaking confidential information. She’ll probably have to pay a huge sum and may even go to prison!】I stared at the messages on my phone. There was no expression on my face.I had known this day would come.Isabella’s fate had been sealed the moment she took her first wrong step.None of it had anything to do with me anymore.I

The date printed on the report was exactly the same day they had scheduled their church rehearsal. She had gone there full of joy, intending to tell him the good news herself. All of it had been real. They truly had a child who belonged to both of them.A child he had personally pushed toward destruction, step by step.Antonio gripped the thin report tightly. Its sharp edge cut into his palm, and blood slowly seeped between his fingers. He felt no pain. All he could feel was a vast hole torn open in his chest, with a freezing wind howling endlessly through it.Like a lost soul with nowhere to go, a muffled, despairing sob rose from the depths of his throat. The plane landed in Sicily’s capital. The humid sea breeze, heavy with warmth, swept over me.The sea and sky met in a vast expanse of cold, muted blue-gray.I touched my flat stomach. A living, warm little soul had once grown there.“Baby, it was Mommy’s fault.”The sea wind wildly tangled my hair, while the salt of my tears stung

I only wanted to get away from that disgusting place as quickly as possible.I had barely taken two steps when Isabella chased after me.“Mrs. De Luca, wait! Please let me explain—”Her strength was far greater than I expected. Her nails dug deeply into the flesh of my arm, causing a sharp, stabbing pain.“Don’t touch me.”I shook her off coldly. But then her body suddenly swayed, as though she had lost her balance, and she lunged straight at me.The staircase was directly behind me.My body went over the edge, and I tumbled down the stairs.A tearing pain exploded in my lower abdomen and spread through every part of my body.Warm liquid gushed from beneath me.I curled up on the floor and saw everyone’s faces turn pale.Isabella fell to the ground beside me.“I…I only wanted to explain things to Mrs. De Luca. I didn’t touch her at all…”Antonio hurried over. The moment he saw the blood, his face turned deathly white.“Zoya!”He tried to pick me up, but I pushed him away with all the s

I stared at the woman in the photo in disbelief, my entire body trembling. The next second, Isabella sent me a private message through the encrypted system.【Mrs. De Luca, thank you for choosing this house for me. I’ve never lived in such a bright and spacious villa before!】【I’ll work even harder for the family and repay both of you!】I immediately called Antonio. He explained earnestly:“I only paid the down payment. Isabella will have to cover the mortgage herself. She comes from a minor family and came here alone to seek refuge with us. It’s incredibly difficult for her to establish herself in this city when she doesn’t even have a place to live. Besides, she doesn’t believe in marriage. Everything in her future will depend on her alone.”He had said the same thing to me countless times before, and I had once believed him completely. But now, all I felt was overwhelming absurdity.“Antonio, I’m warning you.”My voice was frighteningly calm.“If you don’t reclaim ownership of that v
