Chapter 1

When the red light outside the operating room finally went out, I was standing at the end of the corridor.

Isabella Rossi was wheeled out, her face deathly pale as she clutched Antonio’s hand.

The man bent toward her and whispered something. With his long, slender fingers, he carefully adjusted the shoulder strap that had slipped down her arm. His movements were so gentle they were almost tender.

“Antonio.”

I spoke.

His fingers stiffened, then slowly withdrew.

“What are you doing here?”

He straightened.

“Didn’t I tell you? Isabella has only just come out of danger. There’s no one else from the family here, so I need to stay with her.”

Several guards wearing the De Luca family crest immediately stepped forward, speaking hurriedly.

“Madam, please don’t misunderstand. Mr. De Luca happened to be handling business in this territory, so he was the first person who could get here.”

I stared at their faces as they desperately tried to smooth things over for him.

I had not even said anything, yet they were already rushing to defend him.

On the hospital bed, Isabella bit her colorless lower lip. Her voice was so faint it seemed as though it might break at any moment.

“Miss Zoya, please don’t blame Mr. De Luca. It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have gotten into trouble during your wedding rehearsal.”

“The timing of your accident,” I said with a smile, “was indeed rather unfortunate.”

Isabella’s body stiffened slightly.

The next moment, she lowered her head. Her long lashes drooped as tears rolled down her cheeks.

“I’m sorry. I caused trouble for the family.”

Antonio’s expression darkened.

“Zoya, she’s just escaped death. Don’t make things difficult for an injured woman.”

It was always the same.

Whenever Isabella was present, I became the cruel one.

Six months ago, she had “accidentally” leaked false intelligence, causing me to lose two informants. I had merely reminded her of it during a meeting, yet she had burst into tears in front of Antonio.

Last month, at the family banquet, she had clearly known that she was allergic to strong liquor. Still, she insisted on taking the glass of whiskey meant for Antonio from the port boss.

Everyone at the banquet had seen it. Later, the family elders whispered that I, the future mistress of the De Luca family, was narrow-minded and incapable of showing compassion toward a newcomer.

Whenever Isabella was present, she was always the innocent victim, while I was always the aggressive and unreasonable woman.

Antonio grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the corner of the wall. He leaned close, lowering his voice.

“Our church wedding is next week. I’ve already arranged everything—the guests, the godfather, the family elders. What exactly are you in such a hurry about?”

I paused. I had originally intended to hand him the pregnancy report in my pocket.

“Antonio, actually, I’m—”

“Mr. De Luca—”

Isabella’s weak voice came from inside the ward.

“My wound hurts terribly. Could it be infected? Could you come and take a look?”

Antonio released me almost without hesitation.

A nurse came out holding a medical order.

“Miss Isabella needs an anti-inflammatory injection. It will cost three thousand two hundred euros.”

Isabella glanced at her phone and bit her lip.

“I don’t have enough money in my account…”

Without saying a word, Antonio took out his black card.

The next second, a payment notification appeared on my personal terminal.

【Three thousand two hundred euros had been deducted from the contract account.】

Three thousand two hundred euros.

The money had been taken from the account Antonio and I had established together—

the account meant to fund our wedding and our future life.

Antonio’s eyes darted away from mine.

“I’ll put the money back when we return to the estate.”

“The deduction just happened because I have too many accounts linked to my watch. I must have touched the wrong one by accident.”

This time, it was an accidental charge.

What about all the times before?

He walked over to me and deliberately softened his voice.

“Don’t be angry. The mistake was mine. I’ll replenish the contract account when we get back.”

“The church wedding will go ahead as planned, all right?”

I stared at him in silence.

In his mind, it seemed that as long as the missing money was replaced, every wound he had inflicted could be erased and everything could return to normal.

I did not answer.

He raised his hand, intending to ruffle my hair as he had done countless times before.

I turned my head away, avoiding him. His palm stopped in midair.

He seemed stunned, but he did not say anything else.

I turned and walked away.

After a few steps, I suddenly stopped.

I gently placed my palm over my still-flat stomach. A tiny life was growing inside me.

After a long silence, I slowly spoke.

“Antonio.”

“Hmm?” he replied.

“The wedding is canceled.”

After that day, Antonio never came back.My life finally returned to peace. The business at my consultancy flourished.I even hired two assistants and established myself in the seaside city.A year later, my security-system design won a highly prestigious award in the industry. At the award ceremony, I stood beneath the spotlight in an elegant gown, confident and composed.I thanked my family, my team, and my clients. At the end, I said:“I would also like to thank a failed relationship. It taught me that a woman’s worth has never been defined by a man. Only when you become strong enough to stand on your own can you truly take control of your life.”The audience erupted in applause. After the ceremony, I was removing my makeup backstage when the project manager walked in.Over the past year, we had become close friends.“Zoya, congratulations.” He handed me a glass of champagne. “You truly deserve this.”“Thank you.”“By the way,” he said, as though he had just remembered something, “I

Antonio’s hand dropped helplessly to his side.“No…that’s not true, Zoya. You truly deserve this opportunity.”“You’re too kind.”He hesitated before speaking again.“Mr. De Luca…is still waiting downstairs.”I followed his gaze.Antonio’s car was parked not far away. He had not gotten out. He was simply sitting quietly in the driver’s seat.I looked away.“His affairs have nothing to do with me.”I returned to the office and immersed myself in work once again.Antonio did not come to bother me again directly.Instead, he began to infiltrate my life in other ways.On the second day, th

Several days later, I heard the news from a former subordinate I knew.【Zoya, you have no idea! Not long after you left, Isabella claimed that she was pregnant with Mr. De Luca’s child!】【Mr. De Luca was completely confused at the time and almost believed her lie. Then, one day, he suddenly came to his senses. He forcibly took her to the hospital for an examination.】【The results showed that she wasn’t pregnant at all! The pregnancy report had been forged. She had fabricated it to deceive Mr. De Luca and rise to power!】【Mr. De Luca went completely insane. He slapped her and ordered security to throw her out. The family is now suing her for commercial fraud and leaking confidential information. She’ll probably have to pay a huge sum and may even go to prison!】I stared at the messages on my phone. There was no expression on my face.I had known this day would come.Isabella’s fate had been sealed the moment she took her first wrong step.None of it had anything to do with me anymore.I

The date printed on the report was exactly the same day they had scheduled their church rehearsal. She had gone there full of joy, intending to tell him the good news herself. All of it had been real. They truly had a child who belonged to both of them.A child he had personally pushed toward destruction, step by step.Antonio gripped the thin report tightly. Its sharp edge cut into his palm, and blood slowly seeped between his fingers. He felt no pain. All he could feel was a vast hole torn open in his chest, with a freezing wind howling endlessly through it.Like a lost soul with nowhere to go, a muffled, despairing sob rose from the depths of his throat. The plane landed in Sicily’s capital. The humid sea breeze, heavy with warmth, swept over me.The sea and sky met in a vast expanse of cold, muted blue-gray.I touched my flat stomach. A living, warm little soul had once grown there.“Baby, it was Mommy’s fault.”The sea wind wildly tangled my hair, while the salt of my tears stung

I only wanted to get away from that disgusting place as quickly as possible.I had barely taken two steps when Isabella chased after me.“Mrs. De Luca, wait! Please let me explain—”Her strength was far greater than I expected. Her nails dug deeply into the flesh of my arm, causing a sharp, stabbing pain.“Don’t touch me.”I shook her off coldly. But then her body suddenly swayed, as though she had lost her balance, and she lunged straight at me.The staircase was directly behind me.My body went over the edge, and I tumbled down the stairs.A tearing pain exploded in my lower abdomen and spread through every part of my body.Warm liquid gushed from beneath me.I curled up on the floor and saw everyone’s faces turn pale.Isabella fell to the ground beside me.“I…I only wanted to explain things to Mrs. De Luca. I didn’t touch her at all…”Antonio hurried over. The moment he saw the blood, his face turned deathly white.“Zoya!”He tried to pick me up, but I pushed him away with all the s

I stared at the woman in the photo in disbelief, my entire body trembling. The next second, Isabella sent me a private message through the encrypted system.【Mrs. De Luca, thank you for choosing this house for me. I’ve never lived in such a bright and spacious villa before!】【I’ll work even harder for the family and repay both of you!】I immediately called Antonio. He explained earnestly:“I only paid the down payment. Isabella will have to cover the mortgage herself. She comes from a minor family and came here alone to seek refuge with us. It’s incredibly difficult for her to establish herself in this city when she doesn’t even have a place to live. Besides, she doesn’t believe in marriage. Everything in her future will depend on her alone.”He had said the same thing to me countless times before, and I had once believed him completely. But now, all I felt was overwhelming absurdity.“Antonio, I’m warning you.”My voice was frighteningly calm.“If you don’t reclaim ownership of that v
